Harringers from Neukirchen?

I hope I'm in the correct place to post this message. My ancestors (Harringer) came from Salzburg and claimed part to a hotel somewhere in Austria. They said that the hotel was sometimes used as a feed store. I have some pictures of a hotel that is in Krimml (Tauernhaus) and did research on it. There is no indications that my ancestors owned or part owned that hotel. Well, I did a search for Harringers in Austria, and found that there is a Harringer Gasthaus in Neukirchen. Harringer isn't that common of a name, and I am wondering if anyone knows anything about this hotel, or its history. The owner's name is Johann Harringer, which is the same name as my great great grandfather. If anyone knows anything about this, I would greatly appreciate it. If I am posting this message in the wrong place, please help me to find where I can post it. Thank you!

Schiling/Schilling from Grunbach

I have a 1711 marriage record from Tiefenbach, Baden, Germany of a Joannes Schiling and Maria Margaretha Hermann. It says that Joannes is from Grunbach, Austria. 1711 is the earliest entry for a Schiling in Tiefenbach and I have connected all the Tiefenbach Schiling/Schilling to my ancestral line. I am now trying to locate the family name in Grunbach, Austria. Joannes Schiling I expect would have been born around 1680-1695. Unfortunately, practically every male born in Tiefenbach was named Joannes but usually went by a middle name and this particular Joannes Schiling did not go by any other name, so Joannes may be the first or middle name. If you have any Schiling/Schillings from Gunbach, Austria, can you please fill me in, especially if you have films from the LDS/Mormon Family History Lirary, I'd love to know the film number(s) to order.

Re: Zangerl & Allied Families

I have some info on the Zangerl & Allied Families of Austria & Germany. I realize the spelling could have changed over the years.

I am in the process of writing a book on these family lineages. The following is an excerpt from my book entitled, "THE ZANGERL & ALLIED FAMILIES - Thru the Years: 1492-2000"

(Actual dates go back as far as 1359 on some indivuals)

"The above CHRISTOF ZANGERL had the following five sons; Anton, KASPAR, Johann, Christian and Wolfgang. Wolfgang moved to Landeck. All the Zangerl families in Prutz and around Oberinutal (upper Austria) were descendants of Wolfgang.

The son KASPAR ZANGERL in #3 above (my 7th great grandfather had 6 sons; Peter, Jakob, Johann, Kaspar, Anton, and Christian. Anton and Christian moved to Langesthain. From Anton & Christian came all the descendants who live in Kappel, See, and Langesthain."

Am willing to share info that I have documented in my book with those of you with same names & interests (freely given to those of same names lineages in exchange for your info.)

Thank you!
Carol Zangerl
My family
were coal miners, and lived in republic, brookside area..
Brookside alabama.com/history
The Brookside mine was opened in 1886 by the Coalburg Coal and Coke
Company. It was purchased one year later by the Sloss Iron and Steel
Company as a source of fuel for their blast furnaces in Birmingham.
Following the practice of the time, the mined coal was processed into
coke in rows of beehive ovens banked into the hillside below the mine
opening. A beehive oven is used to turn coal ore into coke. In 1897 a
Robinson-Ramsey Coal Washer was installed, increasing the efficiency
of coke burning and therefore the overall efficiency of the mine.
Other advanced equipment was also installed at Brookside, placing it
at the forefront of mining technology in the Birmingham District at
the turn of the century.

Brookside served as the headquarters for four Sloss-owned mines in
the immediate area: Cardiff, Coalburg, Brazil and Brookside. Because
the capacity of Brookside's processing equipment exceeded the mine
output, some of the slack from the Brazil mine was brought to
Brookside for washing and coking.

Sloss, like other employers in the booming industrial expansion of
the early 20th century, had difficulty recruiting skilled labor.
Recruitment efforts extended internationally and Brookside became the
home of many Czechoslovakian immigrants and their families who made
their way to the mines. As Brookside became a destination for Eastern
European miners in the area, the culture of the town reflected their
ethnic traditions. A Russian Orthodox Church was founded and served
to strengthen community ties. Unlike other mines where skilled whites
and unskilled blacks could be played against each other by the
owners, the Brookside miners were tightly organized and carried out a
successful (albeit violent) strike in 1906.

Between 1910 and 1920, mining operations jumped around to several
seams and the number of miners fluctuated between a low of 54 in 1910
and a high of over 600 in 1914. In 1913 the mechanical coal cutters
used previously were supplanted by hand picks. A new church building
for St. Nicholas was completed in 1916. A United Mine Workers of
America-led general strike in 1920 combined with a global
depreciation in the coal market, led to a shutdown of the mine. When
the strike was settled in 1921, Brookside mine was never re-opened.
Sloss removed all of the surface works and held on to the mine
property. In 1952 Sloss merged with the U. S. Pipe and Foundry
Company, a subsidiary of Jim Walter Industries since 1969.

-Brookside, Alabama, a quiet mining town in western Jefferson County,
developed from the efforts of Sloss-Sheffield Iron and Steel Company
to produce its own coal for use in the blast furnaces located in
Birmingham. Brookside grew up around the coal mines of Sloss.
Brookside's unique ethnic makeup, however, sets it apart from other
similarly founded Alabama towns. While quite a variety of ethnic
groups called Birmingham home, Slovaks were the dominant ethnic group
in Brookside. Slovak immigrants left their homes in Nieletz, Saros,
and other villages in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to settle in
Brookside, Alabama, in the 1890's. By 1910 Slovak families
constituted approximately 37% of Brookside's population and they had
established two churches, a school, a social organization, and firmly
rooted their eastern European traditions in the fabric of their own,
and Brookside's daily existence."
Staci S. Simon (Glover)
Masters Thesis 1997
University of Alabama at Birmingham

Does anyone know of any areas of present day Bavaria that were once part of Austria (or an Austrian principality) but changed hands after 1800 and remained part of Bavaria?

I know of the Rupertigau, which was a northwestern district of the Archbishopric of Salzberg, which became a permanent part of Bavaria after 1816. Rupertigau is now a part of the of the Berchtesgaden Land and Traunstein districts of modern Bavaria.

Does anyone know of any areas that were once part of Tirol or Upper Austria that became and remained part of Bavaria.

Thanks.
B.
During a May 2007 bicycle tour on the south bank of the Danube, between Wesenufer and Aschach we came across the attached monument, stating that bargeman Franz Viehböck, transporting timber, died during an accident at the site on 29 December 1915. The deceased was a realtor, wood dealer and granite owner of Neuhaus. A plaque at the base states that the monument was restored in 1986 by Alois Lischka and Max Hackl.
Looking for relatives of Ignatz Breirather (Braurather) who left Austria in the early 1900s for America. I believe he may have been an only son, with as many as 8 sisters who are probably married and have different last names now. Ignatz was from Gleink, which is just north of Steyr.

Hirschvogel Records Need Translation

I have received some genealogical records (12-13 pages) which are hand-written in German. I have looked for a translator, and quite honestly cannot afford the amount most of them would charge. My niece was taking German, and was able to translate a little of it, but found the job too much for her. She did say that the Hirschvogel name is associated with blacksmith work from one generation to another. Does anyone know of reliable translators who would be interested in doing this for a modest fee? I would appreciate any advice as to I who I might contact. Thanks.

Laura McCabe

Hi,
My Taubinger ancestors were originally from Upper Austria and I believe that they were from either Weissenkirchen or Waizenkirchen. They were protestant and were forced to leave this area in the early C17 (1623 is the date that my grandfather always stated) due to religious persecution and moved to Pressburg/Bratislava.
I am keen to find out where the family originated from - does anyone have any ideas about how to find out? Are there church records from the early C17 still in existence?
Many thanks for any help or ideas!
Kierner Family Genealogy

Greetings. I am looking for information on my adoptive ancestors. My father was adopted by Charles Kierner, so I am a Kierner, though not in blood. My great grandfather was born Anton Risener in Bavaria, Germany somewhere around the year 1879. I believe he was adopted by the Kierners in Steyr, Austria...as his parents and wife (Anna) were listed as Austrian, and that is where his children were born. The family came to Ellis Island, New York, USA in 1911 from Bremen, Germany on the Kaiser Wilhelm de Grosse. The families' last place of residence is Steyr, Austria. My great grandmother, Anna Kierner was born in Austria around the year 1882. My grandfather, Charles Kierner was born in Austria (I believe Steyr) around the year 1907. If anyone can help I would GREATLY appreciate it. God bless, Chris Kierner

I am doing a family tree on genealogy and would like to get as much information as I can get. I am looking for the surname Daxner and Loidl. My family comes from Bad-Ischl (Jainzen),my grandfathers name was Nikolaus Daxner and my grandmothers name was Franziska Daxner (Loidl) they had had three(3) children, Nikolaus,Johann and Margaretha(my mother) I was born there in 1951 and my name is Edward(Eduard) and my sister Mitzi was born there in 1953. My mother and sister came to the USA in 1956 and I stayed with my grandfather until 1957 when I also came to the USA. I would appreciate as much information as possible, I know that there are still members of both families still living in and around the Bad-Ischl are although some of them I've heard have moved to surrounding areas, St.Wolfgang,Ebensee, Bad Goisern,Hallstatt all with in the Bad Ischl area I would like to back in time as far as possible.I'm doing this for my mother as all the above are now deceased including my sister who died 02-03-2000.

I just recently found that my Thalheimers immigrated from Superiori, Austria to Rabach Mombris Germany to Alzenau Mombris Germany to the United States. Can anyone help me out on the "how to's" of researching in Austria?
I am searching for parents of Thomas Thalheimer and also his wife. I actually have the records of his children in Rabach but no mention of his parents or a wife.

A couple of years ago I learned that two of my ancestors, Martin Kapfhammer and Anna Perndl, were from Kollerschlag, Upper Austria. I have written to the church in Kollerschlag, that should have their birth records, several times, wanting to know if I could obtain copies of these birth records and possibly existing marriage record, and what the fees for this service would be. I never received any kind of response to any of these inquiries though.
This holds true for inquiries regarding other Austrian ancestors in other towns as well. Can anyone help me with this matter?
GONSLER in Austria abt 1888

Zlatica and Tilman,

Thank you for your replies. I have only one aunt (86 yrs old)that is still alive that is the daughter of my grandfather Joseph GONSLER 2nd. She doesnt remember hearing anything from her relatives. Her father Joseph was born on September 18, 1886 as found in the 1900 Alpena Michigan Census and is said to have been born in Hungary.( I dont have anything in regards to Joseph in the WWI draft applications but 2 of his brothers draft applications say that they were born in Austria.)

Joseph would have been 2-3 years old when they arrived in 1888-9. His mother's name was Elizabeth (Varga) GONSLER which shows in the 1920 Alpena, Mi census that she was born (October 17, 1863)in Majyarorszag, Austria (with her mother tongue as hungarian).

Maybe I would be better off looking for her family and then that may get me back to her husband (may great-grandfather) Joseph GONSLER. All I know is this has become a 10 year HOLD for me in the GONSLER research. I am now in the boat with all of the other frustrated genealogists that cant find their roots to the old country. All I can figure with the GONSLER name is that the spelling was different when they came to the USA.
Thank you again for the information and websites that I can check out.

Cindy

I am looking for information on Franz (Frank) Stoger (Stoeger), born in Ulbach (Julback) Austria. He married Theresa Keheberger (Colberger) in Linz Austria. She died before 1886. In 1886, Franz married Rosalia Colberger (Theresa's sister) in Linz.

Franz and Theresa had 4 children as far as I can find: Rudolph, Louis, Charles, Franz Jr.
Franz and Rosalia had 2 children Rose and Hedwig (Hattie).

They came to the US in 1894 aboard the Noordland from Antwerp.

I would like to find more information on Franz and his wives. Any help would be appreciated.
