Schollum Families

I am looking for Schollum family relatives. My particular Schollum ancestors came from Staab [now called Stod] near Pilzen/Pilsen in what is now the Czech Republic.

The Schollums [and other Bohemian families: Remiger, Straka, Wenzlick, Bayer, Turnwald, Rauner, Kass, etc, sailed out to New Zealand in 1863 on the ship "War Spirit"

Any information on the Schollum families would be much appreciated. Family folklore has that distant relatives still live in Germany and Austria. Contact has been made with Benno Schollum in Vienna/Wein.

It is possible that the name has changed spelling over the years: suggestions include: Scholum, Scholem, Schollem, Schollom, Scholam, Schoelem, Schoelheym, Sholum, Sholem.
all contacts will be answered.

Went to Schollum family reunion in Puhoi NZ some 8 years ago and was interested to look up more history on the family when I kept coming across your searches. Would be grateful if you could pass on any further information you have. I am one of three daughters of Owen Charles Schollum of Auckland NZ. I moved to Australia about 5 years ago.

SCHOLLUM Family research

This is the latest information I have been able to create. Hope this assists others with their research. (Please see end of this mesage)

The earliest known Schollum is a MICHAEL Schollum, ( parents, and date and place of Birth unknown, but believed to be around 1780, somewhere in the farm townships/villages east of Pilsen/Plzen, Bohemia [now part of the Czech Republic])

MICHAEL Schollum, occupation given as Stovebuilder, of Salluschen (Zaluzi (?)--Village now believed to have been destroyed), married MARIA SCHWARZ (date and place unknown, but possibly around 1800) . Maria was the daughter of Peter/Peit SCHWARZ and Salomona [unsure whether this is first name or surname), both of whom are from Rothaugust (now called Cerveny Ujezd ) which is near Zbuch, and half way in a southwest direction between Pilsen and Staab/Stod.

MICHAEL and Maria Schollum are believed to have had a number of children:
Barbara: born 1803
Anton: 1809
Elizabetha: 1811
JOHANN/JOHN born 8 May 1815
JOSEF (1818) [see below]*
Adam: 1823

Also, possibly: Anna, Maria, Margareth (see below) and Simon. These names are still to be verified.

Interestingly, a copy of a letter written in 1965 from a John/Johann Schollum, living in Altotting, [West Germany] states that his grandfather JOSEF Schollum,* born 18.2.1818, died 1906, in his 89th year, had two brothers (sic**), Johann & Wenzel (sic) that went to New Zealand in 1863, and that his grandfather communicated with them up until his death. This writer also stated that he noted in the Vienna paper ‘Interessanten Blatt’ in 1913 a report about the 50th anniversary of the settlement of the ‘German colony of Puhoi’ and a photo of “great-uncle John Schollum and his wife”. The writer of the letter, John Schollum, writes that he sent a letter and “promptly received a letter in reply which was written in German, and written fairly free of mistakes”.
This John states that after the war his sons wrote to Fritz Schollum in 1953, and the last letter received was from Fritz Schollum, dated 11.5.53.
** It is debateable whether this relationship is correct, as Johann (born 1842) and Wenzl (born 1856) are believed to be the sons of Johann Schollum (born 1815) (see below) and thus are the nephews of JOSEF Schollum.

JOHANN/JOHN Schollum born 8 May 1815 married Rosaline Lenhard on 4 February at Rochlova/Rochlov ( a town/village almost east of Pilsen, and north of both Stod and Zaluli.
Rosaline Lenhard (born on 20 October 1813 at Rochlova) was the twin daughter of Georg Lenhard [local Shepherd] and Katharina Schmidt. This Katharina was the daughter of JOSEF Schmidt, Stovebuilder of Rochlova and X Ottikie [of Ipsmein].

JOHANN/JOHN and MARIA Schollum were originally believed by New Zealand families to have had three sons, and possibly one other. The three sons who travelled to New Zealand to settle at Puhoi were: (1) John Wenzl Schollum, born 16 December 1842 at Rothaugest 14, Bohemia; (2) Joseph Schollum, born 25 November 1846 at at Rothaugest 14, Bohemia; NB this Josef/Joseph Schollum married his ‘cousin’: Dorothea Schollum, born 22 August 1850, daughter of Margareth Schollum; and (3) Wenzl schollum, born 12 August 1856 at at Rothaugest 14, Bohemia.

Details of their families are well documented in the Puhoi Schollum records.

Family members hold copies of letters from other Schollums suggesting more links. In particular, knowledge of the existence of Robert Schollum, the famous Austrian composer and Music teacher, suggested the existence of another extended family. [See below] This has now been partly verified.

JOHANN/JOHN and MARIA SCHOLLUM’s first son was JACOB Schollum, born on 3 May 1841 at Rothaugest. JACOB Schollum married Anna Irscick (born 14 May 1846 in Freisten). Date and place of marriage is unknown,

JACOB and ANNA Schollum had at least one son: Simon Schollum, date and place of birth unknown, but possibly 4 June 1868 in Vienna. Another son, name unknown, but possibly Johann, is believed to be the father of Wilhelm Schollum. ( A birth record for a Wilhelm Schollum , (supplied in available in 1986), showing a birth on 5 September 1915, [understood to have been born in Salluschen, Czechoslovakia, and shifted to Bavaria after the Second World War], with parents being Johann Schollum and Magdalena Schollum [nee] Jaklin). Efforts are being made to relocate Wilhelm’s daughter and son-in-law: Heidi and JOSEF Pichlmeier. (This Wilhelm Schollum is stated as being Robert Schollum’s cousin.)
It is possible that this Johann Schollum’s father/grandfather was the above mentioned JOSEF Schollum, and that Wilhelm is one of the sons mentioned in Johann’s letter in 1965.

SIMON Schollum married JOSEPHINE STASNY (date and place unknown, but believed to be 27 November 1903 in Vienna). Josephine/Josefine Stastny, born 22 September 1877, was the daughter of Richard Stastny , born 20 September 1852, and Josepha Stastny, born 1 April 1852 (in Chotebor)

SIMON and JOSEPHINE Schollum had at least three sons:
RICHARD Schollum, born 4 May 1904, died 18 October 1911; (2) WALTER Schollum, born 8 January 1906, died 4 July 1912; and (3) ROBERT Schollum, born 22 August 1913.
Simon Schollum died either in 1914 or 1921. In any event Robert Schollum was principally raised by his mother. They lived in different parts of Vienna. In July 1945 Robert’s mother Josephine died.

Robert attended school in Vienna and Modling, near Vienna, and studied at the Neues Wiener Konservatorium, and at the Vienna Music Academy. Robert had military service as a paymaster, saw service in Russia, and during this time was active as a conductor, piano teacher and choir master. In 1944 his Vienna flat was bombed and he moved to Ottosheim near Linz where he worked until 1959 before returning to Vienna.
Robert died 30 September 1987. Much is now known about his career and is readily available.
