Hello, I am looking for a birth record for Achille Menini, born in Austria in 1903. A marriage record from the 1920s show he was born in Austria. His immigration papers has place of birth as ville de Monte, Italy. Does anyone know of a connection with these two places. Any information would be appreciated.

Many Croatians from the Adriatic Coastal region were early immigrants via the Gulf Ports IE New Orleans, Galveston TX and perhaps some other ports. These people were adept seamen. And at that time Austria ruled over the Adriatic region of Croatia.

Adam Eterovich, who is perhaps the first Croatian genealogist in America has written a great deal about those early Croatians

http://www.croatians.com/

The link below is interesting as it states that John COCOWITCH was from Sweden. Perhaps this is so, but I saw one other family descended from these early Croatians who believed their ancestor was a sailor from Switzerland! And of course he wasn't he was from one of the Croatian islands

https://sites.google.com/a/flgenweb.net/marion/historymenu/j...

The information below comes from a researcher in 2005

Kokovich / Cocowitch - 1858 Charleston, South Carolina

(Lauren Stokes Gray, Leesburg, Florida and John Cocowitch, Dumfries, Virginia) The following information is what I have after nearly 20 years of research. John Francis Cocowitch came to Charleston SC sometime around 1850. He was born in 1820 and the earliest record we have is his marriage entry from a Mariner's Chapel in Charleston in 1858 where his name is entered as "Cocovich" and he stated he was from Austria. The next record we have is from the 1860 federal census for Charleston where he and his wife of two years, Penelope White of South Carolina, are residing in town with the Joekish family and all state they are German speaking. One other record we have states that he was from Italy. Ivan Franjo Cocovic' was the most likely original name.

I am quite certain that Franjo was a mariner by trade and therefore I assume he grew up in a town or region close to the sea. Part of our family lore is that he was a sea captain and may have mastered his own boat and was a gun running for the confederate side during the Civil War. Part of our family thinks he may have come to Charleston via New York and another section of the family believes his ship burned. Franjo had five children between 1860 and 1871. Their names were John Franklin, Mark C., Catherine, Frances Henrietta and Madeline. I don't know if there are any clues in these names.

This is a very interesting genealogical search, as it pre-dates the common period of Croatian immigration to the U.S. I think Cocovich is a Croatian surname. Franjo, definitely is a common Croatian form of Frank. In the period you mention the surname probably was spelt Cocovich, with an H on the end. The version with a W could be a German spelling as they list themselves are German. If they are from western Croatia, it would be common to list themselves as Italian, even if they spoke Croatian at home.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

sounds for misspelling of a croatian name. ;)

as example Cukovic at Ellisisland-imigrations-habour:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchMore.asp?LNM=CUKOVIC&...
but also possibility to find under misspelling-variants there. John could have been then Ivan or Jovan. but as emigrated at 1850s not to find at Ellisisland.
www.castlegarden.org

also Hungary can be possible with border-changings where are he came from. Croatia and Hungary both were until 1918 part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. because of that stated "austrian". also possible that the person lived before emigration in another crownland of the Empire. but the name is croatian.
http://www.brainworker.ch/Oesterreich/Austria-hungary.png

I am a great grand son of Jacob Neyer who was the father of Joseph Neyer! Our family came from Bludenz/Burs area of the Volarbeg in western Austria in1870 to the Beal city area in central Michigan. My father was also named after his father who was also Jacob, but went by his middle name "John". My dads sister Agnes Neyer Engler is the Mother of our past Governor of Michigan John Engler! Give me a call at 989 5603907 or my office 989 7735972 as I would be happy to talk to you about our families! Also I have been in Bludenz/Burs many times! I hope to hear from you!
Hello,

I’m looking for my great grandparents that called Johann Hanisch and Petronella Hanisch.
In the ship list says that they were from Neustadt, Austria but I tried to contact few “churchs” in Wiener Neustadt and they said they didn’t find any register of Johann or Petronella Hanisch (but I guess they don’t even tried to find ).

Please, could someone help me to discover if there was another Neustadt in Austria in 1890 – 1900?
Johann came to Brazil in 1893 and Petronella came in 1894 with 3 kids (Anna Hanisch, Johann Hanisch and Hermine Hanisch).

In other way, I think they could have lived in another city in Germany.

Thanks!
Alana
I have no idea if this is helpful to your research, but a Joseph Kempinger died approx. 23 January 1945 in Milwaukee, Wis. His death notice was published in the local German language paper, possibly the English language Milwaukee Journal or Milwaukee Sentinel too. You can browse their archive by date through Google Historic Newspapers, or Journal Sentinel Archive, start with the Classified section. (I'm not a relative, the local German papers are not online, I don't own the clipping.)

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping to access our historic immigrant culture.

There are also notices found in three different German newspapers for a Maria Chapek.

These are indexed in the collection: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items", covering 1844-1950.

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping to access our historic German-American culture.

From my experience having lived in Europe and having travelled there frequently, most church yards do not have old grave stones in them. Space is limited and cemetery plots are typically rented long term. If the plot does stay in the family, typically newer people are buried there and newer stones are placed on the spot. I recently visited the cemetery for my great-great grandmother's church in Lower Austria and there wasn't a headstone early than about 1900, even though the church dates back to the 11th century!

Hello,

Thanks for the information you've provided. I know a little about Joseph Retzl, but not much.

His wife (Franziska) came with Joseph, I do not know why Joseph is not showing up in the Ellis Island documents (perhaps they misspelled his name). As for the others, Ferdinand who came later, is my great-uncle Frank (I believe). Joseph and Franziska came to the USA with my grandfather (Johann/Hans) when he was about a year old. Because of money problems, they left their other son (Frank/Ferdinand) back in Austria with family and sent for him when they had enough money. It appears it was about 9 years until Ferdinand was able to come to America. As for the other two Retzl names you sent (Mathias and Theresia), I do not know those individuals.

I believe the Retzl's were Roman Catholic as that is what my grandfather was. I have found a few Retzl's that are still in Austria, but worry that so much time has past that my line of Retzl ancestry is all but forgotten.

Thanks

Kenny

My grandfather's name was Marko. Marko came to the United States in the early 1900s with Frank. Manda had a 10 year old daughter with her named Agnes. I believe her Croatia name was Darla. Manda later had two sons Martin and Thomas and another daughter Kathryn. They lived in Pennsylvania. I am the oldest daughter of Tom Zalock. Looking for relatives.
