That certainly looks like Tammerow. I wonder if that could be an initial J. Jammerow -- could it be Jablonowo?

There are also a lot of villages ending in -ow in Mecklenburg, but not a Tammerow or Jammerow. I will look in my records and see if I find anything else.

I can't read the writing below the name either. Do you know what type of information is usually written there? Are there others on the ship from the same area?

Indeed there is a Jakobsdorf in Dramburg.
At the moment I don't have a link to a map, but Kartenmeister will provide some data, including email addresses of other people searching the area:

http://kartenmeister.com/preview/databaseUwe.asp

I have a list of links in my website, but I haven't updated it in ages. But you might find something useful in there.
I am researching the Freiberg family of Granville, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin. US church records indicate that August Freiberg came from Grammlutz, Pommern his wife Johanna Rothschild, came from Gross-Gestien and their oldest son Julius (born just before they immigrated in the 1860s) was born in Althüsten, Pommern.

I have not been able to find these locations in various Germanic gazatteers I have checked.

I finally found a map that shows the location of my ancestor's birth place---Jakobsdorf (or Jacobsdorf), Kr. Saatzig, Pomerania. Jacobsdorf is 8 miles southeast of Jacobshagen and Jacobshagen is 16 miles east of Stargard. Now I'm trying to find the Lutheran Church records for her birth in about 1869. On the LDS site, I found a whole list of church records for Stettin, which is where I think I should be looking. However, I'm stumped as to which film would include Jacobsdorf. Can anyone help me with this? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having a hard time deciphering a birth location on a Hamburg Passenger List record. The surname/father in question is Gottlieb Gess traveling in 1853 to New Orleans. Under his birth location, it appears to show Tabbernow but I cannot find this anywhere. The closet village I can find is Pribbernow northeast of Stettin in Pomerania. Can somebody with more knowledge be able to tell me if this is correct and possibly translate the rest of the record?

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1068&pa...

LDS is making this information available on-line, but they only started a year or two ago, so there isn't much done yet.

This is the starting point for the on-line films:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

If you click the map to see a list of what is available.

Some films have been transcribed and some not, so you can access either the transcription or the images only.

I did a quick search and found nothing on your relative - but you should try yourself.

If there is nothing of interest there, you will have to visit an LDS Family History Centre - after you have determined that there is a film of interest.

There if good information on how to research in the Family Search site itself.
You could start here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/helps/default.asp?topic=Sear...

or here

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/RG/frameset_rg.asp

There I have found a number of records about my family, going back to the late 18th - early 19th century.

Good luck

Carlos
(carlossa52 (at) gmail (dot) com)

Thank you so much for the web address! I had no idea it existed. I had a response from a fellow who told me that he is a professional researcher. He believes that the name on the stone is Radumein and that it's a misspelling of the name Radomin, a small village in East Prussia/District Neidenburg. He also said that the churchbooks for Neidenburg(Birth 1708-1944/Marriage 1705-1945/Death 1704-1944/City and Landcommunity/Radomin belonged to the Landcommunity)are today in a Church archive in Berlin. I don't know if this is correct, but it's a good start I think.

My Great-great-great-great-Grandfather Ultman Jergins is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Huntsville, Walker Co., Texas. We have always been told that he was born in Rodanier, Prussia April, 1789. I have found no records for a town by that name. I recently received a headstone photo from a kind volunteer. It has the name of the town, but I can't read it all. I have attached the photo hoping someone else will recognize it. I sincerely appreciate any help deciphering it!!! Cathey

My Lehmann family came from Cranzin/Kranzin. Out of a family of 6; 4 (mom, dad, a sister & brother) ended up in Brandon, Fond du Lac Co., WI...and the other 2 (brother and married sister) ended up in Elmore, Ottawa Co., OH. I haven't figured out why. They were all on the same ship, arriving April 19, 1883. One of the Lehmann sisters married a Bredlau (in Kranzin), and I thought perhaps they ended up in OH to be near other Bredlau's in the area...but then I learned there were Bredlau's in Fond du Lac also.

The mother Lehmann may have been a Seemann (haven't found more info).

Passenger lists show 2 other Lehmann families from Cranzin/Kranzin, arriving in 1869 and 1872. These families connect to Griese and Kersten. I don't know enough about my family to connect to these families. I do know Griese's were in Fond du Lac also.

Several of my Lehmann names were reused for children and again for descendants: Charles/Carl, Emilie/Emelia/Amelia, Augusta/Augustine, Wilhelm/William/Wilhelmina.

I'd love to find a connection!

Arrived on Rhaetia, April 19 1883
Carl Lehmann b. 12/22/1834 m. Amelia (possibly) Seemann b. 5/22/1832
Children:
Augusta Wilhelmina Lehmann b. 15 Jun 1856 in Kranzin near Arnswalde, Brandenburg, m. Ferdinand Ludwig Bredlau b. 08 Jul 1852 (Lived in Elmore, Ottawa Co., OH)
William Lehmann b. 27 Feb 1861 in Germany (never married, lived in Brandon, Fond du Lac Co., WI)
Charles/Carl F. Lehmann b. 05 Jan 1864 in Kranzin near Arnswalde, Brandenburg (Lived in Elmore, Ottawa Co., OH. Married after settling.)
Amelia C. Lehmann b. 12 Aug 1872 in Germany (Lived in Brandon, Fond du Lac Co., WI. Married and later moved to Janesville, Rock Co., WI).

Hess or Oldenburg families around Beustin or Nelep Pomerania

One of my great great grandmothers, Augusta Hess Bethke Dehnel had a brother Carl Hess (not sure if his first name was really something else like Fredreich Wilhelm or such)that worked for Herr Wilde at the Ev Lutheran church of Nelep. I'm trying to find out more detail about the Hess Family and where they actually lived. We believe that the father was Wilhelm Hess and that Augusta and Carls mother's last name was Oldenburg or a variation of that. However, one death certificate says name was Carolina and one says Henriette. Does anyone have Hess or Oldenburg branches that were from Beustin (not sure where that's at or if it's spelled right) or Nelep, Pomerania? I'm also interested in finding out any other details about anyone connected with the Church at Nelep or specific history details of that church. I think the cemetery was quite demolished during WW but that's about all I know. Augusta immigrated with her family / second husband and children and Carl came to US a couple of times and then died here in early 1900s and Augusta died in 1930. They are both buried in Fairfax, Minnesota St Johns Lutheran cemetery.

I am trying to find more connections and validation of the maiden name of my great great Grandmother Augusta Tuenge (married to August Tuenge). Copy of her newspaper type obituary here in US - Minnesota - Sandstone area in 1923 said she was Miss Augusta Schroeder. However, one death certificate of a daughter says 'mothers maiden name' was Lueck. So trying to find out more about those two families or any possible connections. Augusta and August Tuenge immigrated to U.S. in Nov 1889 settling in Minnesota eventually around New Ulm at West Newton. August died there in 1900 or 1901 (conflicting info). The German ship listing said their last residence in Pomerania was Wussow. If anyone has any Schroeders, Luecks, or Tuenges that could be a connection I'd love to get info about them.

Seems that pretty much all Minzlaffs are from the area around Stettin/Kolberg, Regenwalde being one of the larger towns around there. Sorry I can't be of any more help. My information is based on what my grandparents remembered.

History of Stettin Churches

1. The church registers for mid-1800s St. Nikolai Ev. Church in Stettin say St. Nikolai-Johannes. There was also existing at this time a St. Johannes Roman Catholic Church in Stettin. Were these churches combined at one time?

2. A St. Nikolai baptismal register for 1810-1817 has a note "Pastoren Von St. Jakobi". What was the relationship between St. Jakobi and St. Nikolai evangelical churches or did they just share clergy.

I am researching in the Stettin church books and getting confused because family seem to move continually from church to church. Does anyone have answers or have any advice where I can find more historical info on the churches of Stettin? Thanks.
Veronica
Thank you Philipp. I have a relative from Stettin baptised 1786 at St. Gertrud Ev., married 1817 at St. Jakobi Ev., and then had burial records at St. Johannes RC Church. It seems like the church might have been chosen by convenience rather than a true religious motive.
Veronica

The Stettin church records have been filmed by the LDS. You can rent them and view them at your local family history center. Look at the library catalogue at www.familysearch.org to find the correct film numbers.
Veronica

Dear Raylene,

I am (as I am sure you are too) a direct descendent from Frederick Wilhem Reinhold Brettschneider. He is my greatgrandfather: my grandfather was his son, Otto Herbert (married to Amy McPherson) and my father was Jeffrey Noel Brettschneider. We must be distantly related.

Shirley

You would locate the Family History Center closest to you (or one with the best hours near you) by going to this URL:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

When you get there, one of the volunteers will help you fill out the necessary paperwork to order the microfilms. There is a nominal fee. When the films arrive, you must look at them at that FHC. You'll have a few weeks to look at them, and sometimes you can extend the rental period.

Gail

Have you tried the ShtetlSeeker? It's not Jewish towns.
http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/
I enlarged the photo. I think there is a 'm' in the name, so I searched for 'Rademeir' using their soundex method in 'Eastern Europe'. The results show a Radimer Bohemia and other possibilities.

Gail
