I am searching for info about my gr-grandparents, Bernard Henry Helmes and his wife, Anna Tresa Afenslag. They were born in Germany (not sure where) and came to the the USA in 1885. My grandfather was born shortly after they arrived (July 10, 1885) in Utica, NY. The 1920 census for Herkimer County, Newport, NY showed that Anna was born in Bohemia/Germany in 1853. They had at least 3 children who were probably born in Germany: Hannah, Frederick and August Helmes. They had the following children born in the U.S.: William, Bernard, Louis. The spelling for Anna's last name (Afenslag) came from my grandfather's social security application. On his obituary, it was spelled Eveslager. I would like to hear from anyone who has information about the family.
