Equally intriguing is that I thought the city could also be Pernartitz in German which would be Bernartice, CZ only a dozen or so km from Pertoltice that you suggested... meaning that I am very likely in the correct area!

Thanks again!

Thank you so much! I had looked at that list on Wiki, but OBVIOUSLY I needed to look in the German since that is what the Hamburg passenger list was in!!! The cities in the English version were, in fact, spelled slightly differently.

Also, apologies... I knew Sklabina was now in Slovakia... I was trying to multitask while writing the post and messed up. My gr grandfather indicated it was in Hungary since at the time of his birth since at it was the Austro-Hungarian empire.

The explanation of the surname variance is great. I appreciate it so much... International genealogy makes me feel like a beginner all over again. Especially when tracking Norwegian and Swedish ancestors and then switching to Bohemian...

Thank you for you fast response. I am so grateful that I with your help I can finally track this unknown part of my family!

Fuchs of Grossschönau, Austria

Hello,

I am trying to find any information someone might have on a FUCHS family from Grossschönau, Austria. One of my wife's ancestors, Johan FUCHS, was born there on February 26, 1912. He left Austria after the Anschluss and was in Nicaragua by 1939. In Nicaragua he was known as Juan FUCHS HOLL. Because of Nicaraguan naming conventions, this means Johan/Juans mother's maiden name was HOLL.

If it is of any help, Johan/Juan's father was a master painter of background sceneries for the theater in Austria. Johan/Juan was a painter in Nicaragua. Also, Johan/Juan's family was supposedly of Tyrolean extraction.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can share any information on Johan FUCHS/Juan FUCHS HOLL's family.

Perthaltitz, Österreich in 1896?

I have seen many other people with similar problems
(village names that now longer exist) that have been solved and I am hoping someone can help me...

My gr gr grandmother departed from Hamburg, Germany on 27 May 1896 on the Albano. The Hamburg passenger list says that her residence was Perthaltitz, Österreich. I have scrutinized the handwriting and I agree with the transcriber was correct in his or her assessment of the spelling. If it helps I think this is likely now a part of Bohemia, since most subsequent census documents indicate the country of for my ancestor's birth to be Bohemia, Czech, or Austria. It says the native language is Czech- and that is what I understand my origins to be- specifically Bohemia.

I would be MOST appreciative of any help. I only know the origins for one other ancestor of Czech origins being Sklabina... now in Hungary. It would be so exciting to get that much closer. Also the surname in its various permutations is Vorlicka, Vorlicky, Vorlicek, or Vorlisky if that helps at all.

I am debating purchasing an 1896 map of Austria to see if I can track it down too.

Many thanks in advance!

Is it possible for you to provide a wider view of the document? In 1885 I would think that the German name of the village/town was used if your ancestor was coming from Bohemia with a German name as KRATZER.
try www.ihff.at (gazetteer) suggests for Nyra _ Nyrany, Bohemia/Czech Republic whose old German name was Nurschau
Any other US document like SS-5Form or naturalization intent and petition?
Kratzer, Mindel Neusandez 9 1898 1907
Kratzer, Rosa Neusandez 45 1862 1907
Kratzer, Schoel Neusandez 15 1892 1907
Neu Sandez is Nowy Sacz, Poland
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowy_S%C4%85cz

Mohnbauerin - This is a definite possibility after looking at the links you provided. The individual in question was born in 1860 and always reported his place of birth and his parents' places of birth as Austria (up until his death in 1933). This passenger list is the only record I have found that provides a more specific place of origin. His name was Joseph Kratzer and parents listed on his death certificate are Morris Kratzer and Rachel Cohen. Maybe I will have some luck with local records. Thanks!

Trying to figure out the place of origin for my ancestor that arrived on the Schiedam in New York on 4 Nov 1885. The port of departure was Amsterdam, but it lists his origin as "Ostria" and then a word that appears to be "Nyrandiz" (both visually, as how the passenger list has been indexed).

I've looked but it doesn't seem to me like Nyrandiz is a place. I've attached the snippet from the passenger list.

All other documents that I have indicate that he came from Austria.

Any suggestions?

in Austria we learn english at school, so you can write in your language.
write to the 2 cemetries and also to the general administrations-office of all cemetries in Vienna and ask them if they can give you all they have to the persons as you are making ancestors-research. also would be important to get the last adress they lived (if they have), so it would be easier to find the parish-church, where you can find the church-book-entries. before 1938 you must look there, dates after 1938 you must look at Standesamt in the district the person lived. also very important would be at birth-dates in Vienna if they would have also the parish-church or the district. just being buried at Zentral-Friedhof it´s not easy to know where are they belonged.
http://www.wien-konkret.at/soziales/friedhof/
more on end of page at "Verwaltung: Friedhöfe Wien GmbH"
the special cemetries (Friedhöfe):
http://www.wien.gv.at/kultur/friedhoefe/orte/baumgarten.html
http://www.wien.gv.at/kultur/friedhoefe/orte/zentralfriedhof...

for the Friedhof Baumgarten you have not so much churches to ask. so in any case make attempt to go in contact with them. cemetry Baumgarten is in the 14th district Penzing:
http://stephanscom.at/pfarren/dekanate/Stadtdekanat_14
for first ask at the churches Penzing, Hütteldorf and Breitensee. this are the more bigger churches there. i know, as i lived as child 6 years in this district. my grandparents and the families of her sisters also buried at Baumgarten. as example our church next we lived was Penzing. but for you also others can be possible. maybe one of them has Hermann Schollum in the files. in fact because of burials after 1952 you may ask for first at Standesamt Hietzing as it is competent for the districts 13,14,15,23.
think there you must get in any case more details.i hope...
http://www.wien.gv.at/advuew/internet/AdvPrSrv.asp?Layout=st...
all other Standesämter of Vienna:
http://www.wien.gv.at/advuew/internet/AdvPrSrv.asp?Layout=st...
all Vienna parish-churches and Dekanate (to find at Vikariat Wien-Stadt/Vikariat Vienna-city):
http://stephanscom.at/pfarren/
it fits nearly with the Vienna-districts:
http://www.wien.gv.at/bezirke/

hope this helps.

Hi Many thanks for taking the time to report this information to me, and the infomation about Prof Robert Schollum (although I diddn't know his middle name)-- I met him when he came out to New Zealand, back around 1974 or '76.
I knew about Prof Robert Schollum and his parents (Simon and Josephine (although my records had her dying in 1945, not 1955), )and I was told about her parents Josepha and Richard Stastny)) and Robert's two brothers (Richard and Walter) who died young,
but I was unaware of the following family members buried at Baumgarten:

Schollum Antonia 09.05.1973 Baumgarten in same grave with
Grabner Amalia, Grabner Anton, Grabner Berta ,Schollum Antonia, Schollum Hermann
Schollum Antonia 25.02.1952 Baumgarten
Schollum Hermann 02.10.1985 Baumgarten

I have no oidea which family line they are descended from, so you have presented me with a challenge!!
Do you know whether or not the death records of Hermann Schollum would record who his parents were, and also his age at the time of death, as well as the place of birth?
I do not read German, so will have difficulty with the records; also Vienna is a long way from New Zealand, so I cannot make a quick trip to visit!!
any help you can offer is much appreciated
Regards
Stephen Schollum
s.schollum@clear.net.nz

My great grandfather was Charles Henry Nobert, married to Emilie Martel daughter of Benjamin Martel and Philomene Leblond. I have been able to trace the Martel line, but no Nobert line. At least none that I can connect to. I think Charles Henry must have died sometime between 1905 (when Emilie died) and 1910 because I find no record of him beyond the 1900 US Census. He is listed as Honore Nobert on Emilie's death certificate. Could be a typo, could be correct. They had two sons that I remember. Herman was married to Rela, and Joseph was married to Charlotte. Then there were the girls, Eva (married to Joseph Arthur Roy - 6 children), Alice (Married to George Cropper - no children) and Lorraine (Married to Joseph Lavergne - 2 sons). Does anyone have a connection?

Hi Robert - I understand that with a lot of thanks to you I now have a better handle on my grandmother "Kasiminska, Helena". I also understand that you might be able to post to me the manifest!!

As well I am told I can ask you more questions: So here goes:
1. If Helena and Michael were married prior to Helena coming over, as it now appears, then is there a way for you to find out their marriage date, place?
2. For Michael is it possible for you to find out the same information that you found out for Helena e.g., manifest.
3. Is it possible for you to get birth information for both of them?
4. Is it possible for you to find out their parents names, birth info and possible the type of work they did?

I ran into a bit of a problem with Ancestory.com as it offered a 14 day free trial but asked for a credit card number which I ended up having to call for help in putting in. Was told the charge would be $84. Then when I went on after that I was told I owed $299 that day. I put my card information in again and within 5 minutes got a call from the Mastercard Fraud people who wanted to know if I gave my card number of someone within the last few minute. I told them I did. I got worried after that and sent a note to Ancestry.com to cancel my thing. I have never done this before and I was scared of what would happen with my card. I am not sure of the sites I have been into and my husband had to clean our computer because of something called a virsus.

Anyway, I do know that they had a daugher in 1908 Sophia born Apr 30, 1908 in Hammond, Indiana.

How would I find marriage information on them in the USA or can you help with that? I don't want to abuse this search stuff. I do appreciate your help.

You're welcome.
I am aware that you do not know where they were born in "old" Austria only Galicia but you need to find their place of birth among their US documents. You can not go over the big water with the research without finding their place of birth in US or Canada.

Hi Janet

Rak, Helena Rzrajcska, Galicy 16 1890 1906 If this is your ancestor than they married in US or Canada.
Only 3 people arrived from this village, so obvious to me, the village is transcribed incorrectly.
SKI ending is Polish
Have you posted on Canada's Ancestry and Genforum?

Janet

Did you look on Helena RAK's manifest? Please do and tell me what letters you see in the name of a village.
Can it be Baryczka? I did find RAK and TELESZ in Baryczka's phone book. I know that is not any kind of proof that this is your ancestral village. Your RAK ancestor and TELESZs were the only 3 from Rzrajcska.
Do you know if Helen and Michael were naturalized US citizen?
