Trying to find info on William Dietrich Schrader b- Jun 1801 and his wife Sophia Francis ? b-Aug 1812. They immigrated and arrived in NY,NY on 6 Nov 1833 on ship "Columbia" with children Charlotte b-22 Feb 1825, William b-1 Sept 1828, and Henry b-24 Aug 1833. All records say they were from "Kingdom of Hannover". Only exception is 1880 census that says Sophia from Baden. Trying to find village they came from? At a standstill. Thanks

I followed up the suggestio above and got "Nordgoltern, D. mit. Gut. Br., Hann. RB" from Meyers Gazetteer of the German Empire.
What does the D. mit Gut. Br. mean?

The originator of the reply was noted as 'bauermeister'. This seems too much of a coincidnece since the relative I am looking for is Heinrich Bauermeister, b. circa 1785 in this area!

Hi,

My great aunt, Elfrieda Hussemann (nee Zebe), widow of August H, lived for many years after WWI in the city of Hannover. She was not born there, and neither was her husband, although he was born in the Kingdom of Hannover prior to its annexation by Prussia. She and her husband were Catholics.

What information I have is from her marriage record and several post-WWI Hannover city directories. Can anyone suggest resources for getting more information? I'm looking for information about her life and death, her husband, and her children.

Thanks!
Paul Zebe

Yes, Gollern was part of the Kingdom of Hanover at that time. In your original note, you mentioned that the person you are researching was born in the Kingdom of Hanover, not specifically in the city of Hanover.
And yes, it may really be that he escaped from military duty.

In the same archive I also found a person just listed as Schrötke (without first name) from Eimstorf (which is in the same region as Gollern). He was born presumably in 1846. And the entry just says that this Schrötke went to America, sneaking off before recruitment in 1868 to avoid military duty.
These entries were often made "after the fact", sometimes years later.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

There is a CH Schrotke and Christian Schrotke that moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, born about 1821 in Bavaria. Also a CHF Schrotke who departed from Hamburg in 1866, probably the opposite end of the emigrant archive you found. He is self-reported as both a carpenter and safemaker. Unfortunately this is probably the one you found.

My Heinrich Schrotke was born 1845 in Hanover. In the 1870 census he is in a boarding house with a John Schrotke in Minnesota. With such an unusual name I assume they are related, maybe father and son (John's age is smudged). Heinrich worked as a laborer for the railroad and later owned a brewery/bar. His eldest son, however, became a carpenter.

I assume that Heinrich left Hanover when it was absorbed into Prussia & that he left both to avoid military duty and for economic opportunity (no proof, only assumptions). Would Hanover records be included in the emigrant archive you were looking at? If he escaped, would he be listed under his real name?

Forget about my last post.... I found them when searching for something completely different..

I found this entry in the Niedersachsen Staatsarchiv...

1. Schmädecke, Diedrich, Stöckse
3. Häusling
5. Ehefrau; Kinder unter 14 Jahre
7. Amerika
8. 14. 09. 1845

Meaning:

Diedrich Schmädecke from Stöckse; Häusling (that's his "profession", meaning simply: he rented a house (presumably by working for the house owner);
he left with his wife and children unter 14 years of age for America on 14.09.1845

So several misspellings..
the original family name was Schmädecke and the name of the town was Stöckse (not Stöcken as I have first guessed).. Stöckse, is a village in Kreis Nienburg (perhaps some 40-50 kilometers northwest of Hannover)...

For more information you should contact

Kirchenbuch.Staki.Hannover@evlka.de

That's the office of the Protestant Church in Niedersachsen where they centrally keep church records. You can ask them to research your ancestors birth date and parents. I checked if they have records for Stöckse but did not find anything. But I am quite sure that Stöckse might have been part of the parish of Steimbke.... so ask them :-)

Here another link on Stöckse:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%B6ckse

I also found Heinrich Schmädecke in the archive:
His entry just says:

1. Schmädecke, Heinrich, Stöckse
3. Häusling
7. Amerika
8. 14. 09. 1845

Meaning:

Heinrich Schmädecke, Stöckse; Häusling (meaning see above); left for America on 14.09.1845

The family you are looking for was most certainly from Stöcken. Stöcken nowadays is part of Hannover city.
They were probably Protestant. So you could ask here about church records ...

Kirchenbuch.Staki.Hannover@evlka.de

That's the email address of the office of the Protestant church in Niedersachen where church records are centrally kept. They will certainly know to which parish Stöcken belonged at the time and can help to find the records.

As you do know his birth date and the name of his parents perhaps the entry can be verified in the church records.
Then you can go on... Good luck

By the way, I also found him in the emigrants archive of the Niedersachsen Staatsarchiv - with an additional interesting comment.

Here he is listed as:

Hülster, Hermann Reinhart Ludwig
born 31.05.1851, Haselünne
He emigrated on 31.12.1866 to Amsterdam (Holland);
add. comment: he has relatives in Amsterdam

So may be, he went on from Amsterdam to the US.

Re: Herman Schroeder of Lamstedt and Marie Woelber of Bulkau

Hi,

I see you are interested in your ancestry from Lamstedt and Bülkau (or, if you don't want to use umlauts, Buelkau). It is not necessary to hire someone in Germany to do all of your research. If you have access to a LDS (Mormon) Family History Center, you can do much of it yourself using microfilms of the church record for Lamstedt and Bülkau and the genealogy records of the Lamstedter Bördemuseum, the local history museum in Lamstedt.

I looked up your Schröder/Schroeder family in the Lamstedt church and Bördemuseum records and determined that the parents of Hermann Schröder, Christoph Schröder and Catharine Wölpern, had moved to Lamstedt from other places. The Bördemuseum records did not give a marriage date for Christoph and Catharine but did list the births (and some deaths) of seven children in this family: 1) Matthias, * 6 Jun 1834; 2) Nikolaus, * 2 Jan 1836, + 9 Jan 1836, 3) Wilhelm, * 21 Jan 1837, 4) Nikolaus, * 28 May 1839, 5) Anna, * 26 Dec 1842, + 2 Jan 1843, 6) Tewes, * 19 Jan 1844 and 7) Harm (Hermann) * 6 Feb 1848. I then looked up each of these records in the Lamstedt Kirchenbuch (church book). The baptismal record for Matthias (actually his full name was Matthees Hinrich) stated that the mother, Catharina Wülbern (not Wülpern), was from the nearby village of Bülkau and that one of the godparents was Ratje Hinrich Schröder from the village of Neuhaus about 15 or so miles north of Lamstedt.

While I am on the subject of Baptismal records, let me give you a transcription of the baptismal record for Hermann Schröder:

1848 Geborne und Getaufte eheliche

15. Februar
den 6ten Christopher Schröder, Bäcker in Lamstedt, und
Catharine, geborne Wülbern, einen Sohn, geborne den
26sten Januar, Abends 6 Uhr, genannt
Hermann
Gevattern: Gerd Hinrich Sticht, Christopher Kröger,
Anna Elisabeth Rothermel, alle aus Lamstedt.

This record states that Hermann (not Harm as indicated in the Bördemuseum records), was born on 26 Jan 1848 and was baptized on 6 Feb 1848. So the Bördemuseum records were wrong on two counts.

Even though the I then checked the Lamstedt marriage records back to 1830 but did not find any marriage for Christoph and Catharine.

The Bördemuseum records did list a death date and an approximate birthdate for Christopher Schröder. He was born in about 1805 and died on 4 Jan 1875. No birth or death dates were given for Catharine Wülpern/Wülbern. The Bördemuseum record also indicated that Hermann's older brother, Wilhelm, married a woman by the name of Maria Meyer, the daughter of Johann Meyer from the village of Wanna, on 28 Mar 1867. Wilhelm and Maria had one daughter who was born in Lamstedt, Anna, who was born on 17 July 1867.

I was not able to verify any of these later Lamstedt records because the microfilmed church records end in the year 1852.

I next went to the Bülkau church records and immediately was successful. The following is the marriage record for Christopher Schröder and Catharine Wölber (not Wülpern or Wülbern):

Copulirte 1834

den 3ten April der Junggeselle Christopher Schröder, des
Tewes Schröder, Gastwirth zu Neuhaus ehel. Sohn, mit
der Jungfrau Catharina Wölber, des Matthias Wölber,
Tischermeister in N.E. ehel. Tochter. Im Hause
copulirt.

This record states that Christopher's father was Tewes Schröder, an innkeeper from Neuhaus and that Catharina's father was Matthias Wölber, a master joiner from the Nordende part of Bülkau. The couple were married at home (obviously the home of Matthias Wölber).

Unfortunately, I was not able to look for the baptismal record of your other ancestor from Bülkau, Marie Wölber/Woelber, because the microfilmed Bülkau church records also end in 1852.

I was able to find the following baptismal record for Catharina Wölber:

1809 Getaufte eheliche

den 7ten April Mathias Wölber, Tischler in N.E. und Rebeck
geb. Ahlf eine Tochter den 5ten ejusd. geboren, genannt
Catharina
Gevatter: Hinrich Reyels, Schmidt in N.E., Johann Bösch
des Bartold Martin Bösch, Hausmann in N.E. Sohn, Anna
Reyels des Peter Christian Reyels, Brandeweinbrenner bey
der Kirche Ehefrau, Catharina Meyer, Hinrich Meyer,
Hausmann aus Cadenbergen Ehefrau, Margarete Binde, der
Peter Binde, Schuster zu Norden der Kirch Ehefrau.

Catharina was born on 5 April 1809 and was baptized on 7 April. Her parents were Mathias Wölber, a joiner from the Nordende, and Rebeck(e)nee Ahlf.

I also found the marriage record for Mathias Wölber and Rebeck Ahlf:

1800 Copulirte

d. 30sten October der J.gesell Mathias Wölber des Claus
Wölber Tischler zu N.d. Kirche ehel. Sohn mit d. Jnfr.
Rebeck Ahlfs, des Hinrich Ahlfs, Hausmann in N.E.
eheliche Tochter.

The batchelor (Junggesell) Mathias Wölber, the son of Claus Wölbern, a joiner living north of the church (N.d. Kirche = Nord der Kirche, where Kirche is the church), was married to the spinster (Jgfr = Jungfrau) Rebeck(e) Ahlf, the daughter of the farmer (Hausmann = farmer) Hinrich Ahlf from the Nordende on 30 Oct 1800.

(Note: This record was the most difficult of the records to read. The Lamstedt records are quite legible and so are the later Bülkau records. Some of the earlier Bülkau records are more difficult to read, however.)

I also found a 20 May 1768 marriage record for Claus Wölber, a widow from Norden der Kirche, who married Margaretha Tiedemann, the daughter of the late Marten Tiedemann from the Nordende.

I do not have ready access to the Neuhaus records, but they are available through the LDS Family History Centers. Most LDS churches have Family History Centers.

The records that I have quoted required about three hours to find. I admit that I am rather experienced with the Lamstedt records, but this is the first time that I have seriously researched the Bülkau records. The LDS FHL microfilm numbers that I used were as follows:

2126096 Lamstedter Bördemuseum Stammtafeln, M-Z
1189000 Lamstedt Kirchenbuch 1806-1836
1189501 Lamstedt Kirchenbuch 1836-1852
1188958 Bülkau Kirchenbuch 1816-1852
1188957 Bülkau Kirchenbuch 1715-1726, 1746, 1751-
1752, 1759-1815.

Please contact me directly at fredbuck@sprynet.com if you need additional assistance.

My best regards,

Fred Buck
Cincinnati, Ohio

FamilySearch.com has books and microfilm rolls that can be rented and viewed at yout locah Family History center. I have rented a number of microfilm rolls for six dollars each, including one roll of church records. They are handwritten in an older German style, but you can usually understand and read the names, months, days of the month and years. Before you go into read the microfilm, you want to have a cheat sheet perpared with translations of genealogical words in German, such as birth, baptized, marriage, death, and dies.

Your husband's ancestor was probably protestant ????...

Then contact the office of the Protestant Church in Niedersachsen... They centrally keep all church registers.
I checked... for Martfeld the church register begins in 1746.
As you know the birth date, at least the year of birth... They can check the parents and do perhaps some research for you.. whether they had more children, died in Martfeld, were born in Martfeld...
Here is the address
Kirchenbuch.Staki.Hannover@evlka.de

I found this in the Niedersachsen emigrants lists:

1. Wehr, Johann Ludwig
2. 18.03.1836, Osnabrück
3. Kellner
4. Eltern (+ vor mehreren Jahren)
5. keine
6. ?
7. Australien
8. 17.04.1855
9. ?
10. Die Eltern haben 7 Kinder, darunter zwei minder=
jährige. Der älteste Bruder Ernst Wilhelm ist 1846
nach Australien ausgewandert. Er hat vor 4 Jahren
seinen Bruder Johann Heinrich nachkommen lassen und
jetzt Johann Ludwig das Reisegeld geschickt

Meaning: Johann Ludwig Wehr, born 18.03.1836 in Osnabrück. At the time of his emigration, his profession was waiter. His parents were already dead (and had died several years ago). He went to Australia on 17.04.1855. And the interesting remark:
The parents have 7 children, 2 of them are minor. The eldest brother Ernst Wilhelm emigrated in 1846 to Australia. 4 years ago he sent for his brother Johann Heinrich and now he also sent his brother Johann Ludwig the money for the travel expenses.
You can also find entries for the elder brothers here:

http://aidaonline.niedersachsen.de/

You should perhaps contact the local church registers to find more about their parents... As they were from Osnabrück they might have been catholic ????

Spellman/Lange Name Change - 1700's and 1800's Kingdom of Hannover

While tracing my Spellman ancestors in the area of Osnabruck, it was discovered that the name had been Lange then Spellman. Trying to find out why (thinking that he may have acquired land that had been Spellman land) it was discovered that this same person was also referred to as Eickman (or unter der Eichen). Someone is looking at land records but all that has been found is reference to all three of these names for one man. He was married several time, maybe as many as 4 times, and none of his wives were name Spellman, Eickman or Lange. Does anyone have an answer to this puzzle? Thank you.

Barb, unfortunately, vital statistics in Germany have always been kept at the local town level, so without an exact place of birth, you will not find a baptism. You certainly won't find a birth record in any event, as these did not become commonplace until about 1879.

We think Carsten lived at a village called Wegholz near Hanover and that he left there in 1855 to immigrate to USA. Carsten's son John Heinrich MEYER (1846-1926), a direct ancestor of my children, was born at Vacha in 1846. Carstem amd Dorothea had about four children in Germany, and about four more in USA (not counting two stillborns) including Eleonore Christina Dorothea "Nella" KOESTER, and Carl Meyer who married Anna EHLERS, This family lived in Benton Co. Iowa at one time.

John Heinrich MEYER (1846-1926) was my late husband's grandfather. He married Anna Christina Magdelena UCK in 1885, and Bertha LINDEMANN in 1900. He had five children by each wife, and he died in Chattanooga, TN in 1926.

Can anyone tell me anything about Heinrich Dietrich MEYER and Margaretha CLAUSEN? Who were their parents?

Hi there,
I've looked on this German archive site to see if your relatives are mentioned - I looked for "Hoppe" as the other surname brought up far too many results. Although that surname is included, unfortunately not the girl you're looking for.

Although you state your ancestors came from Hanover I think maybe they lived in the Kingdom of Hanover, which we now know as Saxony and Lower Saxony in Germany. The royal family would have the use of more than one castle which will make your search a bit more difficult. This webpage shows some Saxony castles(schloss)in Germany
http://www.germany.co.uk/Culture/Castles/article,Charlottenb...

and this page shows that the king was born in a Berlin hotel altho I don't know why as there's a castle in Berlin http://www.answers.com/topic/george-v-of-hanover

Good luck,
Rena

Hi,
I found some of my family on this very interesting German site which names of the fallen/killed soldiers. You can search (suche) by either surname or the name of the village where they originated. For instance if you search for "Stein" a list of battles and the year will appear, each gives a link to the page which gives men's names and other information

http://www.denkmalprojekt.org/index.htm

Good Luck,
Rena

Hi,

Usually migrants from Europe attended german Lutheran or Catholic churches, and I think you need to find the earliest church records which should give you the place where your relatives were born in Hannover. I have looked on this website for passenger arrivals but the earliest was 1850's
http://www.castlegarden.org/about.html

I have also looked on the UK national archive website for mention of a Fer(r)is in the British or Hannoverian army before 1850's - there are quite a few from Scotland, Ireland and England so perhaps you should visit the site yourself.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

I also looked to see if your family were importers/exporters which would explain why one member of your family were in Hannover - I found a Ferris grocer in Truro cornwallin yr 1810, which is by the sea, plus a Henry Feris in Liverpool so there's a possibility if only yours were English

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Good Luck,
Rena in England

Hi, me and my father have been doing some more reserach into our family name for the past couple of days and have ran into a post you made about our family name 'Jantzen' on a website. We are, to our knowledge, the only Jantzen family living in england. We have traced it back to 1801 (Hanover, Germany) however our family has always believed it to be Norwegian. if you have any information on this please get in touch.
Hi !

I´m from germany. The name seems to bee Körber / Koerber. A Körber is sb. who made baskets or cages for amimals of pasturage.
The village is Osterwald (= means Easterforest)near the boarder to the netherlands. It is about 330 km far away from the town Hannover, but it belonged in former times to the kingdom of Hannover.
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osterwald
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osterwald

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp

On LDS is one Heinrich Koerber who married a Catharine Meyer.
I am in Australia which makes research in Germany very difficult.

I would like to find a MARRIAGE between Sophie/Sophia ZIESENITZ and surname GROTTHART sometime around 1840's.

(Possibly in the Hanover area.)

Sophia GROTTKAST arrived in Australia 1849 and I am wondering if she may have been a widow as she bears some children here in Australia using that (and var. spellings) as her maiden name, she marries in 1854 using GROTTHART as her maiden name, she then goes on to have 5 children using ZIESENITZ (var. spellings)as her maiden name.

Can anyone help with looking for a Marriage between ZIESENITZ/GROTTKAST etc. approx. 1840's, births of any children and maybe even a DEATH for husband of this family if found.....?

Fingers crossed.....

Barb "Down Under"

I am looking for a connection for my Great Great Grandmother. Her name was Luise Marie Sophie Dorothee Nieber. In America, we have known her as Louisa. I have a number of photographs, as well as some pages of the family bible... She was born 09 Sep 1849 in a town called Hudenmühlen. This is in an area of Hanover, Germany called the "Heidmark". Louisa married a guy named Christoph Heinrich Friedrich Grünhagen on 07 Feb 1875 in Schwarmstedt. They had two daughters, one of which died as an infant. The other was named Luise Anna Grünhagen, but we knew her as Anna. She was born 05 April 1877 in Essel. Several years later, the family immigrated to America. They settled in Douglas County, Minnesota. Do you think you can connect my Luise/Louisa to your family?

If so, I have photographs of this family that I would be happy to share. You can contact me directly at Casserly@rrv.net
