I would like to find out more information about my Grandmother, Ruth Trutna (Barnard) who was born 18 Jan 1920 in Silver Lake, Minn. Her parents were Joseph Trutna and Sophie Shereda. She married William E Barnard in Wahoo, NE in 1944. I would like to find out where the family lived in the US, when they immigrated here, when Ruth moved to Wahoo.

My great grandparents, Joseph and Sophie, are buried in Wahoo, NE, as far as I know. Joseph was born in Minnesota, I believe, and Sophie in South Dakota.

I do not know who their parents were, but another post indicates that the Trutnas might have come from Gersov in southern Moravia.

Ok, a lot younger than I was assuming. My mother was born in 1918 in Nebraska and we will be celebrating her 95th birthday in a couple of weeks. So you must be in my own childrens' generation.

What are your goals? To learn more about your grandmother's family here in the US? After that, to gather data about marriage, births, etc. in Moravia?

I am going to write you offline. Look for a red number up by the envelope in Ancestry.

Mary Levesque

Hi, Beth. Since this topic is getting so long, you might want to start your own thread in this Moravia board.

But I have something for you. Margie Sobotka's book, Nebraska Kansas Czech Settlers, lists Jan Trutna on page 139 Saunders County as coming from Kerstov, Trebic, Jihlava. Small problem: actapublica does not list Kerstov, so it could be a misspelling. If you get your topic out as a single, some of the experts might pick up on this name and figure out what it really is. Jan Trutna is the only Trutna listed in the book, so we might theorize that he was a relative, perhaps brother or cousin, to your Joseph.

Digging a little further, I entered the German name given in one of the early posts, and came up with the Czech spelling Gersov (with a hacel over the s). And that one is in actapublica.

I took a quick look at the index for 1860 to 1897 and did not find any Trutnas. Do you know a date of birth for your grandmother? Was she born here or in Europe? I assume here. Do you have any birthdates for her parents?

Yes, both are in the Czech Republic today, which was once part of Czechoslovakia. One is in Bohemia, the other in Moravia.

These are Catholic records, but Protestant (and Jewish) records are sometimes included. Some of the Protestant churches appear to have had their own books, but it would be the more sizeable congregations. "Evangelical" appears to be the denomination. I'm not familiar with those at all, simply because none of my ancestors after 1750 or so were Protestant. That might be worth a new thread, asking about various denominations. Or maybe someone has answered that in a previous post.

Thank you so much, Mary, for the reply. I have been traveling for a week+, thus away from my computer. So, this makes things a bit more complicated. Do you know, are both Miroslav locations within what later became Czechoslovokia? The Archives that appear in your link appear to be for Catholic records. Am I wrong? I think I need to be looking for Protestant records. Thank you for your input. Maymie

It appears there are two Miroslav locations, one in Moravia, the other in Bohemia. See two attached maps. Miroslav is in the upper left of each.

You've already received links about the Moravian records; the Bohemian records would be found in the Praha (Prague) archives, and are not yet online.
To Jean & Mary: Thanks for input. Some things make sense now. Yes, the family was Protestant & I have not seen any Protestant records either. My sources as follows:
Herman J. Rost(1846-1884) St. John Luth.,Effingham, IL rec. states he was born in Miroslav.
Wilhelmina (Mina)Rost Wissen - son Walter stated in 1930 census (Marion, Indiana) that his mother was born in Czechoslovokia. Herman & Wilhelmina were children of Jacob & Johanna Rost who stated they were born in Hesse, Darmstadt.

Is there another Miroslav? Since Walter stated Czechoslovokia I thought this would be the right place.

I'm always glad to hear your hear the thoughts of others. Maymie

The German genealogy expert, Dr. Roger Minert, gave a workshop here in Omaha, and gave a possible explanation about my German ancestors who were living in Moravia. The country had unfarmed lands and the government recruited protestants who were being discriminated against in their own lands. In my case, it appears to be Anabaptists, who did not believe in infant baptism. My gr gr gr grandmother was apparently one. I have not seen this in print anywhere else, but it makes sense. This was in the 1700s. So it is possible that the Rosst family fit into a cateogy like this.

Jean, can you figure out if I found the correct Misroslav or not? If I did, this index, etc. is fairly complete. If the family was not Catholic, there might be books for the Evangelical Brethren, but usually they show up on the list, even if they are not digitized. I looked at a few pages in this book to see if protestant was ever checked, but did not see any. (I have seen books where protestant was checked, and even a Jewish entry.)

If this is the correct book, and if protestants are listed, then those two children were not born in Miroslav. That's why I was hoping that the entry I found was possibly another Rosst family, but it was not to be. By following back relatives, you sometimes get a clue where the missing ones are.

Thank you for the reply. I have studied this for a while and still find it very hard to understand. Thank you for finding this as I would never have been able to read it. It does confirm the surname being present in Mislitz (German for Miroslav) if I am correct. I do not know of a Katharina in the family. Can you read the names of the parents? Thank you so much again. Maymie

I don't know how helpful this will be. I found a Rosst family in a village near Miroslav -- Vaclavov. I have attached two snips. The first one is the index that says there is a Katharine on page 197. The second shows that page. Readers, it's the top entry. Does that say Rosst? And what about the rest of it?

The two urls are:

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/1890/?strana=15...

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/1874/?strana=3

I don't see anything for 1846 and 1849 in the index or in the book for Miroslav.

Can anyone tell me in what time period was Miroslav known as Misslitz? When did it become known as Miroslav? I am trying to pinpoint what was the name of the place when my ancestors were there.
Also, I have been looking at matriky.archives.cz but have not been able to find anything pertaining to my family. It is a source for north Moravia. Am I looking in the right place if my ancestors lived in Miroslav? Your help in clearing this up is very much appreciated. Maymie

Rost/Rosst Family in Miroslav

I have evidence that some family members were born and lived in Miroslav in the 1840's and later in Prussia: Wilhelmine Rost, b. 1849 & Herman Julius Rost, b. 1846 (brother & sister) & their parents: Jacob & Laura Elnora Johanna Rost. They were probably Protestant. Is there any source of information for birth records during that time period? Any census or other source that could tell me more? Maymie

My great-great grandfather was born in 1874 in Austria, whereabouts unknown. His wife was born in the same year, and her maiden name is Kojetinsky. They had five kids-Frank Jr., Irene, Elias (Eloise, it was spelled wrong,)Josephine, and Emma. Frank was born in Austria, but the other four were born in Mexico. Here is where it gets interesting-they immigrated to the United States through Mexico. Irene, Elias, Josephine, Emma, and a Franz Listek all immigrated together on April 17, 1917. However, I do not know if this is the son or the father, this "Franz". There was another Frank Listek who crossed on Feb 26, 1917. And i also do not know where Bertha is, and have not found any immigration records for her. Any help?

No, I do not think so. The one I am looking for died later. I know they were there in the city because that was were the picture was taken...I do not know the year but it would be pre1917 because that is when the whole family emigrated to the US...are there any marriage records of a frank and Bertha Listek?

I do not find a Frantisek/Frank Listek born in 1867 in Vitkovice. No Listek's born that year.
I did find a Frantisek born of Marie Listek, unmarried woman, daughter of Frantisek Listek and Maria Jarolim, and Josef Gregorczyk on July 20, 1874. Josef Gregorczyk is son of Filipp Gregorczyk, a hornik (miner) and Frantiska Wojcik.
This Frantisek born 1874, died June 17, 1897.
Could he be the Frank you are looking for?
Church records can be found at matricky.archives.cz

Jean
