Only for Lutherans of Poppendorf was the parish in Eltendorf. For Roman-catholics, the parish was in Heiligenkreuz. Civil recording (from Oct. 1895) took place in Eltendorf.

Before you plan your travel, find out where the parish records (matrikeln) of Eltendorf and Heiligenkreuz are kept today. They may still be at the parish, but alternatively they could be at an archive far away.

Does anyone know approximately how many people still speak Hianzisch? Are any young people learning it from the older generations? I am also curious in which areas of Burgenland/Western Hungary it is still spoken. I've read some place names in BB newsletters, but would love to see a map of where it is spoken if someone with the knowledge wants to create one. I think it would be interesting to other BB members as well.

Rachael

Thank you so much for the tip. It is my understanding that the Church records from Poppendorf are/were kept in Eltendorf. I plan on visiting there in the next year...am studying German now. I really appreciate your recommendation.

No. I am not sure of anything which is making this even more difficult. It may also be Tassoni or Tasonyi etc, etc. The more I look the more the possibilities! :)From 1 family of siblings there are multiple different spellings, so I'm not sure which (if any) are the true original from when the came to the us. I would love any help or suggestion that you may have!
Kristen

Well, I am quite "Thomas" about this Y-DNA test, and do not want to say about my questions.
What I can help you, they are the following:
IF your grandmother was M. REGNER, and her son had the same surname, the most probable, that Johann was born by illegal (means: not from a marriage by actual laws) The real father did not want to give he's surname for the child and rested in hidden.I can not think, the name and data of the biological father would be found personally, except by very rigorous interviews in the place, where your papa was born - otherwise it have very little possibility getting result. Have you any letters, envelopes, photos?
BTW if you write to the google the password "Regner+Mönchhof" you will get some probably useful results (I found it in page: http://href.hu/x/adn8 ). Try to take up the contact with them and ask, ask, ask....In the same way I found a lot of unknown informations about the family of a friend of mine, even the interesting persons died long time ago. Otherwise I am not professional researcher, so I did it only by friendship.
But do not forget the European polite forms and do not be impartient, do not want "to eat the Moon" as Kipling wrote it on the Book of the jungle. Your search will be much more enjoyable, like to give money for somebody - although your biological grandfather will not be found anytime, but will learn a lot about the life of your ancestors.
Have a good result!
Lajos Reich, Hungary.
Hello, Trying to locate family members. Maternal grandfather was Franz Mirth born in 1896 in Poppendorf, Austria. Had 7 or 11 siblings: Josef, Anna, Gisela, possibly Theresa, possibly a Julia, too. Emigrated to US (NJ/Philadelphia)in 1920's. I am finding some Mirths who ended up in Allentown, PA as well as Ohio. Not sure if this is the same bunch.

Both Johann Mühl & Anna Sampel are from Wolfau (Farkasfalva). I will order films to confirm marriage
and births. Records in America death & citizenship show the above. You are correct about little Anna. Her death record shows the last name Muehl. As you most likely know the "e" added in Mühl instead of the umlaut accent.
Later the name changed to Miehle. Anna's children know as much or as little as Anna did. There is a vague family story that is as sad as funny but the letter most likely holds the clues.

As land transfered after 1992, after my grandfathers death back to family Austria, I looked to my mothers cousin who traveled there for the transaction. I am behind on contacting my best resource. But I thought also to figure out somethings on my own. When speaking to the cousin she
said the land was is Wolfau, but the family did not live there now they lived in another town (she was going to check for me). This town name and your help will give me direction toward Anna. Maybe this town was hand written for
my mothers cousin as little Anna's daughter. Thank you for writing I thought also the town was spelled wrong and asked my mother who said "that's what I wrote". I enjoyed your
note because you hit some nails right on the head!
Thank you,for some very good information and direction!

Thank you for responding. Bank Note attached. I appreciate any help you can give. This was originally sent to Anna Sampel Muehl. With the hand writing on the bottom my mother says it is the town where she is from. Ellis Island shows in May 1911 Anna Muhl from Farkasfalva, daughter Anna from Dresdorf (spelling ?), my grandfather John from Farkasfalva (Wolfau)& Maria from Chicago (wife & children of husband John). I know they are from Wolfau and the family names trace them to Wolfau, but this Ellis Island record along with the spelling Theisdorf has made me courious, as Dresdorf (sp) and Theisdorf may sound alike when spoke.

Thank you. Can you advise me on how to read the Family History Library Catalog as to what films I would need from Kemeten, for Wolfau post 1895 for civil birth records. The catalog for films for Kemeten does not list Wolfau, were they all combined? Also any idea on what Szulettek or Hazasultak means, the films are listed with dates for both?

Much appreciation!

It is significant that the Ellis Island arrival record of 1911 states that little Anna's birthplace written as Desdorf or similar, was in Austria, not Hungary such as Wolfau. The couple Johann Mühl and Anna Sampel probably lived in "Desdorf" after their marriage, or little Anna had been born out of wedlock, before Johann and Anna met.

Have you the marriage certificate of Johann and Anna, or have you found the record of their wedding? Where was Johann from? Since little Anna was born in then Austria, it is possible that her birth was also reported in the civil records of Kemeten, the place of civil recording for Wolfau. The out-of-country births were recorded in prose which did not follow the preprinted birth forms.

The bank note seems to say Theisdorf or Dheisdorf. I agree that this is likely the birthplace of little Anna. I suspect, however, that both places are misspelled. Could it possibly mean Gleisdorf, a district capital in Eastern Styria?

Is there a death record or social security record for little Anna which could show her birthplace in yet more spellings?

You could probably look up these records yourself on LDS microfilm. I think it is highly likely that you would find them in the films with the civil records of Vaskeresztes (aka Németkeresztes).

When official civil recording was introduced in old Hungary from October 1895 onwards, Horvátlövõ was assigned to the recording office in Vaskeresztes. This is also what likely happened (though not always). It looks as if in 1907, the recording district was split in two, with recording offices in Felsõcsatár and Pornó, and no longer in Vaskeresztes. In this case, recordings for Horvátlövõ may well have moved to Pornó.

Your dates are clearly within the timeframe of the civil records of Vaskeresztes. To find out the LDS film numbers, go to http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp and search for the place name Vaskeresztes, then follow the leads.

Knor and Knorr are likely the same name in different spellings. Knorr might be the more recent spelling.

Before the introduction of civil recording in 1895, the church's baptismal certificate served also as the official birth certificate. Could you post a scan of the certificate you got? In most cases, baptism occurred on the same day, or the next day, from birth. You could look up the birth/baptism entry in the records of Bocksdorf filmed by LDS.

The fast way to finding living relatives would be to contact bearers of your family names in Rohr and hope for the best. You could prepare yourself better if you locate house numbers and births to your line in the civil records of Stegersbach. Persons born in the 1910 to 1920 timeframe may still be alive or are at least well remembered.

Dear Mr. Reich,
Thank you so much for your reply to my query; you provided excellent information.
My father was illegitimate. I was not yet born when Grandmother Maria Regner died and I was only 15 years old when my father died, so I do not have any letters, envelopes or photos from the early 1900's. (I am now 70 years old.)

I wonder if you and I are related. Maria Regner's Aunt Theresia Regner (her father's sister) married Anton Reich in 1876 in Barátfalu, Moson, Hungary. They had 9 children. Do you know some of the names of your Reich ancestors?

Thank you again,
John Klein
To all Burgenlanders

A few years ago I posted a query asking for help to find my paternal grandfather. After extensive research I have not been successful and feel that I am at a dead-end. My grandmother (Maria Regner - b. 1877) came to the USA, with my father (Johann Regner – b. 1900), from Mönchhof, Burgenland in 1903. (Johann’s birth records do not show the name of his father.) Maria married Franz Klein and my father (Johann Regner) changed his name to John Alois Klein.

I have decided to try Y-DNA genealogy. I am asking men, whose paternal ancestors are from the Burgenland, to consider taking a Y-DNA test. The company with whom I tested is Family Tree DNA: https://www.familytreedna.com (I tested for 37 markers.) Y-DNA testing may also match you with cousins you didn’t know you had. No matter which company you select, it would be most appreciated if you would let me know which one it is and for how many markers you tested. My e-mail address: john.jak133h@gmail.com.

Would those of you who have already taken a Y-DNA test, please let me know where the testing was done, and for how many markers you tested? We can arrange to have our Y-DNA test results compared.

Thank you so much,
John A. Klein II
I would like to know how to get a copy of the birth certificate for my grandmother? I have a copy of her Baptisatorum, Terez Knor, 01 Oct. 1880. I would like to know her birthdate. She was born in Rohr, Hungary.
I would also like to know how I can locate relatives living in Rohr currently.
Thank you; Betty
