Prety sure it is Bauer - a fairly common name but the word also means farmer.

Thanks. I used to think it said Bauer, but now I realise that in the other two words on the page which begin with a capital B, the letter is completely different (like an L but with a bump in it) so I don't think that is what it says, but I'm not sure what it should be - perhaps Rauer? I was hoping that someone who is familiar with the old German handwriting would recognise the letter.

I also think it looks like Bauer. Since you don't think the first letter is a "B," it might be helpful if you posted an image of the entire document so the word can read in context.

It would probably take too long to upload just now but these words are Bibliothekar and Babette, so you can see that the first letter is very different from the ?auer one.

Sorry, I forgot that attaching them was going to make them go out of shape again! This should look better:

"Bauer" is correct. "Bibliothekar" and "Babette" also. Bauer is old German handwriting, the other two words look like Suetterlin writing. This is the difference.
Look here the web site. You will be interested in it:

Thanks for that, konnig1. I was confused because all three words are from the same document (a marriage certificate) and all appear to be written by the same hand, so it seemed strange that one person would write two different types of capital B. Then I found a few surnames such as Rauer and Kauer listed on some databases so I wondered whether perhaps this surname was supposed to be one of those.

Unintelligible for me is that the same author writes in two different writing-styles. To understand this, you should post the complete document here.
