A history of settlements in Bukovyna

There are a series of articles on the history of settlements in Bukovyna (Povestea aşezărilor bucovinene) published in Monitorul de Suceava (a Romanian multimedia news company), written by Ion Drăguşanul. The series briefly chronicles the settlement of 400+ towns and villages located in Bukovyna (North and South), some dating back to the 15th century. Mr. Drăguşanul has also published and edited several articles and books of ethnohistorical interest on Bukovyna.

I have compiled a list of these articles and uploaded the file to: http://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwkfBQUgnzvGa2txdDdMaFRvcDQ/e.... Clicking on the name of the town/village will link you to the respective article. Note that I have left the town/village name as is in Romanian.

All of the articles are written in Romanian. Web-based translation software isn’t always on the mark, but one can usually get the gist of what is written.

Richard

Halpark,
I very much appreciate your continued interest in the disappearance of villages like Diamantheim and it is fantastic that you met this contact who then referred you onward into the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Russian destruction of these villages makes the most sense to me, also. This is another clue that fills in the missing pieces for my family's past.
I assume the Mennonite is "the son-in-law of the lady" who went back to visit.
I will pass this along to Bernd.
Again, I really appreciate the message and your astute fact-finding.
Best to you,
CS

Chris,
It is some time since this correspondence but I have been intending to add a bit which I picked up at an InternationaL Conference in Italy in October. I ran into the son-in-law of the lady I mentioned earlier who had fled from the Ukraine in 1943/44. She is now deceased but managed to visit her village after the fall of Communism before she died. When she packed her three children into a horse-waggon and fled she left a complete village behind - when she returned there was nothing - just as Diamentheim has been described. She did, apparently, find one person who had stayed and remembered her, but never said anything about who destroyed the village. This man is a Mennonite (and I find him a bit sanctimonious) but he is a very good historian and he said his "best guess" would be that Diamentheim was destroyed "in revenge". However he also added he did not know whether this was a deliberate policy of Stalin or was left to individual commanders. Ehrenburg's exhortation to "Kill" was published in 1943 and Ehrenburg was a Stalin favourite - so perhaps it was deliberately ordered. He said if he found anything more he would contact me, so far nothing. However he also reminded me of a mutual acquaintance who is a senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences, also a very good historian, and I have finally managed to get in touch and have asked her if she knows any more. I am sure she will answer sometime. I think Bernd asked you to correspondend with him directly so please pass this on if you want - if he wants to reject it as "Quatsch" - well that is his prerogative. If I do get any more information I will pass it on. Hope it is useful and your reseaches are going well.

Hi Kyle,

Nice to meet you!

Have you ever seen the "Never Far From Eagle Tail Hill" book? There's a digital copy on the St Mary's website (heads up, it's 23MB):

http://www.boianchurch.mareleboian.com/pdf/never%20far%20fro...

This was a book that was published ~1980 with stories about each of the settling families in the area. There are some Esak families in there! There are also lots of Tomas in there, including my great great grandparents, Mihai and Katrina.

I hope that this helps you with your search! Everything I know about this branch of my family tree came from this book.

That being said, I haven't found any new info; I did order some microfilms from the website that the previous poster, rwf_TO suggested, but since there isn't a Family Centre associated with the Mormon Church in my town, it was never shipped.

Best wishes,

Bonnie

Hi bcaborin,

My family is also from Boian, and came to Boian Alberta around the same time described in your message. It Turns out my great grandfather married a Toma, and it is also part of my heritage. The only thing I can't find history on is my current last name Esak. I think it was anglicized when they came to Alberta, but I don't know what it was changed from.

I am thinking it could possibly be Isac or Eshak. But through distant marriages we are somehow related.

On page 47 of the history book from the Bukovina church website, is a picture of Maria Toma, but I can't decipher who else is in the picture.

Page 49 has an entry but what looks like another Toma.

Have you been able to locate any more information on the town?

Hello, I am researching George (Heorhiy) Ewasiuk (spelling could be Ivasiuk, Iwasiuk etc) and family from village of Shypintsi. George Ewasiuk 1880- 1928. His wife Paraskevi (nee Wakarchuk, Wakariuk or similar spelling) was born in 1889 - 1912. They had a child Frozina born 1908 when they immigrated to Two Hills, Alberta Canada between 1908 -1910. They brought with them Paraskevi's mother, Elena Wakarchuk, Wakariuk (or similar spelling) born 1851. This information is from the Alberta Census 1911 and from www.prairiesouls.com as well as family knowledge.
Chris, Glad you find the ideas worth considering. I do not know a lot about Mennonites, except that they stick together and help each other, but I have a feeling that some villages were almost exclusively Mennonite because of their faith. This does not mean that they did not allow others to live alongside and conversely it did not mean some did not live in "ordinary" villages. Obviously this also does not mean that all German/Ukrainians were Mennonites nor that they were the only Germans who sided with the Nazis, so it would seem logical to assume destruction was carried out on any village where it was known/suspected that there were/had been Nazi sympathisers, and Bernd's description of total destruction would point to very deliberate obliteration. I believe that in the collectivisation programmes very often villages were left standing, although the land was taken, to house the workers. The point is that the Mennonites do keep very careful histories of their wandersings and it is possible that someone could confirm this happened - even if no one actually knows of Diamantheim itself. Best of luck anyway.

Dear Halpark,
Thank you very much for this tip and insight. This makes very good sense as I know that 2 of my grandfather's brothers from Diamantheim did fight for Austria/Germany. Bernd visited the site and reports that the only remnants are a few grave markers and road paths; not even a hint of a foundation so the destruction was total.

My grandparents did not mention that any Mennonites lived in the village.

Thanks again,
Chris S

Chris,
I assume that you are the C.Schmidt, 2009, who put the Village Plat map of Diamentheim in the 1920s on the web? Not particularly important but something else occurred. Do you know if any of the folk there were Mennonites? I knew a lady who was Ukrainian-German whose husbnand was in the Wehrmacht. He was reported "Missing presumed killed" at the Battle of Kursk. When the Germans retreated many, perhaps most, of the Ukrainian-Germans fled westward with them (probably very wise!) and where it was found that any had fought with the Germans, the Soviet Army completely destroyed the abandoned/half-abandoned villages in retaliation. If this was the case in Diamantheim, that could be the answer - not collectivisation nor Ukrainian actions. This lady, with many others landed up in a DP camp in Austria. Apparently the Mennonites in Canada, or some of them, clubbed together to send a few representatives to Europe to trawl the camps for fellow believers and arranged for them to get to Canada - in this case I think it was BC. I think the Mennonites keep very good records - so if you still have no explanation of the destruction, it might be worth following that trail. Good luck anyway.

Genau - dem ist nichts hinzuzufügen. ;-)

"but what one would NOT say is "Is here a drinking session?" - if you must, you could say "This is not a drinking session" or "We are not having a drinking session" - aber das wuerde unbedingt pompoes und pedantisch klingen."

Thank you for offering 2 explanations on why it was purposely destroyed. So sad!

I would like to ask you about it's location. According to the article I mentioned in my last email, the Polish and Ukranians called it Szerokie Pole ("Wide Field). I found Szerokie Pole on this 1934 Polish map on this link (http://www.mapywig.org/m/wig100k/P52_S38_BOLECHOW.jpg). If this fails to open up try this link [http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&a... then find the square labeled P52 S38 Bolechow and open up one of the 1934 maps. Then find Turza Vielka and look southeast to find Szerokie Pole. Is this where Diamantheim was located and where you visited with your mother?

Thank you very much,
Chris S

Warum nicht Prost? Man sagt es nicht nur beim Trinken!

In English Cheers is also most certainly NOT used just for drinking sessions - it is simply a way of saying Goodbye, Regards, Cheerio etc. often used at the end of letters or on departure, but what one would NOT say is "Is here a drinking session?" - if you must, you could say "This is not a drinking session" or "We are not having a drinking session" - aber das wuerde unbedingt pompoes und pedantisch klingen. 'Nuff said! Schluss!

Hi Bernd,

There are two versions of the story of/about the destruction of Diamantheim.

1: It was destroyed by the Russians in order to create large-scale agricultural units.

2:It was destroyed by the Ukrainians to deny the Russians any possibility of finding hiding places.

I am inclined to support the second theory which was supported in the conversations we had this year with elderly (NOT ancient - that means like the Greeks or Romans!) inhabitants of Velyka Turya.

Entweder galizien-deutsche oder galiziendeutsche sind erfolgreicvh.

Prost!

Hallo

"Destroyed by the Russians to zuschaffen landwirtschaftliche large areas". Da ich das Original nicht habe kann ich nicht genau sagen aber ich habe das Gefuehl Dass "to zuschaffen landwirtschafftliche large areas" waere vielleicht "to create large agriculatural units for collectivisation/collective farms"
Sie sagen auch "I tend to second" - aber der Zweite bedeutet nichts wie es steht. Vielleicht soll es "Such destruction was carried out by the Ukrainians to hide - what? - by the Russians."

"Do you know what year the Russians destroyed the village and why they did so?"
because germans, austrians were always war opponents at WW1 and also at WW2. clear that germans which once settled in the russian area then were persecuted and displaced, how it always was in and after wartimes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II

Diamantheim was deliberately destroyed during the Soviet era. From the former German cemetery are still found a few fragments.
http://www.galizien-deutsche.de/hochgeladen/dateien/Erinneru...

....by the 19th century, the largest part of Ukraine was integrated into the Russian Empire with the rest under Austro-Hungarian control. A chaotic period of incessant warfare ensued, with several internationally recognized attempts at independence from 1917 to 1921, following World War I and the Russian Civil War. Ukraine emerged from its own civil war, and on December 30, 1922 Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic became one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian SSR's territory was enlarged westward during the civil war shortly before, and after World War II, and further south in 1954 with the Crimea transfer.......Ukraine became independent again when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine

Thank you very much for the history on Diamantheim. I have an article by Heinrich Stallmann entitled "From the History of Diamantheim, the Most Recent German Settlement in Galizien" who writes that the Ukranians called it Szerokie Pole and I found this latter name on the 1934 Polish Galicia map found on www.galiziengermandescendants.org. This Polish map has the village just south east of Turza Wielka. Before he died, my grandfather sketched out the village and it matches the layout on this 1934 Polish map exactly.

Do you know what year the Russians destroyed the village and why they did so? Do you know of any person in this area of Ukraine that I can contact for more information and for more pictures?

Thank you very much,
Christopher Schmidt
