Hello List
I hope someone out there can help me I have been searching for a very long time for the town( or village ) of my grandmother. She was born in 1902 in Schmalleninten or Samuliken. The spelling is different in two different documents. The first one was in her own hand. I have been told by an Aunt it was in East Prussia. Her father Johan Heimmik Dumschat died in some war, she could only remember one thing about him and that was that he had bright red hair. Her mother Gohanna Turau, turror,turan, was sent to Siberia and came back ill and died. Grandma and her brother and sisters were raised in an orphanage. Grandma Johanna Mary Dumschat came to America in 1921 with her brother Albert. She married a Louis Schwager in Con.

Schmalleninten=Schmalleningken

I think the correct place name is Schmalleningken, situated at the Prussia-Lithuvian border. The former Lithuvian name was Smalininkai.

Schmalleningken

Otti is right, but what he (she?) means with former Lithuanian name Smalininkai? I am from Smalininkai, was born there 23 years ago and this is and was present (maybe for past 60 years) name for this little town, you can find it in present day maps. If you would take pictures, documents and postcards from e.g. 1920's, you would find a German name of this town - Schmalleningken. If you need more information, try this http://www.smalininkai.lt/ there you can find some information and contacts. In this town there is one amazing man, who are deep in Schmalleningken history - seek for Justinas Stonys, he has very interesting ancient equipment museum and has lots of to tell. Maybe this would help for someone.
