If you will need further help, especially in concrete genealogical research about the von Embese family, I would be happy if you get in contact with me. I work as a professional genealogist, my special regions in Germany are Lower Saxony and Bremen. Of course this look up is for free, further research I would have to charge in a way that allows me to earn my living on this.
Best greetings,
Jens Mueller-Koppe Historical research Services, Germany

Thanks for your response. My great great grandfather Ferdinand Frederick von der Embse (b. 1792) emigrated from Steinfeld in October of 1833 aboard the ship Leontine which landed in Baltimore in December of 1833. He sailed with a wife, Agnes, who later died, as well as several other Germans who made their way from Baltimore, and into the Ohio wilderness where they ultimately purchased several hhundred acres, including land where the old cavalry post of Ft. Jennings once stood, with the intention of subdividing the land for sale to other Germans wishing to emigrate to America. They founded a German settlement at Ft. Jennings, in the state of Ohio, which is to this day, an area predominantly populated by Americans of German descent. In about 1840, Ferdinand married a German-born woman about 30 years younger (Mary Elizabeth Schulkopf) and they had seven children. He fathered the youngest child when he was in his 60s. We are fortunate to have translations of letters written by one of his traveling companions that describe in great detail their experiences onboard the Leontine as well as their search for a suitable home in America. I am presently working on writing a film screenplay based upon these experiences and the social and political forces which prompted my ancestors and so many others to leave their homeland for America, and the lives they built here.
I have already done the phone book look up and have been in contact with one of my German cousins, whose great great great Uncle was a brother of Ferdinand. Interestingly, he was the only von der Embse that ever came to America, so all of us with that surname here are his descendants. Inronically, the von der Embse surname appears to be even LESS common in Germany. There are 30-40 listed by AltaVista. Many of our family members are educators; there are at least three University professors.

My grandfather, Herman R. Doerr, was supposed to have immigrated to USA from Alsace-Lorraine. He was born 4-15-1870, married Catherine Lynch 11-30-1892, and died 7-20-1930. He and Catherine had 13 children: Francis Otto b.10-23-1893, Albert John b. 8-11-1895, Regina Marie b. 3-7-1898, Philomena b.4-30-1898, Lillian Rose b. 10-26-1900, Catherine b. 1-1-1904, John Robert b. 12-16-1905, Paul A. b. 1-1-1909, Gerard Hugo (my father) b.12-28-1910, Vincent Herman b.4-21-1913, Leo Anthony b.2-3-1915, Rita Theresa b. 6-3-1916. All are now deceased. I have been searching high and low for a family connection but have had no success yet.

Not sure if this thread is still alive (it's been 16 years, apparently!!). I am researching the Schaffner tree. Mary Elizabeth Schulkopf is my 3rd great grandmother. My research on that line runs out with her and her husband, Ferdinand Von der Embse. In particular, I am interested in the Schaffner lineage - Mary and Ferdinand had a daughter - Mary Elizabeth Vonderembse (1858 - 1920) who married my 2nd great grandfather - Benedict Schaffner, in Delphos, OH. Unfortunately, the Schaffner lineage gets murky before Benedict. I believe his father was Fredoline Schaffner (1828 - 1864), who came to the US from Havre, France - but I only have limited evidence of this. Any information you have on the German Von der Embse, or Schaffner families would be greatly appreciated!
