Writing to Germany for records?

I was wondering if it was possible to write to Germany for records.

For Italy, this is possible. I wrote to the town archives (via email) asking for my great grandfather's birth certificate, and to my surprise, they emailed me back 3 days later with a photo of it from their books.

Is this possible with any German towns? Has anyone had any experience doing this?

Germany had some of the toughest privacy laws until earlier this year, when rules were loosened. Depending on the years in which you are interested, you may be able to write to the town Standesamt (town hall) and ask, but you would need to know from which town your family was from. These records exist from about 1879 onwards; prior to that, you will be searching for church records.

I am inquiring how you did this because I would be interested in finding out information on writing to Germany and possibly Poland. If you give me the information on where to write to for Germany I would appreciate it. Thank you!
