l am trying to find what happened to this man
Count Von Lomnitz
My Grandmother helped him escape, during the war.& she is near to dying.
My Mother is writing her memoirs, She is asking her Mother about the War...this conversation was in 1955.
My Mother and Grandmother came to Australia in 1949.
and she includes this passage below.
Mother________
Where did you go after the war was over?
Grandmother_______
I went to the Steiermark. That’s where my grandfather lived. I was lucky to find transport
out of Prague. We had to find our own way.
Prague was where I bleached my hair.
I sold my fur coat to pay for a lift.
Everything was in chaos, everyone was afraid of the Russians, they were very close.
Mother
How long did you stay in the Steiermark? Were you there until you came for me in Kohlgrub?
I didn’t know you were in Prague.
That’s in Czechoslovakia, isn’t it? Is that where you learned that song? The one that goes;
handgnam sassa zeist du neide…?
Granmother
Yes. I am surprised you remember that.
It was in Prague that I helped the Count of
Lomnitz escape with his art treasures, too.
I managed to get him a pass and enough space
on a railway carriage for his possessions.
I often wondered what happened to him and
where he went, he was a very nice man.
Mother
How did you do that?
Grandmother
I knew the right people.
I got him the papers and then I rode through the street in his open car with him, so no one could stop him and ask questions, they would not have dared.
Mother
And you never heard from him again?
Grandmother
No. Of course not. I think he would have left Europe. Maybe he went to America. The property he owned would
have been lost to the Russians.
But I do sometimes wonder if he ever thought of me, wherever he went.
Mother
He didn’t give you a reward?
Grandmother
Goodness no. All he would have had to give me was a painting. What would I do with that?
Mother
Yes, I can just imagine you with a huge gilt framed portrait of some Lomnitz ancestor after the war,
wondering what you were going to do with it…

So for the sake of my Grandmothers thoughts, l am now
trying to find, if anyone knew or knows of this mans excistance, and what became of him.
Any replies will be gratefully accepted.
