Thanks for the additional information. It isn't much but I have her on the 1900 census with daughter Agnes, aged four. She lists her birth as October 1851, and if you notice in 1910 she lists her age as 50, which would be more like 1859. :)

She was in St. Cloud then too, and no husband listed, but states she gave birth to 9 children, five living in 1900.

If you have ancestry.com you should be able to find them there in that census.

Robert

Hi, Scott,
You asked about the likelihood of a German Frings having a father named Andre. In 1794, the area just east of Aachen, what had historically been the Duchy of Juelich, came under the control of the French and remained so until 1815. So, for example, my ancestors who are from Simmerath and Kesternich (where there are a lot of Frings, by the way), have birth records in French, though they were German. The German name Andreas would have been written as Andre by the French officials. Some of those areas changed hands so many times, the records can be in all kinds of languages that don't reflect the people living there.

Thank you for your reply. For some reason Monsignor John Meier's biography says he is from Paderhorn born 1854 and that he studied "the classics at Paderhorn, Prussia (Germany) and then immigrated to the USA. There must be a Catholic college or something in Paderhorn/born.

Emma Meier Schmidt was living in St. Cloud Minnesota in 1910 with my grandmother, her daugher, Agnes Schmidt. She had 4 children who were born in Wisconsin although I can find no record of her in Wisconsin or in New York. She left her husband and stayed in Minnesota with my grandmother. Her husband moved to Sasketchewan, Canada without her and my grandmother.

I have no idea of her parents names or how she is related to Monsignor John Meier or the Schabert family. My mother said the Schaberts were cousins of Agnes Schmidt Slattery.

Pretty much that is all I know at this point. My mom is 86 and her memory is a bit sketchy and Emma Meier died 4 months after she was born in 1923 so she really has no memories of Emma.

Thank you again for your help.

Michelle

The spelling of Schabert is correct. I have a photo and information about Father Joseph Schabert from St. Peter's Catholic Church in St. Peter Minnesota. I don't think any of the family was in Iowa, although I am not 100% positive. I will check your tree. Thank you for responding.

Assume that you meant Paderborn, not Paderhorn.

Can you supply more information on the Schmidt/Smith family like for instance where are they on the 1910 census?

Do you know the names of either of her parents?

Of course you realize that this is probably THE most common surname on the earth, and it is heavily spread all over Germany.

If the priest was a relative, that would at least narrow it down to likely catholic, and although there are a good many churches in the city proper (Paderborn), it is also possible that the family lore was that they were from AROUND Paderborn and not necessarily from the city itself. People back then tended to mention the nearest major city to which they lived and not often times the wide spot in the road "dorf" that was their actual hometown. Folks wouldn't likely know the village, but more apt to know where Paderborn might be.

If you prefer to write me off board, you can, at roalbert63@gmail.com, and I can provide you some ideas to get you headed in the right direction or more help should you need it.

Good luck in your research,

Robert

He emigrated to the US abord the ship "Chance" with his son Ludwig, Jr. in 1764 and settled in the Hummelstown, PA and Jonestown area. One resource indicates he may have come from Etzweiler, but I have no proof. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There are only three Feindel entries for Mannheim, but a few for for Hassloch, 20 miles from Mannheim.

Here are the Feindels from Mannheim:

Matthias Feindel
Korbangel 1
68305 Mannheim
Germany

Tel. 0049-621-756097

Roland Feindel
Zäher Wille 23
68305 Mannheim
Germany Tel. 0049-621-743558

Uwe Feindel
Reichenbachstr. 6
68309 Mannheim
Germany

Tel. 0049-621-735900

You could write a letter to those Feindels or make a telephone call.
If you don't speak German I can translate the letter for you and email it back to you. Or I could phone these three Feindels for you and ask if they remember a GI staying with them from 1952 till 1953.

If you need assistance please email me direcly at byriga@aol.com.
thank you so much Gaby.

How far back can one go with the records? When Gustav died, it looks like someone forwarded his death information to Germany and they provided some German language form back to the family. (I don't have that record in my possession).

Would be be able to obtain any records from Gustav and Elfreide's parents? At the time of their emigration, their mother had remarried so we are not certain of the mother's maiden name.

One last question, none of the family here knows German. Do they accept English language requests?

thank you so very much.

Rich

The birth records of the Sawatzki children should be available at the civil registry offices resp. the local archives at Werne and Luetgendortmund. The privacy law does not allow, however, to hand out the records to anyone who is not a direct descendant.

If you are a direct descendant you can write to the "Standesamt" (civil registry office) and ask them for the records, but you will have to identify yourself as related in direct line. They will charge you for the research and the records. The fees differ very much from town to town.

Good luck.

Gaby (Germany)

P.S. It is believed they had a brother named Karl.

Both Elfriede and Gustav emigrated to the United States in the mid to late 1920's.

Hello,

I'm looking for information about my G G Grandpa Struve. I've seen his first name as either Charles or Carl, and was born around 1813. I'm not positive he was born in Lippe-Detmold, but I know he lived there when his children were born (1842-1854) and prior to their emmigration to USA in 1858. I don't know when he died. They had four children, Eliza (Elise), Adolph (Adolf), Wilhelmine (Wilhelmina) and Herman (Hermann).

I'm also looking for any information about his wife, Wilhelmina (Wilhelmine, Minna, Amina). She was born around 1824, but I don't know her maiden name, or anything else about her.

Thank you very much!
Kurt

My great grandmother, Emma Meier, was born in New York in 1849. Her family was from Paderhorn, Germany (Prussia). I found a relative of hers that was a priest in St. Peter Minnesota, Monsignor John Meier 1854-1918?

I am at a loss to find any information on her before 1910 or anything about her family.

She was married to Henry John Schmidt and lived in Wisconsin for awhile. Her last child was my grandmother and she lived in Minnesota when my grandmother was born.

I was told that she had cousins named Schabert in Mankato area in Minnesota.

I would like to find information about my g-g-grandfather Louis Baum, who was born in 1868 in Germany and emmigrated to New York in 1885. Louis was married to Bertha Lippman (born 1869,emmigrated 1889). They had 2 children, Irving and Jeanette.

I believe, but am not certain, that Louis was the son of Joseph Baum and Amalia Mayer. I'm not sure if they ever came to America.

I started a new job and have been really busy. What I know is that my great grandfather about 13 gnerations ago came to the US, stowed away on a ship, was "captured" by the captain, became an indentured servant in Mass. The revolutionary war happened and he agreed to fight in exchange for his freedom if he lived. He did live. My grandfather, materal was Kenneth Reesman but we don't know how he spelled his name. The Reesman's lived in the Penn Dutch country. I have all of the offspring info from the first reesman in the US. Where were they from? City and Country? I think they were german? Do you know the city?

What info do you have? Please respond at charlene.unitan@gmail.com. Thank you.

Hi - This is the website that I found your Struve information on http://www.lippe-auswanderer.de/index-eng.htm
It is a German site - but the link I sent you is English. They do have email contacts that may be willing to help you locate more information. I noticed on the ship manifest for the "Anna Delius" that there was a man by the name of Carl Merdcord that was a weaver and traveled with them on the ship and to Wisconsin - I notice that there is a tree that had this family and also lists Wilhemenia nee Struve - possibly the daughter of your Carl Struve - you may be able to find out about your family through this Merdcord family. Possibly this Carl Merdcord was a relative? If I can help you further just let me know I'd be happy too. Terri

My last name is Luig. What I know of my ancestors is that they came to Cape Girardeau, Missouri because of the German-speaking community there at the time (sometime in the late 1800's, I believe). These Luigs eventually setteld in St. Louis.

My uncle who was considered the family historian passed away several years ago but always said that anyone with the name Luig all descended form the same family in Germany near Westphalia. If he was correct, I have no idea. But he would often say that all records were traced back as far at the 1500's in Germnay and the reson that they could not be traced further had something to do with a church fire.

Some names I recall were Anna, Heinrich and Benjamin. If I can locate some paperwork at home, I'l post more. Perhaps some of the info may be useful.

Hello Luiz,
Thank you for your reply concerning an ancestor who went to Brazil in 1872. It is very helpful to know the social history of the time so thank you for your trouble. I had no luck by writing to Rio de Janeiro archives.

Regards,

Jenny

Hi Betty,

I saw your post as well as Wilhelm's answer with all these names and addresses.

I live about 45 mintes by car from Essen. Looking at the map I think the house Berliner Str. 209 is still there. Of course I can't see if it is a new or an old one having replaced the house that was owned by your relatives.

If you want me to I can phone all those Herz and Duprés to see if anyone is related. You could also write letters to all those Herz and Duprés listed in the telephone book. If you want me to translate your letter into German, feel free to contact me.

As your husband is a direct descendant, he will certainly get all the records he would like to have. I won't, however, because those recent records are still blocked by the privacy law.

I think of some more steps into the right direction that I could take, but if for example, you would like me to drive to Essen and take photos I would have to charge a little.

My name is Gaby. (Evelyn is my cousin) Please contact me at byriga@aol.com.

Good luck with your research.

Gaby

Hi,

perhaps you should have a look at the Ludwig (=Louis) Balzer here.

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.balzer/101/mb.ashx

That Ludwig Balzer was born in July 1843 in Nettesheim-Butzheim. That is only a few miles from Cologne. Perhaps your ancestor was born in Nettesheim but lived in Cologne before emigrating.

I also live a few miles from Cologne as well as Nettesheim. Perhaps you should get in touch with the owner of that family tree.

Gaby (Germany)

My father, Paul Kriet, is the son of John C. Krietenstein of Chicago, Ill. John C. Krietenstein's father, Fredrich August Krietenstein was born in 1834 in Langenhholzhausen, Lippe. He came to the USA in 1850's (on the Marianna via Baltimore) and settled in Chicago, Ill.
We've also noticed that there are a lot of Krietenstein's in Indiana but have not been able to find a direct connection to our family.
We'd love to hear what you have found!
