I am looking for information about Symeon Dahoda aka Samuel Dahoda. Also Olena/Helena Haszczyc. One or both are from Galicia area. They both left their homes and emigrated to the USA. They both lived in Cohoes, NY. I am not sure if they knew each other before coming to Cohoes, NY.

They belonged to St. Nicholas Church - it is an Orthodox Church.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Sandy Dahoda

I'm trying to find out some information about my great grandfather, Alter Thau. His listed residence on the Hamburg passenger list is Banilla. I can't find any information on a place called Banilla. Is it because the document is written in german? Does the place still exist?

I am researching the family of John Bielik born June 1852 Poland/Austria and wife Kate born November 1856 Poland/Austria. they had sons Jacob born May 1879 & Alex born July 1882 Poland/Austria before coming to Amercia in 1882.They were married about 1895 which tells me either they weren't married before their sons were born or John's first wife passed away and he took a second wife whom was named Kate. They went on to have sons: Michael born September 1884, Paul born January 1885, Frank born December 1890, James born June 1892, Joseph born July 1895, Henry born March 1898, Josephine born March 1899 & Paul John Bielik/Bialik born January 1886 all were born in Michigan, U.S.A..If you can help in our search of these family roots of Poland/Austria We would really appreciate it.

JOSEPH STINE - AUSTRIA

This is my husband's great grandfather. According to my husband's father, he left Austria with his wife around 1900. He settled in Chile (South America) and there they made a life for themselves. However, he rarely spoke of Austria. We know he had two sons --Bruno (dob 1919) and Tito Carvacho-- but we don't know if there were any other children. We know that Tito Carvacho married and had 2 or 3 children. Bruno went to marry Ana Llovet and they had 3 children (Bruno Jose, Victor and Gloria).
Sadly, this is all the information we have and nothing about his past in Austria. We will post more as and when. If anybody has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a ggrandfather, whose name was Anthony Trzeciak. His wife's name was Julia. They had 6 boys and 2 girls. I know that my ggrandfather came over here from Poland some time in the early 1900's. They settled in the Pittsburg area. My grandfather changed the last name to Tretchick. He died when my father was 12, so we have no info about his family. Do any of these names sound familiar: Mike, Frank, Joseph, Chuck, Johnny, Tony, Estell, and Sophia. These would have been my grandfather's siblings. Anxious to hear about them if anyone recognizes these names.

She arrived on Oct 20 1909 on the ship Ryndam and was detained on Ellis Island for at least 3 days. The Ellis Island website search engine lists her as Kunia Pyren. The Ancestry website interpreted the same manifest handwriting as Ksenia Syren.

She had listed her birth place as " Sawak, Austria ", but I can find no such place. Her ethnicity is listed as Ruthenian. Apparently all her relatives had died, as she lists "no one" as relatives remaining in her home country. Her final destination in the USA was listed as: John Makara, Olden St., Nanticoke PA. She had listed him as her brother in law. I have found John Makara in Braddock district of Pennsylvania, but I am unsure if this is the same/correct John Makara, as I don't know Ksenia's sister's name.

Ksenia may have changed her name to Sonia when she arrived in USA. I really know nothing more about this young lady except what was listed on the ship manifest and detainment records. Finding her birth town would really help my investigation!

Thanks!

Hello, all. I am researching my grandfather (Hrycko Humen), who died many years ago. I don't know that much about him, but was able to gather from his Ellis Island's ship's manifest that emigrated from from Knieza, Austria in 1909.

I've googled this town and searched the ShtelSeeker, but haven't been able (as far as I can tell) to find anything about it. I realize it may now be a part of another country (my grandmother was Carpatho-Rusyn, so I don't know if this was the case for my grandfather was well) but I thought it was worth trying here at least to see if anyone can provide any information.

Thanks so much in advance for the help!

Joyce

Hello,

I am looking for information on the Fukalla family from Steiman, Austria ( Bohemia?). My Grandfather came to America in 1907 at the age of 9 years old with his mother, brother and sister. They met up with his father Frank Fukalla in Bay City, Michigan. Grandpa's name was Alois in Austria (Bohemia) and changed to Louis here in America. Frank also had a half brother named Josph Desher ( I am not sure of the spelling as the census was hard to read.) I am also looking for Louis's mothers family I know how the say the last name but I am not sure how it is spelt. It sounds like: Was-he-sick of Was-sea-sick. Her name was Theresa and I know that she left her parents and I think five sisters there in Austria ( Bohemia) maybe also a brother. Any information is appreicated.

Thank you,
Linnea Hyder

My father's name is Adolf (aka Adi) Hollaus. They lived in Traisen, Austria. One of my Dad's cousins was Rupert Hollaus, who was a 125CC (motorcycle) World Champion in 1954. There is a statue in his honor placed in Traisen (he was killed racing). Have never been able to find out anything on the history of our name, and would be very appreciative if anyone knows any of my relatives or history. Thank you! :)
Molke, Staroski- assistance please!

After numerous months I've finally uncovered information on a name change that occurred in my family. Here's what I have and am desperately seeking assistance with:

Earl Edward Molke (b- 1890 Yonkers, NY but I think he was born overseas as Yonkers city hall has no record- later changed his last name to Miller)married Marie Starosky ( b-1891 Passiac NJ).

Molke parents are Katie/Catherine Carter (b-abt 1861) of Austria and Charles Molke of Germany.

Starosky parents are John Starosky of Austria and Mary Mathews of Austria.

I can't find ANY info on any of these folks coming over from Germany or Austria, and I have no idea what towns in Germany or Austria they may have been from. I also can't find Earl Edward or Marie anytime prior to the 1920 census records.

Does anyone have any magical search tools they can help me out with?? I'm totally stumped on this one.

Please email me at debbie_miller@cox.net
Thanks for the assistance!

(Cross-posting in Austria and Germany boards)

help with Harrach birth/death records in Breslau Germany

My great grandfather was George Harrach born in Breslau Germany, his father was Peter who lived in Breslau, and his father was Count Johann Karl Harrach (or Count Karl Harrach) who also had a brother Maximilian (plus 7 other siblings). And their father was Karl I, Count Harrach-Rohrau-Purchtenstein. Our problem is that we can't find any records saying that Count Johann Karl Harrach (or Count Karl Harrach) had any children AT ALL. Some records show that he died in the 30 years war with his brother-both were officers in the Knight's academy in Gitschin-in the armies of Wallenstein. How can we track down records that will help us?

Research in Glina, Croatia for Gjuro Stambolija

I am traveling to Austria and Glina, Croatia this April. My main reason for going is to help my great aunt who is unable to travel, including visiting the town where her father grew up. She has always wanted to know more about her father’s family.

I have enjoyed reading the Croatia-in-English site and Robert Jerin’s pages and used the information to plan my trip; also wrote a letter to the local Orthodox Church and printed the relevant phone book pages.

My question is- what else might I do before going, as I have only four days to stay in Glina? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The information I have for George Stambol/ Gjuro Stambolija: he was born about May 1889. He had a postcard of Glina and told his children that that was where he was born.
The ships manifest has his birthplace as Neldjissi, last residence Jukinac, joining his friend, F/Tihola Stambolya in Allegheny. He lived in McKees Rocks.
His parents are Daniel/ Danijel Stambolija and Mildred/ Mila BALTIĆ. He belonged to the Orthodox Church.
Christopher immigrated to America as did his brothers Baptiste and John. My ancestors have been living in Trentino, Alto Adige (Italy) for more than 150 years. By the time my grandfather was born that territory was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. He then became Italian at the end of First World War I. I still have some family there. I would like to know if there may be a possible link between the two countries. I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Thanks in advanced!
Gustavo Mascher!
Gustavo Mascher

I look for my father's Petro Babka relatives in Indija Serbia, the brothers of his grandfather Petro Babka as well went to Yugoslavis in the beginning of the XX century. My grandfather Ivan Babka was invited to visit them, but it was USSR and he coildn't go. But my parent lately visited them the last were not glad to see the relatives from USSR, bit we know there are some relatives(my father's sister in Indija Serbia her surname is Hanna Serbai she had daughter and the son living now in Austria his name is Serbai too). One more my father brother and sister(Hannas too)lived in Zagreb Croatria we are eager to find them too. So my father believe may be she(or her children or other relatives) is eager to see him nowand to visit native places. There is no Jugoslavia and no USSR any more!

I have brother who will visit Wien Vienna in late April 2008 and we want to make the most of his visit to do genealogy research. Our great grand father Dr. Eduard von Waldau was an officer/doctor in the Austrian Army, so, one place on the list would be the Kriegsarchiv in Wien. What can we expect as far as help, cooperation and expenses? Can anyone give suggestions to assist in making the most of the visit?

I think I found my husband's grandmother but it is difficult to decipher. Her name listed is Antonia Forstner and arrived 9/19/1913. She is LINE 19. Here are my questions. Am I reading it right that it shows her as "married"? It also has written "sister" Also, LINE 18- Maria Weistinjer is this Antonia's sister? We were told his grandmother's name was "Weisinger" so it appears that would be her sister. Where it asks for nearest relative it also shows Maria Weistinjer but I cannot make out the town. I have searched LDS and Ancestry for Weistinjer but that name does not show at all. Can anyone help.

All I know about him is that his mother's name was Agatha, and his wife's name was Rosina Wolfsteiner, they were married 8-22-1888. Anton & Rosa left Brememhaven, Germany in 1900 with 4 children Anna, Ludwig, walburga, and Eleanora and sailed to New York, eventually settling in St. Louis, Missouri. Census records indicate he was a candle maker, and family stories say that he invented a bleaching technique. Can anyone help with any information?
I am trying to find a Harry Yachter that left Austria about 1899 for the U.S. at about age 11. I cannot seem to find any information on him at Ellis Island and am fairly certain there was a name change. If anyone can help point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Perhaps some suggestive alternative spellings or if there is an immigration index maintained by the austrian government. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
HEllo my name is Jeniffer Baker/Ovatt. I have posted a few threads about my slovak Roots.. I just wanted to update anyone who is helping me research my family line. OVATT. Slovak family.. I found our yesterday that my Great grandfather John Ovat was a Steriage, or crew member on a few ships before he actually seTtled in the US. I have been looking for Ship Crew Lists Between 1890-1906. I know for sure he was settled in the US by 1906. So I believe he worked on the ships a few years until he made enough money to bring his wife Mary gemer/Jamer/Gamel? to the us and settle here. If anyone knows of any links to Crew Members of Ships between 1890-1906. I do not know what year or ship He worked on, but I know that John OVatt/Ovat was his name but Is was spelled european like Janos, or jan, ect. So I dont know the exact spelling.. I just need some help looking for Crew members Records for all Parts of the Eastern and Southern part of the US... Please let me know.. Thanks all you fellow Family Researchers!! Here is a copy of my past threads.. and family info...

(past Threads)

Hello my name is Jeniffer (Ovatt) Baker.. . My family came from the
Slovakia, Austrian Hungarian empire.. We dont have any immigration
information yet. All we know Is that My great great grandparents came
here to america areound 1900-1905. We know that they were supposedly
born in Austria, but everyone I have spoken too from their community in
Brookside, Warrior area of Alabama, they said they always were told they
were SLOVAK?? I need some help with my research I have access to many
websites,including a paid subscription to Ancestry.com, I have been at a
Brick Road with my family for about 4 years... I have found no census
record or any immigration.. I live in California and they lived in
Alabama from 1906 until their deaths.. I know that I have found many
typos in my family last name. OVAT. OVATT. Ovath. ect.. just to let you
know... Oh.. I know all the men in the family were Coal miners in
Kentucky and maybe other unknown states?? My main goal is to fnd
immigration and naturalization for my family... I need all the help I
can get.. have researched every website.. for years and anything you
find is all the information I have put online.. No other Ovatt's
exsist..Or it seems that way....
The Ovat/Ovatt's settled in Republic, Warrior, and Brookside areas of
Jefferson County, Alabama.
John and Mary are Buried at a
Catholic church in Brookside Alabama called St. Micheals.. They are
buried in
the part of the cemetary where the Slovensky familiy is Buried...
Researching Supan (or Suppan or Zupan) or Holecheck (or Holecek, Holecsek)

I am researching the Ancestry of my great-grandparents who emigrated from the Austria-Hungary Empire around 1890 and whom I believe to be of Slovenian Origin. We have no family documents so there is little information about where they came from in their native origins. I hope you can help me.

John Supan (or Suppan or Zupan)
Birth:	26 Dec 1860
Place: Studenzen Austria (or Slovenia)
Citizenship: 5 June 1900
Place:	Marshall County WV
Death:	16 Dec 1902
Place:	Moundsville, Marshall County WV
Burial:	Dec 1902
Place:	Moundsville, Marshall Co, WV,
Occupation: Coal Miner
Emigration: Immigrated 1890 at age 30
Parents: George Supan (or Suppan) and Christina Skandley (or Skander and Skender)

Emigrated with Children: Christina (b.1884); Max (b. 1886-Budapest) and Mary (b. 1890)

Wife:
Louise Helen Holecheck (or Holecek, Holecsek and Holleczeg)
Birth:	1864	Place: Graz Austria
Death:	1947	Place: Moundsville, WV
Burial:	1947	Place Moundsville, Marshall Co, WV,
Occupation:Homemaker
Parents:	Matthew (or John) and Maria Holecheck

Additionally I believe John may have had a sibling named Joseph Supan and wife Catherine who emigrated around 1888. He was born in 1854; they came to US with Children - Joseph (b. 1883) and Anthony (b. 1886).
Finding Family
Hello, my name is Mindy Ellis

I am looking for information about Harry Weinstein or his family. Harry was born in England in 1902. Some time after that he lived toToronto. Harry was the son of Ysak and Annie Weinstein (nee Winstok). In 1947 Harry used the occupation as a Furrier. He later owned his own band and played the violin. Harry married Ada Sherotsky (name changed to Sherrick) and they had two children – Marcus Emanual and Ruth. Harry left his wife and children about 1932 and settled in New South Wales. It was thought that he bought a Sydney hotel and lived in Coogee. He later remarried and had two more children, a boy and a girl, I think. I would like to contact Harry Weinstein’s children or grandchildren. Harry could have changed his name to Winston. I would be a granddaughter to Harry Weinstein. I would appreciate any information that you could relay to me.

I can be contacted by the following.

Mindy Ellis
4154 Gardner
Berkley, Michigan 48072-1482
USA

Telephone number: 248.280.1529
Fax number: 248.280.1299
E-mail address: Mimiaunt@aol.com
I recently bought a carte de visite photo (circa 1865)identified as Georg Gusenleithner. It was taken by Carl Herberth, Photograph, Wien, Wieden, Mayerhofgasse, No. 363.

There is a street in Vienna named for Georg Gusenleightner, the mayor of Penzing, in 1907. This is a beautiful photo of George with his hat in his hand. He has dark hair and is wearing plaid pants, a dark vest, jacket, and a tie. He also has a watch chain hanging from the vest pocket.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this wonderful family photo. Put Gusenleightner photo in the subject line.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

I have two different spellings of cities which are supposed to be in Austria/Bohemia Taken from two different death certificates, one my great grandmother and the other her sister. One spelled the city of their birth as MILHOUSEN and the other was spelled MUHLHAUSEN. I found a web site which stated one of these was about 30 or 40 miles from Prague, but i didn't bookmark the site! and can not locate anything like that is the area that was mentioned.
Kluk from Lemberg

Hi I am trying to trace my husbands family and my german is non-existent so please bear with me while I trying to decipher this.

My father in-law was a Marion (Marjon) Kluk was born in Lemberg in 1914 and unfortunately passed away in 1960s

Our only details that I know about him is that was another brother that I am sure but think that there maybe a third or possibly a fourth. Besides Marion there was also a Franciszeki (Frank) born in 1912. The third brother may have been a Thadeous (Thomas) and that their mother had died in Vienna.

Marion and Frank later immigrated to South Australia in 1949.

Marion's personal life is a little complicated as their is one daughter (born c 1943) from a previous marriage and I think lives in Poland. There is also son Robert (born c 1945)and I don't know if this was from a marriage or a relationship. His later remarried Ingeborg Ursula Schon in Vienna just before coming out to Australia.

Any help in trying to complete this meagre tree would be greatly appreciated and I am willing to share any information that I have.

AUSTRIAN Wars

Looking for data on the Austian-Cashut war. Ancestor Joseph Tomas Tolmich, Talmach, Talmadge served in this war prior to emigrating to the US, to Colorado, about 1849. I cannot find the name Cashut anywhere on the web. It appears this war would have been prior to 1849, the approx. date of his emigration.
Joseph has many medals on his coat in photos but so faint (but not small) we can't recognize where they are from. He also served in the Civil War from New Mexico so some of them may be from that war. Are there any identifying marks on Austria's medals that would help me? I have seen several of the tri-fold medals for various services accomplished but they don't look like the ones in our photos. Right side of coat shows writing above top of medal and below that horizontal bar with sides coming down into a point.

There are other medals beneath that and an emblem beneath the medal that looks like a very elongated bell.

On the left side of the coat are 2 rather large stars, one beneath the other.

If anyone has a link on the web to the ships that left Turkey or Austria abt 1849, that would be great.

If you have heard of this war or know anything at all about these medals or the Cashut conflict, or these surnames, please email me.

My TOLMICH data is not at my web site yet but check back soon.

So please reply back in english. You can e-mail me at lontif@hotmail.com
Thank you so very much for any information. My great grandfather was named Anton (Tony) Degelman and was born in 1879 in Austria. That is all I know. If this is any help please let me know

I am searching for ancestors of Heinrich Lerchbacher (1922-1983) and Herlinde Possler/Poessler (1932-1969). Heinrich's parents were Heinrich Lewin and Rosa Lerchbacher (they adopted her name due to the anti-semitic feelings in Europe at the time). Rosa's parentage is a complete mystery - my father believes she was the illegitmate daughter of a farm girl and a farmer (Grasser). All we know for sure, is she was raised by the Grassers on their farm after her mother left.

Any information is appreciated! Rose

European Records Help!

I have traced ancestors (Anton Ribic married Agnes Domnick, had child Johann Ribic, who I found immigration records of) back to present-day Slovenia, around the town of Ptuj, I believe. Is there a site to go to that allows you to research slovenian archieves? Or is there a name database for this part of Europe?
Does anyone have advice as how to further my search from here in the states?

Surnames are Ribic and Unetic. Thanks in advance for any help!

-Zach

prozach100@hotmail.com

Help locating a town or province?

Hello, I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. My great grandfather was born in Austria (his last name was Hartig). He came to America when he was young (about when he was 9). I'm having a hard time trying to pinpoint where he came from.

On his WWI Registration card, it says he was born in "Bohemia; Austria." Now, on his WWII Registration card, it says he was born in "Grotta, Austria." And to add to the confusion, my grandma says he was born in Spittal an der Drau.

So, I'm a bit lost. I can't find a Grotta in present day Austria, though there are several Grotta's in Northern Italy that may have been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when he was born (which was 1887). However, the Bohemia thing is throwing me for a loop. What part of the country did Bohemia encompass? I get the impression it was mainly in northern Austria and the Czech Republic. However, all my other references point to the fact that he was either born in southern Austria or present day Italy. Anyway, any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Neusser from Seitendorf

I'm looking for any information on Josef Neusser from Seitendorf, Maehren, Austria-Hungary. I believe he was married to Theresia Blaschke and his son, Georg Neusser, was born in 1845 in Seitendorf and emigrated to the US, settling in Victoria, Texas. The name was later modified to Neisser, I'm guessing when Georg came to the States.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Robin

As an extension of the Botts/Walls family tree we are looking specifically for any information on John Weinzerl and family. When did they migrate to the U.S. and at what port, on what ship. John was only 16 when he fought in the Civil War. He was born Sept. 22, 1844. Any information would be helpful.

Grette family from Austria..one of them born in Zara, Austria

I am researching my husband's family...his grandfather, grandmother and aunt came from Austria. His fathers name was Joseph Grette born March 12 1871 in Austria according to his death cert. I find him in Oregon census starting in 1910 along with his wife and oldest child. I cannot find any records on his entry to this country or where he went when he got here. His son remembers him talking about being in the great quake in San Francisco in 1906 but I find not records of him, his wife or child. His wife's maiden name was Mary Delida Strumavitch, born 4 March 1885, Zara. Austria according to her death cert. Oldest daughter, Angeline Grette, born 15 Aug 1904 in Austia. Through the years one of the daughters changed the Grette name to Gretty and the rest of the kids went by Gretty. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thanks..Linda
