Hi,
I am hitting a wall trying to find these three towns in what used to be the Austro-Hungarian Empire to search their records:
1) One ancestor is listed by her father as being born in "Wassas, Hungary" in 1898.
2) Another ancestor lists on his naturalization papers that he was born in Czecsi, Zigeth, Hungary in 1878.
3) A third ancestor lists his birthplace spelled as Wetgyem, Hungary in one document and spelled Viegem (or Viegen), Hungary in another both list the year as 1876.
Any thoughts as to what these town names are? They were all written by German speaking people who were born in Hungary and moved to the United States. They all are presumably Catholic so I'm hoping to figure out what city their Catholic records would be stored on film at the Family History Library.
Does anyone know of an authoritative book or webpage for a list of names for Hungary back during the late 1800s?
Any thoughts appreciated.
