Looking for any informaiton on Krein, Austria.

My great-grandfather (Michael Schutte/Schulte) obituary stated that he was born in Krein, Austria.

Michael moved from Austria to L'Anse, Michigan in 1857. He spent five years there and then moved to Calumet, Michigan; where he lived the rest of his life.

Thank you in advance for any information.

This could be Krain, a crownland of the Austrian Empire. The Latin name was Carniola. Today, Krain forms the major portion of the Republic of Slovenia. Unfortunately not very specific for a search.

There may well be towns called Krein. Where do you read the word, and the name Schulte or Schütte?

as you also posted on the correct board think you mean Grein an der Donau (Grein at the Danube)in Upper-Austria :o)

for an ancestors-search in Austria you must know - before 1938 you must always look at the churchbooks:
>In Austria there is no central register where you can find persons by name. Civil registration of birth, marriages and deaths was introduced in Austria in 1938. Before this year the registers were kept by the religious communities (parishes), which are still keeping these documents and data in their own archives. Generally you have to know your ancestors religious affiliation and - if your ancestors were of the catholic faith - the parish they came from.<

so if you would like to search for documents write to the roman.cath.discese-archive in Linz, where the old church-book-entries (= Matriken) are microfilmed for Oberösterreich = Upper-Austria. you must have definitly the birth-date of the person you looking for:

Grein has entries since 1632:

also write directly to the parish-church(Pfarre)Grein:

Seeing how this person has posted about other family being from Slovenia Krain is most likely correct. And in Slovenia it could have been Krainburg now called Kranj about 15 miles NW of Ljubljana

More likely Krain, since this person has posted about other family from Slovenia. Perhaps it is Kranj formerly Krainburg under Austria.

i also thought so, as is posted on OÖ-Board - the only one other posting for Slovenia is about the name Sterk:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.eeurope.slovenia.gener...

i wonder why is posted on board for Upper-Austria (and Lower-Austria).

The reason why I posted it here was that I didn't know where the city was located.

Thank you all for your information!
