Researching VAJDA of "Cari Hungary"

Surnames: Vajda, Somolarnyi
I'm researching a Stephen Vajda (b. 1865) in "Cari Hungary." I got this information from his 1897 New York City marriage license. Haven't had any luck finding the place. His ancestors maintained that he was a Czech and I know that he was Catholic. He married a Anna Somolarnyi in 1897. The marriage license says she was born in "Ruklov Hungary" but it is very difficult to read. It could just as easily be "Rublov." Thanks in advance for your help.

While I was not able to find their immigration records (Vajda, especially, is a common name), I do think I have identified their villages of origin.

Cari was in Nyitra megye, Hungarian spelling Csari, and is now Cary, Slovakia. Your Ruklov/Rublov is actually Kuklo, which was in Pozsony megye, and is now Kuklov, Slovakia. Despite the fact that they were in different counties, they are less than two miles apart, very close to both Austrian and Czech borders. This suggests to me that they must have known each other before immigrating.

Somolarnyi should be Somolanyi. An Eva Somolan(i) immigrated from "Kukla" to Johnstown PA in 1897 and is most probably related, as this is not a common name. It could be spelled Somolan, Somolany, Somolani, or Somolanyi.

LDS has not yet finished microfilming the church records from western Slovakia. This leaves you the choice of either waiting, which could be a long time, or hiring a professional genealogist to look at the church records for you.

Good luck, Janet

Wow! Thank you so much. The LSD does have the 1869 Hungarian Census microfilmed for the area, so I'm going to get that. Any additional info would be appreciated. Thanks again!

Thanks for the links. I'm thinking about writing a blind letter to the Somolanyi still living in Kuklov.

I may have found some more relevant information, though still nothing yet on immigration information on Stephen (Stefan/Istvan) and Anna. Knowing where they lived in the U.S. might be helpful, as I do not find them in the Census reports either.

In addition to names beginning with Somol, you may also find the family listed under names beginning with Szomol. The “s” sound is written as SZ in the Hungarian alphabet.

Relevant entries I found in the immigration records are as follows:
Eva Somolan(i), 15, arrived 1897 from “Kuklo” to Johnstown, New York.
Theresia Somolanyi, 15, arrived 1897. No further information given.
Therez Szomolanyi, 10, arrived 1904 from “Kukló.” She is traveling with a cousin, Albina Mraz, to Johnstown, New York.
Antal Szomolanije, 44, arrived 1906 from “Kukev.” This is a misreading of “Kukló.”
Michal Somolany, 37, arrived 1913 from “Koglo” to Piermount, New York.
Alois Somolani, 30, arrived 1913 from “Bursa” to Schenectady, New York. This is probably Burszentgyorgy, Burszentmiklos, or Burszentpeter in Pozsony megye, near Kuklo.
Alois Somolanyi, 12, arrived 1924 from “B. Sr. Juv.” to Erie, PA. This stands for Borsky Svaty Jur, Slovakia, and is probably the same as “Bursa,” above.

Two people named Szomolanyi are listed in the 1891 Industry and Trade Directory for Kuklo: Jozsef, a bootmaker, and Stephen (Istvan), a tailor.

In 1904, Johan Szamolani, 18, arrived from “B. Szl. Gyorag” to Hazleton, PA. All of these variations appear to refer to present-day Borsky Svaty Jur, old Burszentgyorgy.

In 1909, Alois (25) and Josef (19) appear on a ship list under the spelling Samolani, from “Bursangeorg,” which is certainly Burszentgyorgy. This is most likely the same Alois listed above from “Bursa.” It is not unusual to find people going back and forth.

In 1912, Lujza Szomalany (misread as Szamalany), 18, arrived from Kuklo (mistranscribed as Kiklo), Austria. Her closest relative was her father, Imre, from Kuklo, and her destination was Union Hill, NJ.

The beautiful old map at http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/nyitra.jpg shows Csari in the upper left yellow region, with Bur.-Szt.-Gyorgy across the border into Pozsony megye. Conversely, the map at http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/pozsony.jpg shows the location of Kuklo at the very top. Here you can also see how close it is to Csari and Burszentgyorgy.

There should certainly be much information about this family from the church records, and how they are all related. It would be interesting to see if others in the family were tailors (szabo) or bootmakers (csizmadia), or another profession that involved a trade. Trades tended to be handed down in families. They may even marry into other families in the same trade. But of course this is all dependent on gaining access to those records, either by waiting for their release by LDS or hiring a researcher.

Stephen and Anna lived in Rockland County, New York. Stephen immigrated around 1888 and Anna did so around 1892. I have only been able to find the US immigration record of someone who might be related to Anna, John Somolani, who immigrated in 1892 to Rockland County, New York as well. Thanks for all your help.

Michal Somolany, 37, arrived 1913 from “Koglo” to Piermount, New York.

That one is interesting. Anna suddenly died in 1913 and was burried in a cemetery in Piermont, NY. He must have been coming for the funeral. I pulled the ships list from ellisisland.org. This is really fascinating.
