Help with Names of Towns and Regions - Tarnopol

Surnames: Stankiewicz, Furman
Hello,

I recently began researching a branch of my husband's family (surnames: Stankiewicz and Furman) and am having extreme difficulty with the names of the towns and regions. I have a couple of documents that are extremely old and fragile with family information on them, written in Latin and Polish, respectively. They are difficult to read, but I would like to provide what I have in hopes that someone may recognize the names.

The family was from Poland/Austria/Galicia (depending on the source), specifically the region of Tarnopol. One document is a document from the church with the following information:

Districtus: Luatat (?)
Parochia: Hatuszczynce (?)

The document also lists a town that I have come across in other documents but cannot locate on a map. Transcribed to the best of my ability, it looks like "Romanove Lioto".

A second document lists the county (powiecie) of Zbarnskim (?). Again, my apologies, because I know these spellings are incorrect. This document lists the religion of the family, with there being two distinct ones. The first says "greek katol." - an abbreviation for Greek Catholic perhaps? The second looks like "rzysn. katol." - an abbreviation for Russian Catholic?

I thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this.

Appreciatively,
Leigh

It's probably Romanowe Siolo, which was/is in the administrative district of Zbaraz. The Roman Catholic parish was in the village of Haluszczynce (I think that covers another one) and the Greek Catholic parish was in Kujdance.

Roman Catholic would be rzymsko-katolicki, Greek Catholic would be grecko-katolicki.

Check the Family History Library catalog at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...

to see if there are any microfilmed church records. The records are cataloged by the name of the parish village.

A good resource for village names, etc. is the "Genealogical Gazetteer of Galicia" by Brian Lenius. You can track it down by doing a Google search on Brian's name.

Leigh,

Glad I could help. Some nice old maps of the area can be found here:

http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm

Tarnopol is in the map stored as 43-50.jpg and Romanowe Siolo in next to it in 44-50.jpg (Note the numbers across the top and down the left side.)
