Does anyone in
America have an ancestor named
MISCHLER (or similar) or MITCHELL, born in Hessen, Germany who may have had siblings or relatives who emigrated from Germany to
Britain instead of
America - especially
Glasgow,
Scotland?
Many Europeans travelled to
America via British ports, and some for unknown reasons ended up staying in
Britain.
My great-grandfather was born in 1833 in Hessen, Germany, the birth registered in Frankfurt am Main, and although called LEWIS MITCHELL in
Glasgow his birth-name was said to be LOUIS
MISCHLER - or similar. My mother pronounced it Meesh-ler" but I have never seen the name in writing
He was married in
Glasgow by a Methodist clergyman in 1855 to Mary
Dougherty, born
Cork, Ireland. Unfortunately the name on the marriage registration is the British Lewis Mitchell and those of his parents (by then deceased) PETER MITCHELL (
Barber) and CATHERINE
SMITH. They could have been PETER
MISCHLER and CATHERINA/CATHARINA... and the name
SMITH may have been substituted for a
German name.
I found my great-grandparents six years after they wed, in the 1861
Glasgow census and his name is LOUIS MITCHILE. With a
German accent the enumerator may have written down the name as it sounded to him. In 1871 census he is Lewis Mitchell.
When he married aged 22 his occupation was
Glazier. However later he was a Master
Slater, as was his son (of the same name) who eventually started his own business in
Glasgow.
Louis/Lewis and Mary had 11 children, that I know of, some died young. They would have been given names from each family and included: Louis/Lewis, Jane, Mary Ann, John, Robert, Elizabeth, Catherine
Isabella, Peter, George and
Hellen. Peter obviously is from the father's side and possibly Catherine
Isabella.
This is a long shot, but many Germans named
MISCHLER and similar emigrated to
America, including those of that name from Hessen-Drarmstadt. My great-grandfather's siblings or cousins or other family members may have done so.
I have traced him in
Glasgow,
Scotland from 1855 until 1881. But I know nothing of his life from his 1833 birth in Germany until his 1855 marriage in
Glasgow,
Scotland.
Britain holds no shipping lists from Germany for that period as there was free movement between
Europe and
Britain, until I think about 1879.
Thank you.

Scotland (nee Mitchell)
