Hello,
I am also researching the Hess/Krull family. I am descended through their son William Hess born in 1848 in Neuendorf who married Amelia Keno in Toowoomba Queensland 1872. Her parents where Frederick Keno/Kienow/Kinow born Goettingen Germany c 1832 and Luise Voght/Vogt born Hannover c 1830. This is where I have been unable to go any further with this line.

Thank you very much for your response regarding Lenzerwische. I had rather surmised that it was an area in west Brandenburg along the Elbe River, but your reply has been very helpful, more enlightening. I did not know that "wisch" translated as "meadow". I am always seeking to know more about the area from which my mother's parents emigrated, that is, West Prignitz, whether it be history, geography, customs, culture, etc. I consider that my heritage encompasses more than just names and dates. Thank you again. Regards, Dena

Hi,
Lenzerwisch is called Lenzerwische today (look http://service.brandenburg.de/apps/wrapper/maps/maps.faces?i...). It is the most Western Place of Brandenburg today. Wisch means Meadow in Lower German, so there were the meadows of Lenzen, a town nearby.
Kind regards

Can anyone tell me where Lenzerwische (in West Prignitz) is, or what it is? I have seen numerous references to it but do not find it on any of my maps. Is it a village? Or perhaps a district or area?
Also, how do you translate "wisch"? I have also seen references to Oberwisch, etc. All I can find in my Cassell's German-English dictionary is that "wisch" is a rag, a wisp of straw, of a wiper.
If you have any connections to, or family surnames associated with Moedlich, Seeforf, or Breetz, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks to the research on our behalf of a professional genealogist, we now know that we have roots in the Moedlich area that go back over four hundred years. The surnames are Alfert/Alberss, Betcke, Bluethen, Cratzmann, Faehrmann, Fran(c)ke, Froligk, Gercke/Gericke, Jan, Klentzendorf, Leusatt, Luetcke, Mertens, Moering, Ortmann, Ratcke, Roehle/Ruehle, Schal, Schultz, Sommer, Wernicke (and variant spellings), Wilcke, and Willbrandt. Some of these families were of Dutch origin. Thank you. Dena Ward

I've married into the Lindes. This Hinsky, Hansche, or von Hansche story is quite confusing. There have clearly been some spelling and possibly name changes, because no name flows easily through the census records. I cannot find the Joseph Linda Family in 1870, for example regardless of the spelling that I use, despite have children born in the previous decade in Pennsylvania. I am starting to suspect that Josephine might be a second wife.

If you will look at the 1880 Census, either Ancestry or the Mormon Family Search site, under Joseph Linda, you will find the correct family (Had been listed as Linda, rather than Linde). Joseph is listed as being age 60, born in 1820 in Bohemia, and Josephine as being age 38, born in 1842 in Baden, Germany. Also listed are the children: Caroline (age 16), Otilla (age 14),Emma (age 9), George (age 2), and Frank (age 8 months).

I am curious who this Joseph Hansche is that you mention. I know the Oklahoma Lindes keep mentioning the name Hansche, but so far I have never found any connection.

Where do you fit into the Linde picture?
Good to hear from you.
My email address now is: gkrockingranny@gmail.com.

I am part of the Linde family in Tulsa, OK. I have some correspondance between you and Loyd Linde regarding the family search. I have located, thanks to Ancestry, the immigration list for Joseph Hansche, arriving in New Orleans in 1847. He is the best hope for the ancestor of George Joseph Linde. It shows him arriving with wife Walburga, Daugther Walburga, sons Joseph and Carl. The elder was born 1809, the younger Joseph was born 1840. So, my thought it that it was the YOUNGER Joseph who was the father of George, rather than the older. Josephine Shaw was born in 1842. The younger would be much nearer her age.

My Christineck ancestors lived in Haseloff, Lubnitz, Dahnsdorf and Brandenburg. They also lived in St. Petersburg, Russia. My grandfather wrote in 1912 that they were of nobility and "fled their estate in Austria" (could possibly be Galacia).

I have found 13 Christinecks on the "Amburger Projekt" List as emigrating to Russia from Brandenburg. Some returned to Germany. Some Christinecks lived in the Taurschen Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1700s (as Karl Ludwig Christineck was a great painter who painted Catharine the Great and her son's portrait in 1760s. Karl died in St. Petersburg). My ancestor Johann Andreas Christineck returned to Haseloff, Brandenburg where he married his second wife in 1733. He was a school teacher.

Christineck wives are:
Christiane Paul from Belzig,
Christiane Michaelis from Jessen of Schweinitz, (District of Merseburg, Sachsen Anhalt...near Lutherstadt-Wittenberg),
Katharine Mueller - 1682 Niemegk & Belzig,
Johanna Lanckin of Belzig,

and sons-in-law's:
Johann David Polster of Niemegk,
Friedrich Polster of Niemegk & Prague
Karl Wilhelm Stein of Neuendorf Beeskow, Brandenburg,
Johann Gottlieb Kuhn of Neimegk
Johann Wilhelm Doeterling of Reppinichen, Brandenburg.

My great great grandmother was Wilhelmine Sophie Christineck born 1787 in Dahnsdorf, Brandenburg. She married Johann Christoph Lorf in 1810 in Dahnsdorf and died in Serno, Coswig-Anhalt in 1863.

Please contact me if you know anything about the Amburger Projekt or are researching any of these families.

Jeanne Lorf Linley Harding

jeannelinley2000@yahoo.com

A "Deichschauer" is the person being responsible for the dike - sort of an inspector, keeper, superintendent or something like that.
A "Kirchenjurat" (old-fashioned German) was a member of the parish council.
"Hausmann" - that's somebody living in a house, but not the owner. He "rented" the house and - in return - often had to work for the owner, e.g. the landholder. But this is an old-fashioned meaning. Today a "Hausmann" would be a house husband that is a husband taking care of the home whereas his wife earns the money.... :-)
"Hauswirt" on the contrary is the owner of a house or apartment.

I can find Friedland, Brandenburg, and a Friedland, Mecklenburg, but I can't find anything with an Alt in front of it. Alt is "old", correct? Can someone explain this to me and give me some insight that will help me find this place?

Does anyone know if there is any substantial material on the history of West Prignitz available in English? I once borrowed a very large history of WP but it was all in German. I can read only a little simple German - trying to translate 1,300 + pages was far too daunting! I like to learn about the history of the areas where my ancestors lived, I don't stop at discovering names and dates, so I want to learn more about WP. For instance, what were the boundaries of the Blumenthal estate?
In the meantime, concerning Moedlich. Around 1651, a Dutch man named Gijsels VanLier came to Moedlich and was in charge of either building or overseeing the Elbe dike in some capacity. (My translation of the German text is a little shaky.) Were there other Dutch families in the area as well? I'm finding a difference in the surnames and spellings from the villages farther east in WP.( Reckenzin, Proettlin, etc) I find that some of the women's first names ended in "n" or "en". I believe that this was some kind of case ending. But was that also true of surnames? I have an ancestress whose surname was spelled "Froelikens" but her father's surname was spelled "Froeligk". I have found in other church entries that the surname Wernicke was sometimes spelled Wernigke. What is the significance of the letter "g"? If you have some information relative to my questions, I'd like to hear from you. Thank you. Dena

My great-grandfather, Gustav Dromer, is pictured second from the left in this photograph. Can anyone identify the group by the flag or the uniforms? I believe he lived in Potsdam, Germany.

1894 Turner Gymnastics Sports Team

This is an 1894 photograph of my great-grandfather, GUSTAV DROMER, and a team he was on. He is standing, second from left. It was taken, most likely, in Potsdam, Germany. Does anyone recognize any of the other people in the photograph?
Does anyone know any information about such teams?

Deanna,

Jacob Ristau was my great-great-grandfather through my dad's side (Jacob then David then Ernest then Earl (my dad)). I have a family booklet with some addresses but for over here, not Germany.

Lynn
