Only a guess but Presburg (Pressburg plus other Slovakian spellings) springs to mind - google Pressburg to see. Nowadays Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. If you could scan in the document which bears what you think is Presbit it might be easier for other suggestions to be made.

Hi,
I was hoping you could help me translate my Great Grandfather's Brother in law's name. My grandfather's name is Johann Gorkiewicz #24 of the passenger list and it is marked that Olcha Borskiweicz (sp?) is #25. Can you help me with the correct spelling and what might Olcha be changed to a more anglicized name? Here is the link address to the passenger manifest.
Cheers,
Sasha Gurkweitz

http://interactive.ancestry.com/7488/NYT715_1301-0966/400609...
I am fairly certain that Alexander and Rosa Lederer of Lackenbach, Austria (then was probably Lacompac) were the parents of Elisabeth (Elsa?) Lederer, who married David Geller of Poland. Elisabeth and David then had three children: Charlotte (born in 1924, now living in the US), Gottfried (deceased) and Hella (deceased). The latter two children died in the Shoah after being deported with their family from Wien / Vienna to Riga, Latvia.

Hello and thank you so much for replying to my post.

Yes, Harriet was his 2nd wife (marriage took place after they were living together). We did get the marriage cert, but it didn't give us much to work on, other than birthplace Vienna.

What puzzles me is:

1) Why I can't find any record of JB senior's death (as Harriet was listed as widow in 1901)?

2) Why wasn't JB junior on the earlier census (presumably in Vienna until some time between 1891 and 1901?

3) I often wonder why JB senior came to the UK and when? Would he have spoken English (given that he was living/married to Harriet - English)?

So many questions and I don't seem to be getting anywhere finding any answers! :)
In the 1901 census, Joseph Jr. (born about 1881) is living at home with Harriet, his mother noted as a widow. But in the 1891 census, Joseph Sr. is with Harriet, and Joseph Jr. is missing, altho' he was only ten years of age. Is Harriet a second wife who married Joseph Sr. after Anna's death, and Joseph Jr. did not come to join his father until he was settled in the UK?

Interestingly, Joseph Sr. and Harriet Edwards were not married until the quarter ending September 1894 in Chorlton, Lancashire. Getting a copy of the marriage record should provide the name of Joseph Sr.'s father and hopefully, a more exact place of birth.

I think this is their marriage registration information (from Ancestry.ca):

Joseph Kravczynskyj, aged 22, born Galicia, of Toronto, bachelor, Greek-Catholic, son of Stephen Kravczynskyj and Marya Myzuka, married Anna Baziuk, aged 20, born Galicia, of Toronto, spinster, Greek-Catholic, daughter of Maksym Baziuk and Marya Burban; witnesses: Vasyl Bojko & Stephen Lytniak; 7 September 1916 by Rev. J. Boyarczak, St. Josaphat Church, Toronto.

Anna may have arrived via New York aboard the Kaiser Franz Josef I out of Trieste in May 1914, aged 20, along with likely a brother, Mikolaj, aged 17, both bound for Montreal; Greek Catholic; identified as Ruthenians. She to work as a domestic; he as a farm labourer.

He was born in 1894 approx. From Quebec he travelled to Toronto Ontario.
My great grandmother Annie BAZIUK is also from Austria but, did not come with my great grandfather - as per family they met here. She was born in 1893. I don't know how she arrived in Canada.
Looking for any connections - I am not aware of any siblings or parents of my great grandparents.

The information you seek is not on Ancestry nor FamilySearch. You will need to look through the records to which I provided a link. It will be time consuming, but I think you are fortunate that these records exist in an online format at all.

Hello Elaine. My cousin Ken has been in touch with you about our grandparents, I am Constance daughter of Constance daughter of Florence and Harry Brown, that was what we believed, until my sister Penny started to look at our family tree, we always knew there was a mystery about our grandparents but nothing was ever talked about. It came as a real shock to find out about Granny`s past life. Ken will keep me informed.I will try and upload some photos, I am moving on Thursday to north Lincolnshire so will be off line for a few days. very excited to have found out about a missing part of our history.
Hello Ken

I hope you are not having the same problems as me when trying to send messages via this board, I type lots and then it does not send ..... hopefully this will work this time. My email is nelsonelaine5@gmail.com if you wish to correspond directly.

Like you I have not judged Louisa, she must have had to make some difficult decisions to make in a completely different era. Also I though that she may have changed her name either through remarriage or as Bondy could be seen as a Germanic name and there was a lot of anti german feeling during the war. I am glad she had a good and long life. If it is possible I would really appreciate a photo of her if that is possible. I have one of Henry, Percy and George that was probably taken around 1920 that has been emailed from Canada.

I have also found out that Charles Henry the eldest child, Percy and George were placed in the care of the Fulham Schools, Henry as he was known was able to go out to work within a short time but Percy and George were sent to Canada as British Home Children. I am in touch with George Bondy's son Bill via email, he lives in Canada, Percy and George never returned to the UK.

I am not too far from you in Essex, my brother-in-law lives in Seaford, East Sussex.

Thanks again

Elaine Nelson

Hello Elaine

I am a decendant of Louisa Florence Brown (nee Fielding). My side of the family had no knowledge of Charles Bondy and the children from that marriage until about 2 years ago when my cousin researched our geneology and found out about Grannie's (thats how she was known to us) earlier history.

We were unable to discover what had happened to Charles Bondy so I am grateful for the information about the Isle of Man. But I can tell you about my grandmother. All the time I was growing up, our knowledge was that she had moved to Scotland, specifically Dunfirmline so that my grandfather Harry Brown could work in the Dockyard at Rosyth. That was in 1915. She had 3 children, Constance born in 1914, Margaret died and buried in Dunfirmline and Frederick born 1918, my father.

It seems that the move to Scotland was a good attempt to disappear and start a new life. We don't know the exact circumstances but with her husband locked up in an internment camp and 9 children to care for, she made a decision that is hard to think about for us. I make no judgement, not knowing her full situation, but we believe that as Constance (my aunt Connie) was born in 1914, it is likely that Charles Bondy was the father and she was taken to Scotland by Harry and Louise.

I have a marrige certificate for Harry and Louise dated 5/8/15 showing their address as Portsea where Harry would have been working in Portsmouth Dockyard before moving to Scotland. This was a bigamous marrige because as far as I know, Charles Bondy was at that time on the Isle of Man.

They returned to Portsmouth some 10 years later. My father Frederick, married in 1947 and had 2 children, me and my sister. I live in Brighton and she lives in Crawley. Harry died in 1952, and my grandmother died in 1975. She occasionally used different surnames such as Greenfield presumably still trying to remain untraceable.

Hope thats useful.

Ken Brown

Thank you so much I would be very grateful. The last info I have on Charles Bondy (son of Gottleib) was that he was interned on a POW camp on the Isle of Man in 1914. If he was returned to Austria at the end of the war I have no way of knowing as all the records were destroyed. I have an address to write to that will have records of the deaths in the camp over the 4 year period, unfortunately they do not accept phone calls or email.

Around 1999, I was in touch via these boards and e-mail, with a Yak Bondy who avidly searched for his roots. His line went back to Hungary. Therefore, he may not be related, but he might have picked up a lot of detail about other Bondy branches. His research resulted in a CD.

If I am not mistaken, Yak lived/lives in England. Maybe there are readers of this board who know Yak's e-mail address. I will check the CD whether I find references to your Bondy lines.

Regards, Fritz Königshofer, Bethesda, Maryland, USA

It would seem that Franz Lizka is also hard to find. I assumed that would also be Ella's last name also but I cannot find any information on her using Lizka. Maybe she has a different father/last name? I find nothing on Ancestry about her. Just hoping it would be easier than this to find her or her family. I will keep looking.
