WILLIAM ROHDE, farmer, section 12, 80 acres, P.O. Cambria. Was born April 4th, 1814, in Cassel, Prussia, Germany, son of Philip and Mary (Hemler) Rohde. In the spring of 1851 he emigrated to America, landing at New York city in June, thence directly to Pittsburgh, Penn., where he remained until the following spring, when he went to Wheeling, Virginia, where he made his home for several years. He is a mason and stone cutter by trade, which he learned in Germany. In the fall of 1854 he went to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa, then to St. Louis, then to New Orleans, where he went to work on Ft. McComb, on Lake Ponchatrain. The following spring he went again to St. Louis, then to St. Paul, Minn., where he remained until 1862, when he enlisted in Co. E, 5 Regt. Minn. Vol. Inft. During the balance of 1862 and the year 1863 his regiment was on the frontier in pursuit of the Indians. In 1864 they were ordered to Helena, Ark. They belonged to the 16th army Corps. He continued with the regiment until the close of the war, and was mustered out and discharged in Sept., 1865, at St. Paul. He then came to the town of Scott, where he now resides. Married in May 1854, to Sophia Schmidt, daughter of Conrad and Elizabeth (Hoebleng) Schmidt, of Galena, Ill., natives of Germany. They have had six children: William, born Nov. 8th, 1856, married Hannah Wendt; lives in Wausau, Wis. George W., born Nov 15, 1858, married Caroline Wendt, lives in Scott. Victoria, born Dec 18, 1861. Edward, born Mar. 23, 1863. August, born Mar. 18, 1869; died Mar. 20, 1883. Anna Sophia, born Oct. 14, 1871. Mr. and Mrs. R. are members of the Albright church, at Kingston. He is a Republican.
