STRUTHERS - Funeral services for Mary Elash, 90, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at the Christ Our Savior Church at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, both in Struthers, Ohio.
Mary Elash was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Czechoslovakia, a daughter of Andrew and Veronica Hvisdak and came to Struthers, Ohio as a child in 1929.
She was an active member of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, from its original location on Washington Street to its present location.
Her church activities included being a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, and as a pirohy worker for many years.
Mary was also a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, and the Jednota Branch No. 156.
She attended Struthers High School, and as a young woman, was a Sales Associate at G.M. McKelvey Company for a number of years.
Mary Elashwas well known for her baking, especially, kolachy, apple pies, and many Slovak traditional dishes. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family,
Mary was especially proud of the educational achievements of her three children, all of whom obtained college post graduate degrees.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her three children, Georgia (John) Barkett of Boardman, Ohio, Raymond (Janine) Elash of Dayton, Ohio and Barb (Eric) Furst of Bay Village, Ohio; two grandsons, Brent (Lisa) Barkett of Cincinnati, Ohio and Alex Furst; her sister, Dorothy Kisak of Struthers, Ohio; she also leaves several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Elash; an infant daughter, Sylvia; her parents; and her two brothers, Joseph and Andrew Hvisdak.
Friends may call Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home Inc., 258 Poland Ave. in Struthers, Ohio.
Interment will be at St. John’s Cemetery.
