Surnames: Erzinger, Seib
My Great-great grandparents Carl & Clara Erzinger came to the U.S. on the ship Samuel M. Fox landing in New York on 4 Aug, 1852. They were listed on the passenger manifest with three children Abraham, Adam and John having come from Baden. Carl was born in about 1822, Clara was born Clara Seib in about 1825. The children were just small with John being an infant when they arrived. Would like to find any information on them prior to coming to the U.S.

Jack, first just a little background:

The Erzinger family was from what was until 1945 the state (until 1918, Grand Duchy) of Baden, the capital of which was the city of Karlsruhe. Following World War II, the state of Baden, the state (until 1918, Kingdom) of Wuerttemberg (capital: Stuttgart), and the very small Prussian province of Hohenzollern (capital: Sigmaringen) combined to form today's state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, with the city of Stuttgart as its capital.

According to the Baden Emigration Index, the Erzinger family emigrated in 1852 from the town of Wiesloch. Wiesloch is today a city of about 25,000 people and is located only about 10 miles south of the city of Heidelberg. Wiesloch is very famous for its wine, as are many towns in Baden (Badischer Wein).

I noticed that a number of Erzingers, not only the Karl Erzinger family, emigrated from Wiesloch to America in the years 1852 and 1854. Were you aware of that?

The best way of finding out about the family prior to their emigration would be through church records. What was the Erzinger family's religious denomination?

Robert,
Thank you for you reply as it was very helpful. I now know the city that my ancestors came from in Baden. I will give you what information I know and maybe you have more information you would be able to provide. On the same ship that Karl (age 30), Clara (age 27), Abraham (age 6), Adam (age3) and John (age 3 mos) were three more Erzingers. Elisabeth (age 57), Adam (age 27), and Jakob (age 22). I believe that Elisabeth is also the mother of Karl. I have not been able to trace her after she arrived in New York but Adam and Jakob settled in Crawford County Ohio along with Karl and his family. I am unsure as to their religious affiliation at the time of their arrival but all of the Edsingers (name change in America) after them were Lutheran which leads me to believe they were Evangelical. Any more information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Jack, the Baden Emigration Index indicates that Elisabeth Erzinger, a widow, was travelling "with her son" (singular). Of Karl, Adam and Jakob, Adam is the only one specifically indicated as "son of Elisabeth", but I suppose that doesn't necessarily rule out that she was also the mother of Karl and Jakob. Do you know for a fact that Karl, Adam, and Jakob were brothers?

According to the Baden Emigration Index, two years later, in 1854, a Johann (John) Erzinger emigrated to America from Wiesloch, accompanied by his wife, the former Anna Eva Schmitt. I've meanwhile found them in the 1870 census living in Sandusky Township, Richland Co., Ohio, with their three sons, Jacob (age 20), John (age 15), and Charles (age 10). John Erzinger the husband and father (age 51) is indicated as being a railroad worker.

In the 1880 census, this family is still living in Sandusky Township, Richland Co., Ohio, but whereas the name was spelled "Erzinger" in the 1870 census, it's spelled "Etzinger" in the 1880 census (but bear in mind that that could have been an error on the part of the census taker). In 1870, John's wife is Eva, in 1880, Anna -- (as mentioned before, her full name was Anna Eva, although in Germany, she would have gone only by Eva). Sons John (age 25) and Charles (age 21) are still living at home. Son Jacob (age 31) has meanwhile married and is living with his wife Mary and daughter Anna Eva (age 3) in Indianapolis, Indiana. (In Jacob's case, the name is spelled "Erzinger").

Did you already know of this John Erzinger family in Richland Co.? If Karl, Adam, and Jakob were brothers, John could have been an oldest fourth brother.

Another interesting thing is that the Baden Emigration Index shows Adam Erzinger as having emigrated to America from Wiesloch by himself in 1845 at age 21. But then he appears again in the 1852 group, age 27. So it seems that he emigrated in 1845, went back to Baden, and then emigrated again with the other family members in 1852 -- unless of course there were two Adam Erzingers.

Do you live near a Mormon Family History Center? If so, you can obtain and view there on microfilm Wiesloch's Evangelical church records covering the years 1698 to 1961. I'm not sure if the church in Wiesloch was originally a Lutheran church or a Reformed church. Wiesloch is located in a region where there were a good number of Reformed as well as Lutherans. Back in the 19th century of course, the two denominations merged in Germany to become the Evangelical Church. (And by the way: Wiesloch is right near the town of Walldorf, where John Jacob Astor was born.)

Robert, I don't know for a fact that Karl, Adam and Jakob were brothers but suspect they are as from the passenger manifest of the Samuel M. Fox, Karl is listed with his wife Clara and three sons Abraham, Adam and John. Elisabeth is listed with the Older Adam and Jakob but since they all came as one group and seeing Elisabeth traveling without a husband I figured she might be a widow and may be the mother, because of ages, of Karl, Adam and Jakob. I have ran across the John Erzinger in Richland County, Ohio. I was born and raised in Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio which is right next to Richland County. I went to school with several different spellings of the name. They were Etzinger, Etsinger and Edsinger. There is also one spelling of Etcinger. I had heard we were all distant cousins but little else. I now live in Utah as we moved here to my parents getting transferred out here in the late 50's and of course we have the Family History Center located in Ogden as well as the main History Center in Salt Lake City. I kept turning up blanks there until now I know which town they came from so should be able to access the Church records.

If you want to contact me direct use my e-mail address of nans-pops-edsi@att.net.

Thanks again for all the help.
