Upon my research using Ancestry.com I'm hoping that I might find more information about the Hakoah Vienna Jewish Sporting Club that had reached its height prior to the Second World War.
I’m exceptionally interested, as I am researching information about the Hakoah in the interwar years for a professional historian at Gettysburg College. He has committed himself to a thorough investigation of the subject material, traveling to different nations in pursuit of any artifacts that can be discovered and then unraveled.
Information on this material is scarce. Of course, the onslaught of Nazi Germany forced many in Jewish associations, like the Hakoah Vienna group, to leave the continent early on under the realm of Hitler. Then, any information that was left from the war was removed from Vienna or destroyed completely. We hope that family members or other interest groups may still hold the key to so many important stories from the day. We hope for more information on this truly remarkable group of men and women.
Names such as Hedy Bienenfeld or Hedy Bienenfeld-Wertheimer, Zsigo Wertheimer, Valentin, Rosenfeld, Lucie Goldner, Judith Deutsch, Fritzi Lowy, Nikolaus, (Micki) Hirschl, and Bela Guttmann are of particular interest to us, as they were exemplary and highlighted members of the Hakoah in what information we do have. However, this is just our starting point.
Is there any chance that you may have any letters or diaries that tell of these experiences? Any photographs, family stories, or other information? Or might you know any other relatives who could provide further information? The interwar period is the focus of our research, but anything you have to help us will be greatly appreciated.
