Moravia (Germ. Maehren) was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, i.e. "Austria" and people of any ethnic group would be "Austrian" by citizenship, so that would be correct for that time. Bohemia (Germ. Boehmen) was also part of the A-H Empire and both these became part of Czechoslovakia c. 1919. Yugoslavia was created, as said, from a group of Balkan Austro-Hungarian states - Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia which are now independent states as Yugoslavia no longer exists. If the person is to be traced, as said again, the most important thing is the language spoken at home, Serb? Croat?, Bosnian? with the religious denomination also being good for a clue. History is very important for Central Europe but sorting out the history is complex and ethnicity is often the best starting point.

The census takers (or their supervisors) did not accurately report where you were born, if it did not politically exist any longer. I have seen entries that said "Moravia" which was crossed out and Austria written over -- in a different hand, so I assume it was a supervisor "correcting" the entry. After 1919, "Czechoslovakia" was written in when the real birthplace was Bohemia. So we can assume that George Fenic was born in the geo-political area that was Yugoslavia's boundaries in 1940.

I once did some research for someone, and his grandmother's birthplace changed every census. Then I looked at history, and it was that little part of Poland that changed hands about 3 times from 1880 to 1920, and it then made sense.

According to http://www.infoplease.com/spot/yugotimeline1.html

the name Yugoslavia started being used in 1929.

Cannot offer any real help but there is a small point which could be important. You say the 1940 census says that George, age 36, was born in Yugoslavia. Quite impossible - Yugoslavia did not exist then. He was probably born somewhere in the Balkan Austro-Hungarian Empire - Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia which came to an end c. 1919. Suggest you Google up Austro-Hungarian Empire which would give you an idea off the size and variety of the nationalities living there. A very important point could be if you know the Language he spoke at home and also his religious denomination. Good luck.

That is what I was thinking too, but I've not run across that in a registry before. If it is, this is quite possible the Frantisek Simic I've been searching for. It makes a great deal of common sense too, as most of the other surnames in the area are the same common surnames that settled together in the same vicinity in US. The village name is Sedlec, near Potvorov and just North of other villages where I've found inter-married families. The time frame for immigration is EXACT. This is highly likely the family I've been seeking.

I have to confirm it by finding the other family members, but it's at least a hurrah for that. Part of the problem is the town in split between different parishes, and one is not yet online.

Much thanks to EVERYONE who help provide me clues to get this far!

Ok, those lead me to here and this script is older and harder for me to read, dating back to 1828. This is what I see...

22 červenec 1828 domu #1 jmeno Frantisek Simica Baba ??? podrodni Anna Subin?? Rohawowa?? ???? #12

Babtizavi Petrus Heinz??

This part under with the priest/scribe's script is what I was most interested in, because it looks to give a date of 19 Mar 1861 with 2 other words before it, can anyone tell me what this is? This could very well be the Frank Simic I've been searching for.

Much thanks, as that appears like it might be the Simic connection to this family. I will have to take a closer look at records in Koryt.

Not qualified for Anna Urbanova, I take it not qualified as Godparent or Baba (midwife). So 1/2 sedlak & pulsedlak are equilivent? Or does that mean 1/2 here and 1/2 in another location? I know this family traveled between Jarov, Vyrov, and Koryt farming, thus the reason for my ?

Thanks again!

Greetings!

I have a couple of records and I'm having trouble reading them, hoping another set of eyes will help. They are mother and son records of birth and I am mostly trying to get the mothers surnames correct. What I (think) can read...

#1 (entry #2) Parents: father - Waclaw Motis Snd?: ???? Janowa, mother - Anna dau of Waclaw S????la ???????? Koritt & mother Barbora (maiden name) B?????ova Koritt; Godparents Mary S?????owa (same surname) & Anton Motis, both ??????? Koritt

#2 Mother: Anna Motisova dau of Waclaw Motisa ?????? Jarow #2 and Anna (maiden name) S????? (Simlana??), cottage Jarow #2, Godfathers Anton Urban 1/2 ?????? Jarow #6 and Anton Motis??? 1/2 ?????? Jarow #22, widwife Anna Urbanowa Jarowa ??????

The surname beginning with S is the same surname in both. Also can't make out what the surname starting with a B is (at least I THINK it is a B). Surname that starts with S is different that that on record (Lumel) so I'm trying to figure out if it's an english version of a Czech name or totally different. Any help appreciated, thank you!

I have plently to fill in elsewhere, just wondering when to come back to the project. Is there anyone notified or anywhere to be watching for when these are released? Thanks!

Dear Chris,
I think the only way to find out the 18th century spelling of Schiruska/Chyruska is to take a look into the parish book of Gradlitz/Choustnikovo Hradiste for this period. The parish books are kept in the Archive in Zamrsk. It was planned to publish them via Internet in 2012. Unfortunately this was not possible. Maybe they will be published later this year or next year. As I am personally interested in the Friebel family I´ll try to keep you informed in this subjekt. Nevertheless I think it is possible that the 20th/21th century spelling in german of the name is Schirutschke. It is the only name that I found in kontext with the region that has real similarity to the searched name.
Kind regards, rud_olf

Zlatica has listed a few possibilities, and there are numerous others. There are also addition surnames from the same (or nearby) village, going TO Isaco,MO(and nearby towns) in different years., all potential clues.

TOM

Yes, she died so young and of course I never knew her. The only picture I have found of her is of her and my dad in 1922 at Ellis Island. On ancestry.com I have found her dad may have been John Kocsis or Kochis but the only document I found about her mother was her death certificate saying her mother's maiden name was Mary Knee but John Kochis married Anna. Dead end.

Thank you for the pic of grampa! Yes thats him in the back!! He worked at the cement factory in Ilasco MO and never remarried, died in 1978.

My guess is that their hometown in the Old Country was Jasov,a large village about a dozen miles west of the city of Kos'ice in today's southeastern Slovakia. Until 1950, there was a separate adjacent smaller village called Jasovsky Podzamok, which seems a match for the "Podzamidz" reported as their place of birth.

They came from 1922's Czechoslovakia, but they were not from the area of today's Czech Republic. The arrival record says Zusanna identified herself and her children as Slovak. She even gives her husband's name in its Magyar/Hungarian form, Janos. It also mentions the locations "Jasa," "Ilassa" (probably the same place), and "Podzamidz." I have not been able immeidately to identify those placea.

The surname spelling Kockis does not occur in Slovakia. Perhaps it was Kocsis, the Magyar spelling for what today would be Koc'is, pronounced "KOH-chees," which means coachman.

Tony,

Oh my gosh.....how did you find this?? Ella is my grandfather's first wife but we have not been able to find any information on her anywhere. Do you know where I can find any?? My mother never knew her father was married previous and this has been a shock to her - she found this out a few weeks ago. My mother just turned 70 years old and never knew of her. Just trying to find out a bit more.

Thank you so much for that little bit!!
Leigh
