> Thank you for attaching the arrival manifest for Martin ERMEL.
No, thank you for trying to help.
> I clearly see Galicy [Galicia] written. To me the location seems like Suszno/Luszno.
I think so too, but there doesn't seem to be anything resembling that anywhere.
> I see a X and some sort of numbers above Martin's name.
Yes, I assumed that to be a check on his brother entering Canada, since that's where he said he was going. Several of his family members arrived in 1901 and that date looks very much like 1901.
> Was your Martin naturalized citizen? Did he have social security numbers? Sometimes a place of birth on a Draft Registration Form.
Unfortunately no, not that anyone knows of. His son, Philip, who accompanied him over the border into the US says that even he himself was never a naturalized citizen. He said it was odd how it never became an issue and he even fought in WWII, got his own social security number when they began to require it and so on, but no one ever asked him for any proof of citizenship.
As far as Martin having a SSN, I've not yet come across it. He has to have had one though because he died in the 1960s.
> There is location Suszno in Poland but don't believe this was Galicia. Also one Suszno in Ukraine.
Yes, I agree. That was what we were going around about earlier.
> Martin ERMEL came to America in 1902 thru NY Ellis Island; went North to Canada, was married there, had 2 children born there and then in 1920 came back to America thru North Dakota. Did I get that right ?
Yes, they seem pretty well documented in Canada.
> It sure would be good to see the Canada thru North Dakota border crossing. I suspect the Suchnowf, is not transcribed correctly. Maybe it is Suchowola. No way to know without seeing it written.
Again, I agree. I'll have to request the reels, I'm afraid. It also is possible that he was born somewhere else but actually grew up in another location. Again, no way to really know without finding out other information.
Thank you again!
