STURM of Budisov nad Budisovkou (Bantsch)

I am looking to collect information on the ancestors and descendants of Rudolf and Paulina (Uhlig) STURM.

Rudolf STURM was born in Austria around 1868. I think that he may have been born or lived in a town called Bantsch (sp?). I have learned that this town may have been renamed ‘Budisov nad Budisovkou’ and now be within the borders of the Czech Republic. His parents were Joseph STURM and Theresa PITSCH. At this time I do not know if he had any siblings.

Rudolf married Paulina UHLIG probably sometime around 1895. Her parents were Leonard UHLIG and Marie MERTEN. Records for Paulina show her being born in Austria, Czechoslovakia, or Bosnia; I know borders and names have changed many times since then.

The couple had four children in Austria: Marie (1896), Joseph (1898), Rudolf David (1899), and Franz (1900). Rudolf left Europe in 1903 and settled in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor County, Washington state. Paulina followed shortly thereafter with the four children. In Hoquiam, the couple had five more sons: Paul (1905), Earnest (1906) George John (1907), Maximillian (1910), and Carl (1913).

George John married Lovilla Stella RICE (b. 30 Mar 1904, Aberdeen, WA). They were my great-grandparents. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
I was actually able to visit Bergstadt last summer. Found my family homes (Nickmann, Sitka) and also some of the Thoendels' homes. (The Thoendels were close friends of my family, and lived in Chicago at the same time -late 1890 - early 1900). I would love to hear your stories about Bergstadt!

I know of at least two instances where the woman coming to the US used the surname of her intended or another relative. One of them was my great grandmother's sister, who was either a widow or divorced in 1898, but she used her sister's married name instead of either her own maiden name or married name. Or misunderstood the question, and the person making the ship's list wrote down the wrong answer. You think they would be showing a document to get on the ship, but the fact that I've found two of these means it is possible in other cases, too. Unless you have found Marie Sitka, do consider the idea that Marie Nickmann could be yours.

Here's the information that I have on my family. My great-grandparents, George Trojcak and wife Elizabeth Levi Trojcak immigrated with infant daughter Anna around 1890. The story from family members is that George was involved in the death of a police officer and that's the reason for the move to the states. I don't know the circumstances around the story.

They are listed in census information from Virden and Chicago Illinois in 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 which states that they came from Austria/Hungary/Czeckoslovakia.

George's info from family records:
George Trojcak (Jan 1863-Jul 1929) born in Austria/Hungary

His parents:
Steve Trojcak - born in Austria/Hungary
Anna Kostkas - born in Austria/Hungary

Elizabeth's info from family records:
Elizabeth Levi (Nov 1866-Dec 1931) born in Austria/Hungary

Her parents:
Andrew Levvi/Levi- born in Austria/Hungary
Anna Wolf - born in Austria/Hungary

George Trojcak and Elizabeth Levi Trojcak's children:
Ann R Trojcak (1890-1989) born in Czechoslovakia
My grandmother - Elizabeth Trojcak (1901-1987) born in Illinois
Mary Trojcak (1896-1970) born in Illinois
John Paul Trojcak (1898-1962) born in Illinois
Mike Trojcak (1899-1979) born in Illinois
Stephen Trojcak (1903-1973) born in Illinois
Agnes Trojcak (1906-) born in Illinois
Julia Trojcak (1908-1983) born in Illinois

I'd like to find information on where George and Elizabeth were born and possibly info about the reasons they came to the State.
Re: JANOVICE, Friedek register copies

Unfortunately it is not enough information to find your husbend's ancestors. There are 4 Janovice villages in the Northern Moravia, so I hope that you mean Janovice in Frýdek-Místek county. Volný, Carbol, Žídek are very common surnames there (413 of Volný/Volná, 224 of Carbol/Carbolová, 157 of Žídek/Žídková in county Frýdek-Místek in 2010). The online parish books of Janovice belonged to Skalice parish, see http://matriky.archives.cz/matriky_lite/ and description in the Kbeqgen's post above. Newer parish books are not digitized and they are deposited in the register office in Frýdlant n.O., http://www.frydlantno.cz .

Now it is question how much information about husbend's ancestor you have, such as birth, marriage or death certificates (or passanger lists at least).

Oh My Gosh! I am SO grateful for this! I have been writing and searching for 20 years but it is so difficult in another country to get a response.

I am so out of my element in CZ. I assumed that my grandparents went there to work (both are from Poland) so I have/had no connection there at all. I did not know where they went. All my grandmother's church record in Poland said was that her records were sent for from "the church over the next hill" so she could get married. Looking in CZ and Ostrava was looking for "a needle in a haystack". You have truly blessed my day with this find.

If I can ever do anything for you, please let me know.

-J Manley
theultimateauthority@yahoo.com

To whomever sent the web sites for marriage records:

Wow! What a great site! It would be fantastic if we could see all kinds of records like that--straight from the books. I am not sure of upi are asking if someone is still interested in finding a researcher in Ostrava, or if you were just replying to the person who was looking for that specific marriage record.
I originally asked about a researcher in Ostrava but did use the Pathfinder people back in 2002. I would have to look through my OBROK records to see what else I might want to find. I think I still needed a birth record for a WYSOCKI great-grandmother. This message should actually go in the Czech Republic Message Board, not the SEVEROMORAVSKY board.
Please contact me directly.

Pat Shemenski
mamaski2@cs.com

Do you know a date of birth or religion?

There are some church records for the Czech Republic that have become available online. It is good you know the area. I have only recently been researching in that area myself and am not real familiar with the transition of the area from what our ancestors may have referred to as Austria or Bohemia or Moravia. But, it looks like the area you refer to is in Northern Moravia.

Here are some websites which you may find useful in locating your ancestors in the Czech Republic:

This first link shows a map of the different areas of the Czech Republic and the websites where the parish records can be found. Not all records have been digitized yet, but you may be fortunate and have the area you are looking for available online.

http://www.american.fm-search.org/index.php?option=com_alpha...

If you need to access the area found on the actapublica.eu site (Bohemia area) for other ancestors you may have from that area, you must register. Registration is free, but the site is in Czech or German, so clicking on the link right above the map will give you visual directions on how to register.

Anyway, from the map, I determined the website you would need to access is:

http://matriky.archives.cz/matriky_lite/

Click on the book.

After you have read the introduction, you can click on the 'searching' tab.

Then, in the box next to filter, type in 'Frydek'.

This will bring up 3 records. Click on the second one...I think these are the Catholic parish books.

Find the area you are looking for, in your case, Frydek (you must use the current Czech spelling).

This will bring you to a page that has the records available for that area. I chose:

Frýdek • římskokat. f. ú. (I believe this refers to Catholic records.)

Click on the type of record you would like to search (note: N= birth, O= marriage, Z= death).

I chose births from 1870 to 1893 since I am taking a guess that your Karl Carbol was born about 1876.

N • 1870 - 1893 • 2879 • Fr VII 22 • Frýdek, Nové Dvory

Click on the book to the right of the information about the archive. (If you were not to see a book at this point, the records are not online yet...fortunately, the records you need are.)

From here, it's just a matter of panning through the images. I advanced the page number to get to records around 1876.

Found a Karl L? Carbol b. 17 Oct 1877 Father is Josef Carbol; Mother is Johanna Micek. (It's p.117 if the link below doesn't work.)

http://matriky.archives.cz/matriky_lite/pages/zoomify.jsp?pa...

Next...I looked for a marriage record.

O • 1878 - 1924 • 8815 • Fr VII 24 • Frýdek, Lískovec, Nové Dvory, Staré Město

Found a record for that same Carl Carbol to Amalie Zahradnik, daughter of Josef Zahradnik and Theresia Pawlik. (it's on p. 131 if the link below doesn't work.)

http://matriky.archives.cz/matriky_lite/pages/zoomify.jsp?pa...))

You can continue to scroll thru the registers and find other ancestors...happy hunting!

Could it be possible that it was in some period considered Poland?
Other 2 Borowice that are in Poland, as far as I am aware, was never under Austria. (Besides, I've contacted diecesan archive in Katowice and there is no trace of my ancestor there.)
My question is, is there any "Borovice, Austria" (in any spelling) besides that one near Horsovsky Tyn? And another question, was this Borovice ever in history being in Poland?

I've lived in or near Binghamton, NY most of my life. I'm familiar with Zopps restaurant/catering/bar - although it closed from the old location and moved elsewhere in the area. My grandmother (husband's grandmother actually) was from Bautsch too and moved to Binghamton in 1921 (married into the Cavanaugh/Madigan family). Her sisters came earlier in 1911 and 1912. The family names are Peter * Rohmfeld * and Kunz (from Schwansdorf /Svatonovice).
I've been trying to research information about Bautsch and understand it is called Budisov nad Budisovkou and have been on the town website. I have found a great old maps website that is very helpful in locating the old towns and thier converted names from German to Czech. Here is the site page if you are interested. If you have info about life in Bautsch back in the day I would love to hear from you. 2 relatives are buried in a cemetary in Bautsch, of the the sons was gassed in the war and I have a personal accounting of the atrocieties that occurred in the area at the time of the war, but am always looking for personal links to Bautsch.
http://oldmaps.geolab.cz/index.plz_height=330&lang=en&am...

The only way to get your hands on Czech records is to (a) know someone who lives there (b) hire a Czech researcher or (c) Go there and check for yourself (which is the option I took). It was hard, but doable.

I checked my pages, and that name is not on them. Keep in mind these pages are specifically for the village of Janovice, which is near Fridek-Mystek, and not Fridek itself.

Hello
Like some of your family, my father's father was born in the mining village of Zarubek near Ostrava and emmigrated to the US in 1907. On his draft registration my Grandfather listed the village as "Polish Ostrava." The village no longer exists. On Google Maps I found a tram stop called Důl Zárubek(Zarubek Mine)to the east of Ostrava in the Silesian area. The mine was closed down a while ago, but I thought you might find this link to an online archive useful. I have been able to find my Grandfather and one of his cousins so far. The page headings are in German. Here is the link. http://matriky.archives.cz/

This is a link to a page with history of the Mine. It is in Czech, but if you paste the link into Google Translator you can get the gist of what it is saying... http://www.zdarbuh.cz/reviry/okd/dul-zarubek-v-ostrave/

Hope you enjoyed your voyage to Czech Republic. I hope to get there one day too.

Hi,

I am searching for information on the family of Ferdinand Fuchs.

Ferdinand was born at Přerov (Prerau) on 11.09.1900. He remained here until 1926, when he moved to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm (Rosenau). In 1928 he married Mathilde Vymola.

The last known information we have on him is that they divorced and he was residing in Augsburg when she emigrated to Australia.

We would love some information on his family - parents, siblings etc. and would appreciate any help you can offer us.
