I appreciate the response. I have had mild success communication with the Czech Republic using Google Translate to convert my text. I will have to try that route for now and see if I can locate documents from those local government offices. Thanks for the suggestions.

Those records are too recent to be online. The books probably still are at some municipal office. Since you are a direct descendant, you should be able to obtain a copy of the records after you give them documents proving your relationship and pay a fee. But frankly, I don´t know if people at that office will be able to communicate in English and if this can be arranged by email. You´ll have to try, I guess :-)

As for the records, I´d try to look for them at Nový Kostel, Skalná or perhaps Cheb.

My mother Renate Dietz was born in April 1945 in Lomnice (Steingrub) to parents Josef Dietz b.1907 Velky Rybnik (Großenteich) and Rosa Hoyer b.1912 Novy Kostel (Neukirchen).

I have scanned many church registers (actapublica.eu) in that area looking for records of my grands' birth and marriage to no avail. The small town of Großenteich that my mother heard her parents talk of was razed after WWI as part of the border zone clearing around 1950.

I guess my question would be to ask if anyone knows how I could refine my search of parish registers. Assuming that my grandfathers records still exist, any thoughts on where they might be located now if his hometown is now leveled? My grandmother's town is still there, but also I get no traction searching for her info as most parish records I have found stop before her birth. Are more recent records kept somewhere else than the home district? Just a little lost here, with language barrier and lack of knowledge of them from family.

Any pointers would be appreciated...thanks all.
-- Joe --

I am descended from a marriage between a Kolar and Zofka in Cleveland ca. 1887. I know Kolar came from a town called Strakonice in Bohemia (Czech Republic). Figured I would post as your towns bear resemblance to mine.

Her maiden name was Zofka (Zofkova). Her parents were probably John and Barbara Grejcarek, but an Elzbieta Zofka (1830-1905) lived with them. I believe she might be a step mother. I believe Mary came over in 1885. She would have been about 18. There was a Zofka family in Cleveland ca. 1890-1910 who lived within a quarter mile from the house my family settled in. Might be related, maybe an uncle.

Hope this helps in some way.

Yes, according to the 1910, 20 and 30 Census he and his wife could read and write (Was literate). He spelled it Solle and when his wife took a trip to Nehovid in 1907, on arrival back in the states she also spelled it Solle.

Im pretty sure it is Karel, it is definitely spelled in 6 letters, its just hard to tell from the handwriting on the document if its an a or an e.

Hello all,

I have been conducting Genealogy research for 38 years, recently a cousin asked if I could do some research on his fathers line. This is where I dead end.

His Great Grandfather is Joseph Solle

He was born and raised in Nehodiv, Austria, Bohemia.

Born: 6 December 1884

Immigrated to the US, Baltimore, Maryland in 1900.

Departed from the Port of Bremen Germany on the ship SS Rhein.

Arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland sometime in 1900 (I believe August).

He started work as a Clothes Presser and later was a tailor before dying young.

Married a young woman named Mary, about 16 years of age who was also Bohemian but US born to Bohemian parents.

I believe his fathers name was either Karl, Karal or Karel. The reason for this is Mary returned from a trip to Bohemia to visit her Father in Law (with that name) in 1907 in Bohemia as the record shows she re-entered the United States at the Port of Baltimore from the ship SS Chemnitz having departed Port of Bremen.

From there I can find nothing. I have seen the town of Nehodiv through a Google Earth tour and it is small (79 people) and was apparently small even in 1900.,

Any help you can give me in this would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know what the correct family name is, is it Solle? Also if possible, who were his family there in Nehodiv and are there any still living there?

Thanks much

Jeff

You're welcome Audrey.
Look into Leo BACA's 9 volumes Bohemians to America. You need that location to proceed with the research.
I take it the naturalization is before 1906 so no place of birth only a name of a country.
Nothing in the church marriage or baptismal record here in US?

I see that you have info as to where Adolph's family came from in Bohemia. We are searching for where the Posta's came from in Bohemia. Would you have any information that would help us figure that out? Or do you have any information to help us find other relatives that stayed in PA?

Hope to hear from you,
Audrey

Albert Loukota was my Great-Grandfather also! His son, James Loukota, was my Dad's Father that passed away when he was young and my Dad was adopted by his Stepfather. I am searching for the whole Loukota side of my family that I never knew existed until recently when I learned he was adopted and realized I am a Loukota after all. Hope to hear something soon - although it seems as if it has been quite a while since the last post. Thanks!! Alicia

Thanks. Your response is very helpful. I hope you will consider two related questions:

(1) I have a US Census record referring to my great grandfather's home as "Brange." I know that this place was in Tachau (Tachov) district, but have not been able to find it. Initially, I believed it was present day Branka (to the west of Tachov city), but I learned more, and now I doubt it. Is it possible that the pronunciation of Brod could have been misunderstood as "Brange?"

(2) I have other references to my family's origins in "Mayrhofen" and "Godrich Lunhozen" (or "Goodrich"). I believe these refer to two small villages south of Tachau city known then as Klein Maierhofen and Godrusch (now Male Dvorce and Jadruz). I do not understand the meaning or significance of "Lunhozen," and I do not know how either of these places could have been identified as "Brange." If you have any thoughts on these questions, I would appreciate reading them.

Thanks so much for your attention.

John

Hello, in Bohemia under Austrian law at the time, it unfortunately does not play a significant role - for genealogy. Younger than 24 years only need the consent of parents (father´s paternal blessing).
Older than 24 years were adults - from the perspective of law and church they had more freedom - did not need this consent (but at the time without family acceptance you can´t do practically anything ... but that is another question).
The lower limit was for boys of 14 years for girls to 12 years. But the current age was 18 to 25 years (mens also later).

Was Martin in Europe meantime or who is father when Martin Weinfurt is already in the U.S.?
ISTG ( http://immigrantships.net/v10/1800v10/marsala18881206_01.htm... )on 6 December 1888 in N.Y:
96 Aloise, Weinfurt, 33, f, woman, Austria, New York, Klattau
97* Bedrisch, Weinfurt, 7, m, child, Austria, New York, Klattau
98 Ottokar, Weinfurt, 6, m, child, Austria, New York, Klattau
99 Alois, Weinfurt, 5, m, child, Austria, New York, Klattau
100 Rozena, Weinfurt, 3, m, child, Austria, New York, Klattau
101 Jan, Weinfurt, 0y 1m, m, baby, Austria, New York, Klattau

But according to the parish register, was born Jan in Klatovy – City, house Nr.10 on 6.1.1886? There should be two years old? See birth register Klatovy-63, folio 302, on-line page 306. That would explain only the existence of two Johns.

They acted as a family, I think he is the father. But I do not know how it was. On ancestry.com there are several applications for a passport in the name of Martin Weinfurt ... Have you tried the Baltimore harbor, too?

Line Bremen to NY, on the SS Eider, arrived 4-18,1888, it sounds good. As you know from Historical Regions > Bohemia > Martin Weinfurt I found a hot footprint in the village Dnesice... corresponds to the year 1828.

Martin was married before he married Aloisie. Why do you think (or know) that Martin b.1852 was born in Stenovice, Plzen? Why I am asking? Martin (b1828) in 1852 was just 24y old, this means underage adult. But unfortunately the parish registers of Stenovice are not online ...

David, I have checked the Baltimore port. The only possible immigration for our Martin I find is Bremen to NY, on the Eider, arrived 4-18,1888, birth age 1828. Knowing how it is practically common to find mistakes in documents, etc, I think this may be him. A document, even headstone, is only as good as the source supplying the information. Seems especially true when dealing with Czech surnames.
When looking at current day Weinfurt's in the Plzen region, I find one living in Kanice and one in Drahkov. One in Prague and one in Prague-Kunretice.
The WEinfurt surname is of German origin from the town of Weinfurt.
Jean

I have an ancestor named Josepha Borikova of Zinkovy 14. She married Martin Hora of Zinkovy. Their son, Jan Hora was born 1835, Zinkovy 14. Jan married Dorota Machackova of Horsice, and they came to America in 1866.

You may already know, but I just discovered that surnames express gender in the Czech language. Hora is male and Horakova is female. Borik is male and Borikova is female. Novac is male and Novakova is female. Machacek is male and Machackova is female.

I am hopeful our ancestors are related.

Looking for info on great-grandfather George Trojcak and family

Here's the information that I have on my family. My great-grandparents, George Trojcak and wife Elizabeth Levi Trojcak immigrated with infant daughter Anna around 1890. The story from family members is that George was involved in the death of a police officer and that's the reason for the move to the states. I don't know the circumstances around the story.

They are listed in census information from Virden and Chicago Illinois in 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 which states that they came from Austria/Hungary/Czeckoslovakia.

George's info from family records:
George Trojcak (Jan 1863-Jul 1929) born in Austria/Hungary

His parents:
Steve Trojcak - born in Austria/Hungary
Anna Kostkas - born in Austria/Hungary

Elizabeth's info from family records:
Elizabeth Levi (Nov 1866-Dec 1931) born in Austria/Hungary

Her parents:
Andrew Levvi/Levi- born in Austria/Hungary
Anna Wolf - born in Austria/Hungary

George Trojcak and Elizabeth Levi Trojcak's children:
Ann R Trojcak (1890-1989) born in Czechoslovakia
My grandmother - Elizabeth Trojcak (1901-1987) born in Illinois
Mary Trojcak (1896-1970) born in Illinois
John Paul Trojcak (1898-1962) born in Illinois
Mike Trojcak (1899-1979) born in Illinois
Stephen Trojcak (1903-1973) born in Illinois
Agnes Trojcak (1906-) born in Illinois
Julia Trojcak (1908-1983) born in Illinois

I'd like to find information on where George and Elizabeth were born and possibly info about the reasons they came to the State. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kathleen Devlin Monks
