Many many thanks. This information is extremely helpful in filling holes and confirming hypotheses in my research. Did you look for Carl Tiemann b 1857 in the Niermann database of emigrants? If he is not there, it would be helpful to rule that out.

Also, do you know if Berend was often changed to Bernard/Bernhard in America? I believe that Bernhard is also a German name. Thanks again.

Using the database of emigrants from Wilhelm Niermann, I see Christian Heinrich Wilhelm Niemann, genannt Winkelmann born 9 JANUAR 1855 IN OPPENWEHE, lived at Oppenwehe 44 when he emigrated to the US in 1872.

In a transcribed copy of the church records, I also find a Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Tiemann born at Oppenwehe 44 on 10 November 1857 to Johann Friedrich Tiemann and Marie Wilhelmine (born Clasing).

In these same records, I see a daughter born on Dec. 13, 1842 to Johann Heinrich Wilkelmann & Marie Wilhelmine Clasing, named Marie Henriette Charlotte. Consequently, your date of birth for Bernhard can't be correct. There is a Hermann Heinrich Berend born 10 October, 1840.

I believe Bernard was born in Oct. 1842 at Oppenwehde Nr. 44. I also believe he emigrated to America between 1855 and 1860. I am seeking confirmation of his birth in Oppenwehde, his full name at birth (middle initial could be H) and any information on his emigration from Germany to America. I am also interested in the same information for his half-brothers Christian Tiemann, genannt Winkelmann, born Jan 1855 and Charles Tiemann, born about 1857, from their mother's second marriage. I have information about all of these people after they arrived in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Many thanks.
Michael Menke, mmenke41@gmail.com

Mathilde was murdered in Auschwitz in 1942, while her father was murdered in sobibor- in 1943.

I would be very glad to connect, my Email-
Netaayas@gmail.com
THANK YOU!
Thanks. The information that "His wife died there on 28 January 1861, leaving 2 sons and 4 daughters. (It appears that one of their three sons had died before 1858.)" is troubling to my hypothesis. I know that 1 daughter, Charlotte Louise Henriette and the son, Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm, that I thought changed his name to William immigrated to America and lived in Illinois. The book Varl history 725 http://www.varl.de/CMS/188-227.htm#208 says that Carl Friedrich and Christian Friedrich also immigrated to America. I am not sure which son died, but it shouldn't be Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm , AKA William.

Do you have the information on the two children of Hermann Friedrich Heldmann and Marie Henriette Wilhelmine Kokemohr that wer born in 1824 and 1829, which was the same uears as Christoph and Charlotte Louis Heldmann?
Thank you.
There was definitely not a third Heldmann/Kokemohr brother/sister marriage. The two Heldmann bothers we’ve been discussing were the only male offspring of their generation. I would suggest instead that the three baptisms that you found in Rahden Parish were children of the couple married in April 1814, who settled first in Wehdem Parish, then in Rahden Parish, and then finally in Levern Parish, having a total of seven children. This can, of course, be confirmed by reference to the three churchbooks.

Here’s a brief essay on surnames before 1820 in northwest Germany:

“In pre-modern northwest Germany surnames were employed unusually (in our eyes). Whereas in our culture the surname of the father is normally taken by his wife and children, in the region including Stemwede the surname of the family and their offspring was determined instead by rules of inheritance. Farms were normally indivisible, and ultimogeniture was the custom: that is, all things being equal, the youngest son would inherit the entire farm, and his siblings would receive endowments to facilitate their marrying into other land-holding families. Interestingly, however, the custom was very loosely enforced, and in about a quarter of instances it was a daughter who inherited.

“Because the undivided farm was so important to the family through succeeding generations, the surname assumed by the new generation was that of the heir; if this was a daughter, her bridegroom assumed her surname, and thus it was passed on to their offspring. He retained her surname even if she died and he remarried, since it was the name of the farm, which he still held. Likewise, the widow of a male heir would confer the surname associated with the farm on her new husband, if she remarried. Finally, if a farm fell vacant because there was no suitable heir in a particular generation, the family chosen to take over the farm would adopt the surname associated with the farm. This custom produces, to the untrained eye, a peculiar-looking family tree, in which surnames appear to change at random from generation to generation. But behind it is always the continuity of the farm name.”

Looking specifically at the example of the Kokemohr family of Destel/Twiehausen 20: on 12 December 1753 Cord Heinrich Kokemohr, heir to the Kokemohr farm, married Anne Eleonore Wilhelmine Kokemohr [not closely related to him, despite the same surname]. He died 27 July 1778, and on 25 April 1779 his widow married Johann Christoph Heinrich Toitenheide, who thus became “Colon Kokemohr” and adopted the surname. She died 8 November 1783, and on 29 February 1784 Toitenheide “widower Kokemohr” married Christine Wilhelmine Henriette Klüsener. Their children were, in accordance with custom, surnamed Kokemohr.

Regarding given names:

In a large majority of cases, children were named after their godparents.

Thank you. Is is unusual for Charlotte Louise Kokemohr's father to have the surname of Toitenheide instead of Kokemohr?

Was it a tradition to have the middle name of the so or daughter be the same as the first name of the father or mother?

I have discovered another possible Heldmann Kokemohr family. Friedrich Wilhelm Heldmann and Charlotte wilhelmine Kokenmohr had 3 children in the Rahden parish: Anne Marie Charlotte christened 17 Nov 1816 and died 11 Sep 1817, Marie Sophie Henriette, christened 8 Feb 1818, and Sophie Louise, christened 9 Apr 1820. Marie Sophie Henriette may have married a ___Emshoff and moved to VARL 178, where the last child of Friedrich Wilhelm and Charlotte Louise was born. Do you think that this third Heldman/Kokemohr family was another brother/sister?
Thank you.

Your question that I overlooked:

The father of the Heldmann brothers was Johann Leonhard Heldmann, born in about 1753 in Hessen-Darmstadt. He arrived in Oppendorf with his parents and younger brother in about 1770. He married Marie Ilsabein Horstmann on 26 January 1778 in Wehdem and died on 16 January 1815 in the Schleteich section of Oppendorf.

The churchbook never names the family's village of origin in Hessen-Darmstadt, but a good place to start searching would be Weiterstadt, in Kreis Darmstadt. The churchbook is available on LDS microfilm.

I didn’t note the name of the child born in Wehdem Parish in 1814, but it’s either entry 77 or entry 94. (The other entry is the first baptism to his brother Hermann Friedrich.)

The couple’s last child born in Levern Parish was in 1829, and it’s possible they moved to Rahden Parish after that and had another child. I can check the churchbook if you like.

The mother of the Heldmann brothers was Marie Ilsabein Horstmann, born 13 December 1749 at Wehdem 12. She died 18 April 1825 in the Schleteich section of Oppendorf.

Charlotte Louise Kokemohr was born 12 October 1791 at Destel/Twiehausen 20. Her parents were Johann Christoph Heinrich Tötenheide (Toitenheide) of Rahden Parish and Christine Wilhelmine Henriette Klüsener of Wehdem, who were married 29 February 1784 in Levern.

Thank you. I have ordered microfilms of Wehdem parish.
In your 3 May post, you mentioned that the Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Heldmann(1785-)/Charlotte Louise Kokemohr (1791-) family had 4 children; one born in Wehdem in 1814 and three born in Levern in 1823(Christoph),1825 (Carl),1829 (Charlotte). Do you know the name of the child born in Wehdem? I think I have discovered another child of Johannn Friedrich Wilhelm and Charlotte Louise; Christian Friedrich Heldmann born on 24 June 1833 on VARL 178. Do you think that could be the same family?
Does Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Heldmann(1785-) and Hermann Friedrich Heldmann(1789-)'s mother have the last name of Horstmann? Do you have their father's first name? Do you have Charlotte Louise Kokenmohr(1791-) parents' names?
Thank you for all your help.

I agree that the couple having children in Levern Parish was the one married 20 April 1814 in Wehdem.

The 1823 baptism entry records that the father is a Neubauer in Kokemohr -- that is, he had established a new farm in the Kokemohr section of Levern Parish, which straddled the somewhat nebulous border between the villages of Destel and Twiehausen. [The mother’s family’s farm, alternatively listed as Destel 20 or Twiehausen 20, was also in the Kokemohr section.] The sponsors are Colon Friedrich Wilhelm Gläscher of Destel 86, Colon Johann Christian Tötenheide of Varl 22 [Rahden Parish], and Hermann Friedrich Heldmann, Aröder [new farmer] of Wehdem. [The father of Charlotte Louise Kokemohr was a Tötenheide.]

The 1829 baptism entry records that the father is a Neubauer in Twiehausen. [I doubt that the family had moved.] The sponsor is Charlotte Louise Gläscher of Destel.

Thanks. The two Heldmann/Kokemohr families has me rethinking my line.
My great great grandafther came to the US in Oct 1845 as William Heldman. His death certificate lists his parents as Friedrich Heldmann and Charlotte Kokomoor and his birth as August 1823/1824. His obituary lists his German residence as Rahden and his sister's name as Charlotte Louise Wilhelmine Heldmann, born Sep 1829/1830 in Levern. William and his sister, Charlotte settled in a small town, Dixon Illinois outside of Chicago.
In the microfilmed christening records of Levern, I found a Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm Heldmann, born 11 Aug 1823, to Friedrich Wilhelm Heldmann and Charlotte Louise Kokenmoor and a Charlotte Louise Wilhelmine Heldmann, born 9 Sep 1829 to Johann Friedrich Heldmann and Charlotte Louise Kokenomoor. I assume these parents are the same and the ones that you mentioned in your 20 April message (i.e. Friedrich Wilhelm Helmann born 19 March 1795 and Charlotte Louise Kokenmohr born 12 October 1791 and married in Wehdem on 20 April 1814). I attached the christening pages of Chistoph Wilhelm and Charlotte Louise Wilhelmine. Can you decipher the residence of the parents and the sponsors from these records? Thank you for all your help.

It appears that you’re conflating and blending two separate families. There were two Heldmann/Kokemohr marriages in Wehdem Parish in 1814 -- two brothers and two sisters. The first is the one I reported to you in my previous message (on 20 April 1814). The second was on 11 May 1814: Hermann Friedrich Heldmann (born 8 April 1789 in a laborer’s cottage in Oppendorf) and Marie Henriette Wilhelmine Kokemohr (born 13 October 1788 at Destel 20).

My notes record that the first of these couples had 4 children, one in Wehdem Parish in 1814 and then three in Levern Parish (1823, 1825, 1829). The second couple settled on a new farm in Wehdem (not Varl), which was given the number 174, and had 8 children (1814, 1816, 1819, 1822, 1824, 1829, 1831, 1834).

Thank you for the information. That information matches to the births of their three children: Anne Marie born 1816, Marie Sophie born 1818 and Sophie Louise born 1820, except the mother's name was Charlotte WILHELMINE Kokemohr.
I am also looking for Freidrich Wilhelm Heldmann and his wife Charlotte LOUISE Kokenmoor (christened in 1796) who had four children: Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm born 1823, Carl Freidrich Wilhelm born 1825, Charlotte Louise Wilhelmine born 1829 and Christian Freidrich born 1833. The first three children were born in Levern and the last was born in Varl.
I believe that the Friedrich Wilhelm Heldmann was the same person in both marriages because some of the children from both marriages lived at Varl 178. Do you have any information that links Charlotte Louise Kokenmoor and Charlotte Wilhelmine Kokenmohr?

Their children: Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm Heldtmann and Charlotte Louise Wilhelmine Heldmann were born in Levern about 1825 and emigrated to the USA about 1845. We were neighbors of Hohn's on Rockville Road. They were also vegetable growers. Are they relatives of your great-grandfather? I have interviewed a number of Hohn ladies, now all dead, about their farm since, if I live long enough, I plan to do a short history of the German growers on the west side of Indianapolis.

Any help you could give me would be appreciated.
Hi Melinda,

It is interesting trying to unravel the mysteries of the past. And I met Aunt Ruth, Aileen, Evelyn, Dorothy, and Shirley at a family reunion in the 90's when I traveled to Granite City with my dad Kenneth.

thanks for your reply!

Kent

Hello, Kent--
It is great to hear from you. How thrilling that your family was able to visit Germany. One thing I'd like to tell you is that I may have been mistaken about Wilhelm coming to America in 1879 on the SS Main. I have found another record which makes it look like the man on the SS Main may not have been our ancestor. More recently I found a Wilhelm Niepert departing Hamburg in 1881 for America on the SS Geneva. So hold that possible correction in your mind. I will send you some info on this.

Melinda Elmore

Greetings,

My father is Kenneth Niepert, whom is one of the 10 children of William Henry Niepert. I was happy to find this information about William Niepert Sr. on the internet. My father Kenneth is now 92 years old. He and his sister Shirley, are the last living siblings of the 10 children of William Henry Niepert. I will be glad to tell my dad that I found this information about William Niepert Senior and Sophia Wachter.

During 2008 I took my dad, wife and 2 children to Germany, for a vacation and to explore a little about our heritage. In the small town of Kirshlengern, near Minden, I found only 1 family with the Niepert name, by chance through a postman. I took the address of the woman and her husband, and gave it to my dad. I believe the woman has corresponded with one of my cousins. It was a wonderful experience for my father, to visit Germany and to the town where the Nieperts came from.

I have a few photos of William Henry Niepert and Maude Clark with the 10 children.

I look forward to any other details from anyone.

Thanks,
Kent Niepert

Hi Virginia

My name is Karima Stickan, daughter of Johanne Heinrich Stickan, who's the son of Hans Stickan--both from Brake Unterweser in Germany. My father told me when I was a kid that his father's brother emigrated to the U.S and that we have long lost relatives living in the U.S.

I came across this site and your comments made me wonder that maybe you might be one ^^

Unfortunately my father and almost all my close relatives in Brake and the surrounding small villages have passed away, but I will try to find out more about this and get back to you with details.

I hope this email finds you and your family well.

Karima

I am hoping you might help me or at least point me in the right direction. My husbands great grandfather Gottlieb Carl Fredrich Becker was born in Brockum, 22 July 1876. Family Search does not have Brockum records, so, i would like to write the church for information. I believe he had a brother Ernst born there, also.
GCF Becker's parents were married in Dielingen. Their names are Herman Christian Fredrich Becker and Marie Margarethe Charlotte Engelke. HCF Becker was born in Levern. His parents were Christian Ludwig Fredrich Becker and Anna Maria C Spreen married in Levern. CLF Becker was born in Schnathorst, Westfalen.
Well, i have provided too much information, but i would appreciate any help with addresses you could provide.
thank you,
jeanne becker in waco, texas

Dear Karima, I have checked many Stickan families from Germany and have not found Hans Stickan or Johanne Heinrich Stickan.
My grandfather, CHRISTIAN GERHARD ADDICK STICKAN was born or christened on May 5, 1868 in Golzwarden, Brake. (I have a goopy of his christening record from the church there.) His father was FRIEDERICK HEINRICH AUGUST STICKAN, born in 1828 in Dielingen, Westfalen. Many other STICKAN families were from Destel, Levern, and other nearby towns.
I cannot find a connection. However, you may want to contact LORA STICKAN JONES, who lives in southern Indiana. There are Stickan families there, but I have not found a connection to them. Lora's e-mail is rob-jones@sbcglobal.net. She would probably like to hear from you. Good luck with your search. Do you live in Brake?
Sincerely,
Virginia Stickan

My common ancestor Holle is from parish Alswede and from village Hedem, possibly #1. The baptismal records in the late 1700's and early 1800's are very difficult to read, I have not searched extensively for siblings on my line. From my Holle line are also the Wulffs.

Duane Piere

DOB was the same and she was married to Johann Hermann Jochmann.
My great-great-great grandfather was Abraham Moises born in Schwabach, Germany in 1766: (he had no last name but all of his descendants have the last name Schwarz). I'm not sure where Schwabach is, but the family must have moved to Raesfeld. He married Fratchen Jost (born i 1769). Their son Abraham Schwarz (my g-g grandfather) born in 1800 married twice. First to Eva Eisendrath and then to my great-great Grandmother, Jetta Elkan (born 1819). Their 7 children were : Eva born 1843, Amalia born 1845, Jost (may have been given the name Joseph and gone by Jost) born 1848, Fratchen born 1852, my great-grandmother Rosa, born 1855 who married Anschel abraham Humberg, Levi born 1859 and Hanna born 1864. If you are related to this family, or know anything about them, please let me know.
