I am seeking information on the half-siblings of my father, Alfred Andrew FREDERIKSEN, and any descendants living on St. Croix.
My grandfather, Frederik Waldemar (aka Walter/Hoople-hammer) FREDERIKSEN,had 6 children through his marriage to my grandmmother, Vivienne Eagan BROWN aka Miss Vivy. They are: Vivienne Adina(deceased); Karen Maud; Axel Lambert (deceased); Randolph Waldemar; Alfred Andrew and Asta Olivia, listed in the order of their birth.
"Hoople-hammer" had 3 children prior to his marriage to my grandmother-- Arthur, Otis Bainhardt and a daughter whose name I do not know. I know that Arthur had several children, including twins, Yvonne and Laverne, and died on St. Croix several years ago. Otis and the half-sister lived in New York. Otis had one son, name unknown, and died in New York in 1982. I have no information on the half-sister.
They spelled their surname "FREDRICKSEN." We spell ours "FREDERIKSEN." That's another story...
Otis' mother was Agather HINES. I don't know if the 3 half-siblings all had the same mother.
Any info will be appreciated.
Ancestors on my grandmother's side include her: father, Rev. Alfred Constantine BROWN, son of Charles E. and Ellen (EAGAN) BROWN; mother, Mary MEYER, daughter of Brandmajor Abraham C. MEYER and Mary BEHAGEN.
Abraham MEYER was the son of Elizabeth MEYER and (CHITTENTON/CHIPPERSON?). He was born ca. 1813 and died in 1881. His mother, Elizabeth was born ca 1786/90; she was a slave owned by John and Jane MEYER (at Strawberry Hill?) and was given her freedom in 1804. She had several children by several different fathers-- SCHMALZ, WILHELM and WHITE are some of the surnames.
Mary BEHAGEN was the daughter of Rose JOSEPH and ? BEHAGEN.
She was born ca 1817 and died in 1888. Rose was a slave and purchased her freedom prior to 1810.
Ellen EAGAN was born ca 1832 in and died 15APR1891 in the US; her body was brought back to St. Croix for burial.
Charles E. BROWN was born ca 1825 and died sometime in the 1860's. His mother, name unknown, is believed to have been the daughter of Madlane/Magdelena BENTZON. Magdelena was born in the 1780's and purchased her freedom probably prior to 1800. Her known children were Cecilia, born ca 1806, and Elizabeth, born ca 1809. Cecilia is listed in the 1860 Danish census for St. Croix in the home of Charles E. Brown as his aunt. Cecilia and Elizabeth are listed in the same household in the 1901 census in a property belonging to "the ears [sic] of Madlane BENTZON."
I hope I haven't droned on too long. I have been researching since December '83 and I've made some progress starting from ground zero. Now, I'm trying to go a little further back and reconnect with some of the extended family. I am in contact with my folks at East Hill.
