His mother was a member of the Lutheran Church in Niederzehren, Kreis Marienwerder, but the baptism took place in the church at Lessen on 16 Apr 1848. Ferdinand's mother is Caroline Tessmer, an unmarried young woman living in Lessen. The father was unknown. Ferdinand's baptismal sponsors were Frau Wilhelmine Micheli; and the cottage farmer (käthner) Gottfried Kowalski, both from Lessen.
