Hello just reading the board and this is confusing I must stay and I can see why there is a big problem on this name. I also get mix websites on the William the Silent and William Von Brabatine both with the same dates and died in the same place. All I wish is to find a marriage cerificate on one of the other to Dorothea von Hohenlohe. If she did married William the Silent I can't see why it would be a secret since she came from royalty and I guess this is why I had doubts with the marriage to William the Silent all this time. Anyone with any insight please respond thanks debi

I'm glad she did, because I've finally read your response :) You may have already found all the info you need re. our family tree...but I'm here if you have any questions.

Best wishes,
Leigh.

Hi Dianne

I saw your post when I was looking for a relative on this site. Are you a Schoer? I have the full family tree (a paper printout) at home which was compiled by one of the Schoers in New Calendonia. Let me know if you would like to see it and I will try to scan it and email to you.

Do you know how to contact Leigh? BTW - the Schoers are all over Sydney.

Regards
Lyn Schoer

I found this entry in the "Heimatbuch: Nattheim und Oggenhausen":
"Andreas Illenberger aus Kaschau, ehemaliger Hauptstadt in Oberungarn, war römisch-kaiserlicher Oberst in Kaschau; gestorben anno 1587". Andreas Illenberger of Kaschau, formerly capital of Upper Hungary, was Roman Imperial Colonel in Kaschau; he died in the year 1587.
Today Kaschau is Košice in E. Slovakia. Originally a fortress town, it was headquarters of a military district called the Captaincy of Upper Hungary.
My Illenberger Family migrated from Austria to Württemberg, Germany after the 30 Years' War.
I am looking for further information on Andreas Illenberger. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

John Illenberger

On the contrary, it's not rubbish at all. It's likely that far more than 70% of people with European descent are descended from Charlemagne, as they're probably also descended from Muhammad. Mathematics places the probability of the most common human ancestor somewhere between the fourth century and the thirteenth.

It's in the same style that Genghis Khan can EASILY be proven to be an ancestor to 1/10 Asians/Eastern Europeans. The problem is proving it through the lines who have fallen from nobility. An illegitimate child is just as "legitimate" as any other in terms of blood and genetics.

I have traced my family tree back to Zell, Luzern Switzerland as well as Zurich and "Oberdorf, Basel-Country. My line is traced from the 1650 to the 1750's. All of these area are dominated by Germany, in language or culture. It does not appear that Switzerland became a definitive unified nation untill the 1800's. So, am I German, since they contolled the area when my ancestors were there? Am I Swiss, since it is Switzerland today? Do I get to choose? I'm sure we can all agree I'm confused :)
Thanks for you input!

I agree wholeheartedly, I just assumed that the person who posted this thread would want factual evidence. I love tracing my history back to the Roman Emperors and the Kings of Troy, but that does not necessarily make it true, sadly. :(

But, there are links to old English and Welsh kings from the BCE era who are descendants of migrants from places in Europe, who came there after the fall of Troy. That much can be assumed, just not necessarily the Royalty.

Not much is known about the ancestry of Clovis as he was the king of the Salian Franks as Europe was falling into the Dark Ages. Clovis was the first Christian Frankish King though and created a family line which later formed the kingdoms of Austrasia (not to be confused with Austria) and Neustria, which were two kingdoms that often fought. The Kingdom of Burgundy, also a kingdom of Clovian descendants acted as the peacemaker. Later, Austrasia and Neustria, after many transformations became the kingdoms of France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Added information and corrections.

Christian Becker b. abt 1822 came to America and Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1846 according to the obituary of his wife Wilhelmine Foellinger who came from Karlsbrunn, Germany. Christian came from Saarbrucken (or the surrounding area. It appears that they may have know each other prior to coming to America (to be confirmed) as their towns were near each other. Trying to determine if they came on the same ship together.

I cannot confirm the middle names of Christian Becker as previously reported. So, ignore the Fredrich Wilhelm. Christian Becker is such a common name.

Wilhelmine came with her brother John (Johann) Martin Foellinger. It appears she had an other brother (Jacob) that proceeded her in death and travels to America in 1836.

Wilhelmine may have been born Sophie Katharina Wilhelmine Fellinger (Foellinger, Follinger or Fallinger).
No, sorry, I don't have them in my database, and I haven't found them on geneanet.org or gedbas.genealogy.net either.

Becker is one of the most common surnames in Saarland, so it could be tough finding the right one...

I also googled Wilhelmina/Wilhelmine Foellinger/Föllinger/Fellinger/Voellinger/Völlinger/Vellinger, and all I found was this:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/individual_record...
Johanna Friederica Wilhelmina Fellinger, born in Aachen 04/21/1823, daughter of Johann Jacob Fellinger and Anna Christina Wildenstein

And this:
http://gedbas.genealogy.net/datenblatt.jsp?nr=1016286709
Johanna Friederika Wilhelmine Fellinger, born in Aachen, married Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Richard Trostorff of Vaals on 05/30/1849

That's probably not your Wilhelmina. Though the dates are similar, and Aachen was in the Rhine Province of Prussia, too.

Becker is one of the most common surnames in Saarland, so that could be tough...

I have a Jakob Becker in my tree. He was born some time before 1660 in Ensdorf (not far from Schwarzenholz) and died on 15/01/1734 in Ensdorf. His parents were Kurt Becker (ca. 1620-1666) and Entgen Rupp (ca. 1620-1685).

By the way: Kölln, Etzenhofen and Sellerbach are all parts of Köllerbach, which is now a part of Püttlingen, Regionalverband Saarbrücken (formerly Landkreis Saarbrücken).

Yes the Mlaska name is also slovak.

The "Mlaska" family as far as I can tell came from Brno Czechoslovakia and the actual surname was Mlaskac for males and Mlaskacova for females and once in the US the name was spelled several different ways from Mlaskak, Mlaska and Mlaskoch.

I have a feeling that during the wars someone with the surname of Mlaska ended up in Croatia and that is how the Bay/Island got it's name.

Still trying to find out more about the history of Mlaska Bay-Hvar Island and how it got its name.

January 30, 2010

Dear Judy,

I am interested in learning more about my Gersbach family ancestry.

My immediate family currently lives in Virginia and South Carolina; although, most of my extended Gersbach family, my father's family, including uncles, aunts and cousins, currently live or lived in western New York State.

Interesting enough, I had the opportunity to work in Germany for approximately one month last year (2009), in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate). Before returning to the US, I visited Gersbach, Germany, in the Black Forest, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. This town was established in 1166 and the name was originally spelled "Gerispac", as per the historical summary posted in the town Wellkommen center. The center also notes that Gersbach is the center of Germany's largest natural area. I was very surprised to learn that none of the 609 residents in the town of Gersbach during my visit had the last name Gersbach. I was told by the town historian that all of the Gersbach's in the town of Gersbach moved to Switzerland and the US (mid-west) in search of work between 1700 and 1800. The current population is engaged in dairy farming, cheese-making, government and perhaps run the natural area and/or commute to nearby towns and Switzerland to work.

I know my great granfather moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania and worked for the railroad. He eventually became the station master. I was surprised also to learn that the town of Gersbach was Protestant from the beginning, and, resisted numerous attempts by the Austrian's to acquire and convert the town to Catholicism. Other European countries (Switzerland, France, etc.) also attempted to acquire Gersbach without success. Hence, when you travel to gersbach, you will learn that the town reportedly built several hundreds of palisade forts to fend off/intimidate its many potential invaders.

My miscellaneous Google searches revealed that there is also a Gersbach, Austria. Another interesting bit of information came from my mother, years ago, indicating that my father's parents had a Menorah, which presumably had been passed down through the Gersbach family (Is there Jewish ancestry in the Gersbach family?) This is rather odd, since my father's parents and his grandparents were all Catholic. Another item. A friend determined that the meaning of "Gersbach" is gristmill ("Gers") by a brook ("bach"), which, if correct, seems to be similar to the name "Miller" in the US. One additional item. The inn in which I stayed in Gersbach, Germany (Landhotel MÜHLE zu Gersbach) provided me a softcover centennial publication, in German, summarizing, the history of Gersbach, Germany, from 1884-1984. The publication contains many photos of this agrarian town.

I look forward to your reply and to anything you can share with me on the Gersbach family ancestry. Please feel free to email or call me directly at john.gersbach@yahoo.com or 434-825-0488 (c) or 434-244-2495 (h), respectively.

Sincerely,

John Gersbach
Charlottesville, Virginia

Re: Letters of Nobility, German

I purchased copies of the Letters of Nobility and Confirmation of the Letters of Nobility from the Thurn und Taxis Archive in Regensburg. They were sent to me on a CD. I had to sign an agreement that I would not place copies of them on the internet, nor sell or give copies of them to anyone else (nor make copies of them for myself). Afterwards, I wrote to the Archives and they gave me permission to have both of the documents translated from Latin into English. I got the impression that the man who wrote to me (in English) knew about my Taxis Surname Y-DNA Project.

Glad to have some follow up to your quest to source the letters of nobility for von Thurn und Taxis. Did you consult many researchers, or mainly imperial state archives at Vienna?

Clovis, Chlodwig, Riparian King of Cologne

I hope I am posting this in one of the right spots....I have come across Clovis the Riparian, King of Cologne. I have found that his parents are either Theodemir Magnus Frank Chief and Valentina Justina OR Pharamond King of Westphalia and Argotta Queen of Franks. His lived from either 398-448 OR 375-420.

I am wondering if anyone has come across him and discovered who his parents are or if these are two different people.

Any direction would be appreciated! Thank you!
