I would like to find information about my g-g-grandfather Louis Baum, who was born in 1868 in Germany and emmigrated to New York in 1885. Louis was married to Bertha Lippman (born 1869,emmigrated 1889). They had 2 children, Irving and Jeanette.

I believe, but am not certain, that Louis was the son of Joseph Baum and Amalia Mayer. I'm not sure if they ever came to America.

Trying to trace my gr grandfather Andreas Harms back to Germany; location unknown; too many HARMS families in every little nook & cranny in Germany, and I do not know where to begin. Can find no trace of other family in the USA..He sailed alone (no other family found) & died 1891 "burried by his friends".. The only info I have to trace him to Germany are his birth date from famly records, the birth of a son in church records in Pekin,Illinois (Andreas Harms of Aurich, Ostfr) and the 1880 census (Andreas Harms-East Friesland).. Need direction of where to search in Germany... Review of research below:

*Immigrated 25 Nov 1868 on ship Jenny from Bremen to NY, age 25,occup:Carpenter, listed in "cabin"..-- 71 passengers listed cabin & the rest below deck.
(This leads me to believe that beings he was a Carpenter, & had money to sail in cabin that he came from a larger city in Germany)
*Filed original Declaration of Intent in Peoria Co, IL on 30 Dec 1871 (3 yrs 1 mo after entering USA)
*Naturalized 27 Sep 1880, Tremont, Tazewell Co,IL -- County seat of Pekin at that time. (12 yrs after entering the USA)
*Married Augusta LOHMAN 29 Dec 1872, Peoria, Peoria, IL, by Rev. M.J. Tjaden, paster St. Paul's First German Evangelical Lutheran Chruch.

*Augusta immigrated 10 Aug 1872, ship Smiot, Bremen to NY, age 16 (can find no trace of other family that immigrated to the USA)
I traced Augusta to Germany. Born 3 Apr 1855 in Pilsum, d/o Johann Heinrich Albert Lohmann b 1826 Heinde & Hauke Berends Meyer b 1834 Pilsum.
Family lived in Greetsiel, father was a border guard & customs officer.

* Joseph, s/o Andreas & Augusta:
Birth & Death in the records of the Second Reformed Church of Pekin, Illinois (written in Dutch German script) and courthouse death certificate.
Births: Joseph Bernhard Harms, b14 Feb 1882, s.of Andreas Harms of Aurich, Ostfr., and Auguste geb.
John/Jan ARENDS ~1801 Möhlenwarf?

I'm looking for a Jan Arends who was born around 1801 and emigrated to USA in 1865, first to Stephenson County, IL, then Grundy County, IA. A biography I found indicates, "a native of Germany, who was there employed as a day laborer and afterward as a fireman. He was in religious belief identified with the German Reformed Church, in which faith he died at the age of seventy-four...(and) had a family of four children: Aaron, Dirk J., John P., and Annie, deceased."

I found a ship immigration record for the arrival in NY of Jan (M, 65), Dierkes (F, 57), Dierk (M, 28), Peter (M, 22), and Antje (F, 18) who I think are the same family (I think Peter is John P. and I don't know what happened to Aaron. My John P. was born July 13, 1842 so the age fits)

The ship sailed from Bremen and said the Arends family was originally from Muhlenwarf (Möhlenwarf?)

There are tons of German descendants in Iowa where I am from, and I recognize many surnames that people are researching in Ostfriesland from Iowa as well.

~jason

Btw, we learned in school, that e.g. in iowa there is loads of ostfriesen who actually are still able to speak fluent plattdütsch, but do not speak a word of regular german, i think that rocks!

cya around

lars

My ancestors are from Upleward, Germany, and many people from that area immigrated to the Forreston, Illinois area where I grew up. I know pleanty of people with the last name Groenwald in Forreston. I found that interesting. My Oma spoke low German, and so do my mom and aunts. My mom's cousins are part of a group that meet to speak in low German to each other, monthly. I learned high German in school, but know a little bit of low German myself. I'd love to hear back from you!

Hilary (I live in Iowa now, by the way)

Exactly where in Ostfriesland do you live? I'm sure my father's ancestors all spoke plattedeusche even though they were born in Peoria Co., IL. My great-gr.parents came from the Norden area and the Funnix area. My ggfather was Hermann Theodor Toben of Oldenburg who married Anna Marie Weers of Carolinensiel but their marriage was not listed in the Funnix church books copied by the LDS. (I have the complete Weers family). Theodor was born June, 1841, and emigrated in 1868. I know nothing more of his family, but I've found many Tobens NOT his family. However, I'm sure he was the one listed as H.G.F.Toben on the ship's list. They named their 1st son Anton which may indicate the ancestor.

If you live in the Norden area instead of the east, my other gr-grparents were Reent Janszen & Catherine Beenders. Catherine, born Ap. 1850, and her sister Bertha, b. 10July1846, emigrated in 1872 from Lintel. Haven't found their parents or family either, but I've learned a lot of German in the meantime. If you know of either of these families I'd appreciate hearing about them.
Ruth

This may be your Swalve ancestor you were looking for in your message. I am looking through the Bunde records and have not gotten far enough to find a marriage record for Reinhard to confirm the relationship. Maybe this can help with your search.

1847, page 417, # 106 Reinhard Johann, son of Jan Geerds Viennen Swalve, farmer, and Okkea Jurrina Deterts Gruis, born in Bunderhee on 13 November, 10 hours, baptized 9 December

This was the first Reinhard (or variation) Swalve I have found in Bunde. It's possible he may have died and there might be another child with the same name born later into his family.

Both the Swalves and Gruis from Bunde are my ancestors. Let me know if you are looking for more information on them. Good luck with your research.

Roger Peters

Here is a link:

http://www.detern.de/

Moreover, even today there seem to live a lot of Heyengas in the Leer area. So what you could do is:

1. write to the Detern community
info@detern.de
to request whether there is still a family by the name of Heyenga in the village
2. you could also write an email to the office of Hannover Protestant church
Kirchenbuch.Staki.Hannover@evlka.de
They keep the church register for Detern ... you could ask them to look up your ancestor...

I am not from the Extum region... but I did a bit of "research" in the net...

Extum today is part of the city of Aurich. Church registers for that region are normally centrally kept in Hannover's Protestant church offices... email address :

Kirchenbuch.Staki.Hannover@evlka.de

I did not find special register entries for Extum there. But may be the village was so small or so near to Aurich that it did not have a parish of its own. You should write to the city of Aurich to request to which parish Extum belonged at the time of birth of your Janssen's.

Here is a link:
http://www.aurich.de/index.php/122/0/

Or you simply try the email address of the church office I mentioned above. Perhaps they know.

She died after 6 months of marriage.

Herman Heinrich was born in 1822. The first marriage was to a woman named Foske Denekas (there are a few variations on that name). The second marriage was to Jantje Arends. It was then that my grandfather Arend was born. Reinhard died in 1900 in Germany. Jantje immigrated to Iowa and married John Swalve (not sure how related to Reinhard)and had more children. THey were buried at Ramsey Reformed Cemetery in Titonka, IA.

I am also looking for information on the Kleenes of Ostfriesland. I have information on my great-great grandfather Lammert Jansen Ulfert Kleene, born in Ostfriesland on 12 Dec 1860, married to Gretja Duetsman. He immigrated to Minnesota in 1883. Ulfert is a common family name--perhaps we are related? I know that Lammert's father was Ulfert Auts Kleene, married to Trientje Gerdes, and they had seven children. Gerd and Harm are also common family names and Aurich is where many of my family still are. I would love any information you're willing to share.

Information provided to me about from the Engerhafe OSB about Cornelius Jacobs MICHELS, = 07.05.1697 Eng., + 27.06. # 06.07.1734 in Eng., also states "Schumacher und Wfsm. in Eng." I am assuming he was a shoemaker, and 'Wfsm.' Does anyone know what 'Wfsm." stands for?

I did a pretty thorough search of the archives, but don't see that this abbreviation has been addressed before. Thanks,
Molly Howell

My grandmother, Henderina was child of Heinrich Janssen and Antje de Bohr, both lived, I believe, in Ostfriesland (?). On my grandmother's death certificate, parents are listed as "annie Du Bor" and "henry Janssens". Germany is listed as country of their residence. My grandmother was born August, 1865, so I assume Heinrich and Antje were born approximately 16-25 years earlier. This is all the information I have on my great-grandparents. There are so many Janssens, very few De Bohr's...
