Hello,
My family is conducting geneaological research of our ancestor Franz Robl, born September 20, 1878 in Mukachevo (then Munkacs, Bereg county, Hungary). He married Catherine Robl in Mukachevo on July 4th, 1901. Both were Roman Catholics. Also, are we spelling Robl correctly? How do I find other synonyms?
I'm also wondering if Franz's parents were from Bohemia as I find very few Robl's in Hungary.
I understand the first Hungarian census was taken in 1868, and before that birth, marriage and death records were kept by the village churches. Does anyone know where I could get started with church records? I'm not having much luck accessing the census data as I don't speak Hungarian. How are church records kept? Have any of them been digitized? I'm guessing they're all ancient bound volumes. How far back does a typical church go? I know Hungary is probably the oldest country in Europe. It would be wonderful to learn more about Franz and Catherine and their parents and most importantly which church they were part of.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska so any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. The voyage to Mukachevo is a very long one!
Thank you very much,
Robert Robl
