Hello, I find a Jan (John) Makovsky marriage in 1914 in Gottwaldov (Zlin). Could this be Anna's father? When was Anna born? Did she come to the states? Did she marry a Plesak/Plesac?
Jean

Re: anna makovska -- Proper Way to Post

OJ Plesek:

I see from the number of posts that you are a new user. There are some conventions that you should follow when using these boards.

1. You posted the same message 3 times to this board. Ancestry now has an edit option for authors, so you can go back and delete the two extra messages. I had a duplicate LONG one and was embarrassed for about two years, until they allowed me to delete it.

2. It's ok that you posted to two Moravian boards, because you might not know which region of Moravia she was from. Generally, though, the regular readers will check all the boards for the Czech Republic.

3. It is absolutely essential that you give as much data as you already have. You should go read some of the other posts in the board to see what other have done. You will find that there are maybe a dozen or so participants who help, but only if they have a chance to solve your problem in under an hour. (My husband's colleague called me with a problem he had been working on for 15 years, and because he gave me one very important clue, I was able to find the answer in 40 minutes. Really.)

4. So what would we like to see? Birth date, even if approximate, location in US the subject immigrated to, immigration date, even approximate, town where from, even if it is a phonetic spelling as you remember someone hearing it. If you were to say "she's from Dolnee Lowcatch" a Czech reader would know you meant "Dolni Loučky".

So any details you have, however insignificant they seem, could help out. Otherwise, unless someone who has already added Anna to their tree happens upon your post, you won't get any responses.

We tend to divvy up the work. A few of us find more clues in the US, the participants in the CR look at the various archives online. Do go take a look at the last dozen or so postings on this board. It is very educational.

Mary in Omaha

Hello. I'm looking for help transcribing the name of the mother of my husband's great great grandmother, Barbora Ondraček. In Brno actapublica birth record, 1829, Signatura Lomnice 576, snimek 107 (physical page 17). House 16. Screen snip attached, which might be enough.

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/3492/?strana=10...

I cannot read her mother's surname, as usual.

Barbora had 6 siblings; the name looks the same to me in all of their records, same style of writing.

Here is a link to Barbora's marriage record, which also lists her mother's name.
http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/3503/?strana=85

Finally, here is the link to her parents' marriage record in 1826.

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/3501/?strana=56#

Thank you in advance.

Again, thank you so much. I had looked through the manual index, letter B, and didn't find anything for Page 7. i will go back and look again, this time at K. It's always possible that the indexer missed one. See attached. It does look like the entry got messed up, or two were combined on one line.

Mary

Hi I can't help you on the Kriz side except that I found an article online just a few days ago that might interst you. www.stltoday.com "Toast to the last man stirs a spirited gathering". I presume if you live with your granparents you may already have this! I actually found it while searching for more info on my grandmother Aube Espenschied, I think she was your grandmothers aunt. Do you know if her father was Clyde Charles Espenschied? OMG I have been trying to find more info on the Espenschied. I just figure your grandmother was probably named after my grandmother. She died when my dad was a young boy. My Aube was married to Thomas C. Ferrenbach. If you have any interest I can try to help if I can. I do have a couple pictures of my grandmother Aube. If you can't find that article let me know & I will e-mail a copy to you. I would be happy to exchange info with you.

Thank you again, very much. I have dug further into House 16 of Sklene (Sklenny) which is in the Horni Bory records, which is where Katharina and Johanna came from. I need to do a lot of sorting out, as it looks like three related families moved through that house. And everyone was married twice, or not married at all. To further confuse things, it looks like there are two Katharinas and maybe even two Johannas. Until I list all these people, it will be a while until I can ask my big question.

Transcribe/Translate two Alexovice Marriage Records

Hello. Here I am again, making this discussion board look like it belongs to me.

This question is going to be part of a more complex question later. But it will help to get some of the data more in place before I put that question out here.

In Alexovice, near Ivančice, Tomaš Vejrosta married twice when he was older than 50. The bride’s name in the first marriage looks like Veronika, and it looks like she might also be descended from a Vejrosta, possibly Anton. The bride’s name in the second marriage looks like Kateřina, but I cannot decipher what is written for her. This second bride, Kateřina, is of more interest to us, as she is supposed to be my husband’s great great grandmother, but things don’t quite make sense. But two things do: it looks like her grandfather is Josef Drliček, from Skleny, and those two things, Drliček, from Skleny, are true for our Kateřina. It’s all the other words in between that are a puzzle.
Oh my! Frantisek's oldest daughter Maria married a Konecny. She inherited house 5, and so it changed to that family. We have an 1895 letter from them. VERY gorgeously written, especially by the wife Maria. (He was the local revenue collector, it seems.) I took it to work to scan it, someone saw the script, and commented that it was as beautiful as caligraphy. Kamil translated it for me. I hadn't planned on following the Konecny line back, but now it looks like I must.

Thank you again. Every weekend I have a surprise, it seems.

Hello. I'm taking a break from helping friends with their genealogy to work on my husband's line.

His great grandmother was Josefa Bednař. Her birth record is in Signatura Dolní Loučky, 15513, image 56, house 5 (link follows). The records for her 3 siblings have the same information. Images 39, 47, 53. I transcribe her father as František Bednař, and her mother as Maria Kovařík, who appears to be from Deblín.

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/5373/?strana=56

The marriage record for František Bednař and Maria Kovařík is in Signatura Deblín 1118, image 6, 13 Nov 1849 (link below). I cannot read the parent names for either one of them, except maybe for her father: Josef Kowaryk. From house 130 or 131. Maybe her mother is Františka.

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/3925/?strana=6

František's birth record appears to be in Signatura Dolní Loučky 15512, image 5, 27 Jul 1820, house 5. I suspect his mother is Josefa, but again, I cannot read the names.

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/5371/?strana=5

I don't know if I found Maria's birth record; the candidate is Signatura Deblín 1106, image 90, 4 Mar 1829, and -- House 1, not 130. What are the possibilities that a family would move from House 1 to House 130 within a 20-year timeframe?

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/3920/?strana=90

The family tradition, from more than one source, is that the name was not Kovarik, but Vrzal. Perhaps Maria's mother was widowed early and remarried to a Vrzal. This is why it is important that I have someone who can read the script verify that the name is Kovařík. Do any of these records indicate that Kovařík is deceased?

Thank you.

You are right, I don't know for sure that it's Marianna. I think because they were the only Matej/Matous couple in Hrotovice in the right time period, I theorize it could be Marianna. Oh, to be so lucky for it to be Justina, Magdalena, or something equally distinctive.

As for the accuracy, I've never really run into the dates being that off. Ages, yes. My great great grandfather appeared to be age 40 when he died, but the numbers appear to be off by 10 years. I'll have to look up the records now that they are online and check. As of now, I haven't published his death death on my website because it seems incorrect. So even though Andreas might not have been 78 when he died, that age makes him 26 when he was married, which is reasonable. Or he could have been 24 or 22. I looked that far forward. Or 36, as you say.

A couple of interesting things: 1) After having various Coufal children in the Krhov book in multiple villages, all of a sudden we go for about 15 years without any. I supposed the cousins could have all gotten to the stage where they had houses with teen-agers. But I really expected to see the next generation of children. I'll have to go to the next book. My math might be off by 4 years. :)

The second odd thing: in one of the posts with Kamil Holena, or else an off-line e-mail, we found a record which seemed to be a Coufal, house address and grandparents all matched, but with the last name of Knap. Kamil thought it was an error. I did find an Ondrej/Matej record with the last name of Knap close to the time frame in the Krhov book, a little earlier than expected. The thought occurred to me, to wonder if there were variations on surnames, like the French Canadians with their "dit". That's another post for another day, however.

Thanks.
Mary Levesque

Matěj/Marianna combination - I thought you don´t know the name of Andreas´s mother? I agree that it looks like Catharina is daughter of Matheg Czuffal, which could be Andreas´s father.

As for the year of birth, it´s not unusual that the records are inaccurate - even by ten years in some cases. But I´m sure you know that.

Good luck with your search!

Thank you. Yes, with 250 year old spellings one must make adjustments. For example, my Sramek village is Okresanec, but it shows up as Vokresanec or Wokresanec. So I suppose the "k" was a preposition like "v" was. I did find one birth which could be a sibling of Andreas's, in 1714 in Hrotovice. As expected, there are several Matej/Marianna combinations, but none with an Ondrej or Andreas. The book was Krhov 10554 starting in 1714, and contains the records for several villages, one after the other, not in separate sections. A slight complication. When the book was bound, one of the pages got out of order. I figured that out -- the right side of image 14, left side of image 15, belongs between the two halves of image 10. Even going in the right order, I did not find Andreas/Ondrej. I will keep looking.

Thanks again for the surname spellings.

1749 Dalešice Marriage Record, Coufal - Skula

Continuing on with the Coufal research, I'm hoping to get a transcription/translation of marriage records for Andreas/Ondrej Coufal. Thanks to aksamitnik01 for helping me gather this data. You might want to read this post through to the end before looking up anything, as most of it is not useful, and is included only for documentation purposes.

Also, I need the correct spellings of his wives' maiden names, with diacritical marks.

Andreas's death appears to be 11 Oct 1801. He is age 78, which would put his birth about 1723. Signatura 10187. House 45 in Dalešice.
http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6330/?strana=16

This ties in ok with his first marriage in 1749; he would have been 26. Signatura Dalešice 10178 image 87.
http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6324/?strana=87
Right side, 3rd record

This record is the most significant from a genealogy standpoint, as it lists his father and village, etc. I can guess that he is the legitimate son of the deceased Matej, but I cannot decipher the village. The bride is Mariana, legitimate daughter of Simon Skůla of Dalešice. Or is it Škula? Her birth record is the 5th entry on

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6323/?strana=39

I have looked back through all the birth records in Signatura 10177 for Dalešice, and found only one Coufal. So it looks to me like Andreas married into the family in Dalešice. That's my theory right now, but to narrow down the search, I need to find his home village, and then his birth record.

From the first marriage, I found only two children, both deceased, both girls.
---------------------
On to the second marriage to Barbara. Again, all daughters, early deaths for 5 of the 6. The marriage record:
http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6324/?strana=94

Is her maiden name Koči or Kocza? Or some other variation?

Her birth record, Signatura 10177, image 46, left side, 3rd from bottom:
http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6323/?strana=46

The birth records of the daughters do not give any new info.
I "did the math" and if Barbora died in 1775 at age 42, she might have married Andreas as early as 1751, age 18. But what do I find, but a marriage record for Margaretha Skula on strana 87, 10 Nov 1749.

http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6324/?strana=87

The marriage to Barbara is on strana 94. 19 Sep 1761. So the three marriages were in 1749, 1761, and 1775.

This has been a very productive day, hasn't it. Thanks for your help. I had no idea we would discover so much.

Considering that the next child, the first one of Theresia, was born almost exactly a year later, very likely this is Andreas's first wife. And house 27 ties in with a Coufal. I just have to review my data and see who. Very possibly one of the children from the first family.

Age 42, children were likely for Barbora, and a good reason for Andreas to marry again. One of Theresia's children was named Barbara, strana=76 in the same book, 10 Nov 1782. I have found 6 children so far for Andreas and Theresia. I haven't really looked earlier, but will now.

Thanks so much.

Oh! A dual household, perhaps. I will have to look in the previous book for Andreas and Theresia. I've already looked forward for more of Kaspar, but did not find. My own line has a couple of situations where more than one family was living in the same house.

I will also have to learn how to read Kaspar. I'm a little embarassed about Andreas, however, as there are several in my line.

Thank you very much.

As usual, you give me another new piece of data. (The other marriage.) Thank you so much.

Yes, Frantiska was 18, and Vaclav was young, too. The first baby was born nearly two years after the marriage. They had eleven children in Moravia, and one born in the US in 1878. Vaclav died in an accident in 1888. Frantiska died about 1898, I believe.

Hello, and thanks to everyone who replies to these. The feeling of community is amazing. The help is near priceless.

The record for Wenzel, born Aug 31, house 45, has a father's name I have not had to transcribe yet. The mother is Rozalie. Please tell me what the names are of both of the parents.
Hi Mary. I’m sorry, I had confused it copying preceding record. In Katerina’s birth record as witnesses are listed Johann Wetasl and Katharina his wife. The surname Wetasl is undoubtably misspelled. Correct spelling is Johann Weytasa (Jan Vejtasa) and Katharina (Kateřina née Nemeškal), who got married on February 10 1834.
The text at the bottom of the marriage record is an accordance of the spouse's fathers with the marriage of the underage spouses.
Thank you, Kamil. It has taken me a couple of months to get back to this and sort through things. It looks like I confused Jan and Jun, Apr and Aug. For one of the pathen (sponsors), I thought it was Franz, but you transcribed it as Georg, and that looks right. It seems like the other sponsor was his sister, Katharina (Nemeschkal), so I will be looking for them as siblings of Matheus Votava.

Can we look at Katharina's record again, for the pathen - sponsors? (4th record on left)
http://actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/6695/?strana=71

And is the text at the bottom of this marriage record meaningful to genealogy?
