I am searching for my grandmothers family. My grandmother, Mary Kulusich was born in Dubrovnick, Yugoslavia and came to the US with her uncle Jacob Kulusich.

Her parents names were Ante and Marija Radulji Kulusich. I also recall hearing of a sister(possibly mentally retarded). I believe her name was Nebeljka.

The spellings of these names are probably not correct, but I hope they are clse enough that someone might recognize them.

Have you looked in the town of Dubrovnik's phone book for the family names?

The town of DUBROVNIK, Croatia is listing 3 RADULJ no Radulji.
NO Kulusich or Kulusic or Kalusic. Would need the spelling that was used in the "old country" to find the family.

The Slovenian phone book is listing the name KULUS'IC' in Trbovlje.
The name RADULJ lists in Ljubljana and Celje. NO Radulji.

thank you for your help. THis is my fathers family and i have not had any contact with them since i was a little girl. I do remember that the spelling was changed. I believe that my grandmothers cousin spelled his name KULASICH...could that be the correct spelling? Please do keep in touch. any information would be appreciated. Another thing i remember from when I was little was a painting of Dubrovnik that my fathers cousin had painted. I beleive his name was Paulo Kulasich(?)

From the family history that I know, the Kulusich's resided in a tiny village very close the town of Split which would have been the market town that they went to to trade and buy supplies. Dubrovnik would have been considered the main municiple center (much as the county seat in America). During the reign of the Hapsburg's, many of the births were listed via the county seat for their census numbers instead of the small villages. We got our information from birth certificates and family stories. We are still attempting to find my grandfather's name (Nicholas Kulusich) on the ship manifests. We can find his brother Matthew but not him even though we know his dates of passage. He left a brother (or two) and two sisters back in Croatia while his brother and two cousins came over. Some settled here in Farrell and the other two cousins moved to California. I have alot more information if you are interested! My cousin Helen just told me about this thread.

Births were NOT recorded by Municipalities until around 1946. Prior to that time births were recorded in church books. When a child was baptized the baptismal date was recorded along with the date of birth.

The birth certificates you (if they are from Croatia) are transritions from church records and were not made at the time of birth.

And if they were born in a village near Split, then Dubrovnik would NOT have been the municipal center for their village. In fact from what I see of Mathew (Mate) ship manifest it shows his birthplace as Klyuca (which should be Ključ, which means key) and that place is clearly near Sibenik. There are still KULUSIC residing there today.

Thank you for the info. The information I wrote was based on what my grandfather and his brother told my parents an cousins in family stories. Matu was my great uncle (my grandfather's brother) and though the manifest states Kluj, the documents we have from his family show Split. These are school records and some official documents from the state. The baptismal record does however show Kluj. As for my grandfather Nick, we can find nothing from a ship manifest though he says he sailed out of Trieste and landed in New York. Basically, the information I relayed is what they themselves have told us with limited documentation to back it up. I may have to sneak up to your area to check it out!
