My mother and all of her relatives are from the town of Aschersleben and surrounding area. The family surname is Grosse...the Grosse's of Aschersleben. After WW2 Aschersleben became part of the Eastern Block - Russian Communist Germany until 1990.
Most of the Grosse's of Aschersleben were successful in smuggling out of the Communist Block of Germany into Western Germany a few years after the Russians took over.
You can find the exact location of Aschersleben on Wikipedia.

Pam ~

I am looking for information on Carl Ludvig Steen (aka Johann Carl Ludvig Steen) born in 1781 in Magdeburg. He moved to Risør, Norway, and married Kirstine Dorothea Bødker. I found his birth date and location an old family bible but have no other corroborating information that Magdeburg is his place of birth.

Earliest Walther record appears to be in Kelbra -- marriage in 1774 of Johann Andreas David Walther; oldest son Johann Conrad had 4 sons; oldest was Jacob Heinrich August (1808-1864), who had 5 sons. Of these five, the person mentioned in my last post was the 4th son, and to my knowledge there was a daughter. The third son emigrated to Canada. Do you have any information as far back as the 1870s?

Gustav Bruno SCHMIDT aus Bad Lausick

Hallo,

geboren 13.12.1847 in Lausigk / Königreich Sachsen

Barbara Schmidt
k342: Thank you so much for your information, I am very happy about that! You mentioned Elisabeth Auguste Teuke, born 2 Nov 1849 --> this could be a sister of my great-great-grandmother Auguste Johanne Teuke and also a sister of your great-great-grandfather Georg Andreas Teuke...
Unfortunately, I don't have the exact birthday of my great-great-grandmother but it should be between 1835 and 1850. I am nearly sure that your Teuke ancestors are related to mine, due to the fact of the very little village Frose.
I really would appreciate if you have further informations in this subject. Thank you very much again! Susanne.

Hello, there is a link in my extended family to Reichardt surname, in Arnstadt Thuringia. Otto Reichardt married Elsa Roth (born about 1915). They were both still living in Arnstadt in the 1970s but I have nothing further. Obviously this is a different generation from the Otto you are seeking. It is a fairly common German surname but perhaps this location will be helpful in your search. Good luck!

His name also comes up in the 1850s (living on the Port Washington Road?) when he published lost livestock notices in the German papers.

The are about 55 occurrences of Isleb listed in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Susanne, my great-great-grandfather, Georg Andreas Teuke (b. 6 Dec 1834 in Frose) had a couple of sisters named Johanne who were born around the time of your Auguste Johanne, but I don't think they are your ancestor.

Years and years and years ago I made contact with some Teuke relations in that area, and one of them did some research at the local church. I just pulled out the results of that, and found that there were was an Elisabeth Auguste Teuke born. 2 Nov 1849 (she was the daughter of David Teuke and Johanne Wild). That is a line collateral to mine, but it might well be yours. :)

There's an interesting Ottawa marriage record on Ancestry for Emilie Ottilie Garske and Charles Albert Bochmer on 22 Sep 1926.

Charles Albert Bochmer, born c. 1881 in Ottawa. His parents were Herman Bochmer and Hulda Weutzlaf. He lived at 284 Crichton St.
Emilie Ottilie Garske, born c. 1888 in Ottawa. Her parents were August Garske and Emilie Welke. She lived at 245 Mackay St.

They were both Lutheran. He was a printer and she was a dressmaker. The witnesses were Albert Bochmer and Ruth Kaufman.

With the names August and Emilie Garske and the German pronunciations of Welke and Lohrke being phonetically similar, at least to a Canadian, could this be Otto's sister? If so, are there other family members in Canada?

If you have any information about anyone who lived in these four small towns near Coswig-Anhalt, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany please contact me. My great great grandfather Johann Christoph Lorf married Sophie Wilhelmine Christineck b. 1786 in nearby Dahnsdorf, Brandenburg and had 3 sons (Johann Christoph, Johann Andreas and Johann Gottlieb Lorf & one daughter Wilhelmine Lorf 1809-1817 and lived in Serno. My grandfather Christian Gottlieb Lorf was born in nearby Buko in 1854. His parents were Johann Gottlieb Lorf b. 1817 in Serno and Friedrika Neidigk (Lorf) b. 1827 in Buko. They lived in Buko until 1868 when they emigrated to Detroit, Michigan. The Lorfs lived in Buro 1650, Klieken 1700, Serno 1756, Buko until 1868. The Lorfs were all Burgermeisters of their towns.
Hans Lorf married Dorothea Catarina von Zerbst about 1725 and lived in Klieken. I am pretty sure her von Zerbst family lived in nearby Hundeluft. I am searching for her birth records and parents.

I am searching for anyone born in these towns.
Herbert Garske family

Herbert Richard Garkse was born 27 Jun 1941 in Weferlingen. He arrived in Quebec on Nov 18,1956 on the Neptunia Greek Line into the hands of Adolph Sammann. His passport says his residence was Brügge [near Lüdenscheid, Märkischer Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia?]. In his paperwork is a death certificate for an Otto Paul Richard Garske who died in Dünnebrett on May 13, 1955. Otto was born April 20, 1911 in GroBrhuden, Kreis Marienburg [Groß-Rhüden, Niedersachsen?] He was married to Frieda Helene born Catherine Schuller? Also listed Otto’s parents as August Garske and Emelie Lohrke, both deceased last in Weferlingen.

This is all my friend Kristyn knows of her father's [Herbert] family. I'm working on her genealogy for her, but I can't seem to find anything on these individuals, likely because they are "recent" history. The working theory is that his father was Otto, and after Otto's death in 1955, he left for Canada. He married a French-Canadian/Scottish woman. I've made a decent dent in that side of the family, but the databases available on Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org have been of zero help with the Garske family. Would appreciate any assistance - even if it's a local researcher we can hire! :)

Thanks in advance
Tiffany Fugere for Kristyn Tremblett

If you don't have a Germany subscription you can email me the data you have and I can take a look. Please email to schmidt.babs@web.de

I would like to repeat, that this here is the wrong forum for Mecklenburg.
Have you tried to research on familysearch.org? I just did a quick check there and there are number of films for Schneidlingen that you can order and then view at a local Family History Center. It takes a little digging, but is well worth it. I just hit the jackpot with a film. Of course, the one problem is going to be reading the old German handwriting which is used throughout their churchbooks. So either familiarize yourself with it or have some help you.
And by the way, Schneidling is in Kreis Quedlinburg. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the area, be sure to visit this absolutely gorgeous little town.
Happy hunting!

LEISTE & TRAUTWIG FAMILIES

ENGLISH VERSION:
I am looking for information on my great-great grandparents who came from Germany. The following is all I know:

Trautwig family: My great-great grandfather was Friedrick Trautwig. His wife was Johanne. They had 5 children: Hermann (my great-grandfather - born in 1882), Gustav (born 1887), Otto (born 1889), Hermine, & Anna. Hermann was born in 1882 in Schneidlingen, so they lived in that area. Hermann (my great-grandfather) and his brothers Otto and Gustav moved to the United States in the early 1900s. I think the girls (Hermine and Anna) stayed in Germany. Hermine had a child (Else Trautwig) out of wedlock.

Leiste family: My great-great grandfather was Gustav A. Leiste (born 1844). His wife was Auguste (maiden name Köche – born 1850). They had several children, but only two lived to adulthood (Gustav Jr. died at age 3, Anna died at age 12, and a set of twins died at birth). My great-grandmother (Louise Leiste-Trautwig) came to the United States and married Hermann Trautwig. Her sister (Minne Leiste) died in 1953 in Liepzig – I don’t know her married name.

I cannot find any additional information on ancestry.com for them. There is not a lot of information from Germany to research yet. If you have any further information, I would love hearing from you. I only speak/read English, but I am able to use the computer to translate as necessary (same I did here).

DEUTSCH SPRACHE:

1882), Gustav (geb. 1887), Otto (geb. 1889), Hermine, Anna &.

Leiste Familie: Mein Ur-Ur-Großvater war Gustav A. Leiste (geb. 1844). Seine Frau war Auguste (Mädchenname Köche – geb. 1850).

Thank you, (Danke)
Lynn Stephens

Hello, Ed. Thank you for replying to my post. Since the time I made the inquiry, I have gotten more information on the Wieland family to whom I am related through Martin's half sister Hermina; this includes work by a genealogist in Germany who traced the entire family back several generations from Martin. I would be glad to share further information with you if you and your wife are interested and I would be happy to know more of your own research.

Lesley Koster

PS. I still have family in Austin and have visited the Dessau church and been to a Wieland family reunion when the mayor of Dessau Germany was a guest.

Hi Karin!
Its so nice to hear from you and that yet another branch of the Schetelig family is interested in the family history, sadly that is the same info I have, nothing on Andreas Shedlich life or ancestry or even about his wife. I'm also still looking for info on Dorothea Sophia Petersen's family, I've found nothing.

What I do have, but I'm sure you do too, even though you didn't write it down in your reply, is Hinrich Müller's parents, Hinrich Friederich Müller and Margaretha Petersen. I don't know if its the same Petersen family, but it might be a clue to how Hinrich and Margaretha Dorothea met, they might have been cousins to some degree.

Here you can find a lot of info on Hinrich Müller (p.271) http://www.rosekamp.dk/DBL_All/DBL_16_text.pdf

I am a descendant of Johann Friedrich (1762-1817), Margaretha Dorothea's brother.
