So I did end up stopping by the Schwarzman Research Library on a week day last week, which btw has some amazing architecture. I know know tourist from around the world probably place this Library in their itinarary, as streams people from all different walks of life walked in and out. Now I had mistakenly thought that the library closed at 11pm, but must have confused the operating hours I saw online with another library (most like the neigboring Mid-Manhattan Library branch). By the time I got my card and got settled down with the books, it was probably around 6:30pm. But my research had to cut to an unexpected stop, when they shut down the lights at 7:45pm.

As far as the Familias Dominicanas Collection is concerned; I returned and spent most of the day Saturday continuing my research, and was able to scan thru 6 out the 7 volumes of genealogical records (in addition to other Dominican genealogical resources available), which btw are very exhaustive and worthwhile, with records spanning between the 16th and 19th centures. I however didn't have any luck in finding an ancestor. My guess is that the records contained in these volumes concentrated on residents living in the capital region of Santo Domingo. And since practically all of my ancestors lived in the Cibao (at least as early as the beginning of the 19th century), I'm basically out of luck as far as Familias Dominicanas is concerned. The only downside I find these records is that they rarely contain any specific location. Volume 37-42, which covers the surnames beginning with the letters D-G, is the volume that appears to missing since sometime in Feb-13. I guess maybe a comprade of our might have accidently walked out with it, lol. A librarian I spoke with was able to locate another copy of this volume in NYU and Columbia Universities and granted me a 2-wk pass to thier libraries so I can get access to the missing volume.

Another notewothly selection would probably be Mas Familias Dominicanas - Ana Concepcion, which essentially briefly records the probable names of the first couple with specific surname to settle in a specific town (sorted by surname). This work essentially could be used as a quick referece and secondary source to Familias Dominicanas which it practically feeds off of.

I'm planning to return to the library once again on Saturday and finish looking at a couple of other resources. Btw in the libraries' first floor at least; there's a room dedicated specifically dedically to genealogical research which also provides free access to Ancestry.com records which is also convenient.

If your interested in pursuing in-depth historical/genealogical research, the Schwarzman Library is the place to be.

Thanks again!

Hasta luego...

Great! That's just how I started researching. Happy Hunting!

Go to this link:

http://nypl.bibliocommons.com/item/show/10695318052_familias...

Note The 9 volumes of Familias Dominicanas are not of equal thickness, and the library bound the 9 into 7 tomes. The left margin lists the location (Shwartzman, Room 315). In the center of the page, where it lists Details, Full Record, Imprint, Series, etc -- go down to More and press the arrow, and you will see the Call Number and the volumes, which are oddly numbered "22" "25" "37" etc. you may have to request them all if the librarian cannot identify which is the H-LL volume, plus whichever other one you wish to examine. When in doubt request them all. It may take 20-25 minutes for your books to arrive.

upon entering the building, first check all packages, briefcase, coat, etc in the main floor coat room, and only take your cell phone, Ipad or laptop, pencil, paper or index cards, keys, wallet and money. Go upstairs to room 315 by elevator or stairs (it's more like a 6 floor climb because of the high ceilings).

The building itself and most every painting or decoration in it is museum quality, and they want to protect everything from damage. Books cannot be removed, only examined and photocopied.

The receptionist in 315 will direct you to a computer terminal to fill out a request slip for each book or volume, including book title, etc and the all important Call Number of each item, plus where to turn in the request slips and where to wait for the books you want to examine. There is an area with photocopiers for you to print the pages you want (get a card and put some money on it at card machine, like at Staples.

Good luck!

I'm not sure what certifications you must acquire in order to oficially become a genealogist, but in my book you are.
You've actually sparked a whole series of questions which I'll probably save for some other time, since they kind of go beyond the scope of this thread. Since I've opted not to become a subscriber till I observe some more documents at familysearch, I can't contact you directly.
Those sources at that Library (conveniently located by Grand Central) sounds pretty cool!
Hi Cero,
In answer to your questions, genealogy is my hobby. I've done research in the US, DR and Spain. I did contribute to the 9 generations Henriquez report (adding a previously unknown branch of the Francisco Henriquez y Carvajal's descendants in France). In my reply to Leonardo on this message board, I mentioned being an Henriquez descendant, my grandfather was Noel's great grandson. Noel's son, Daniel Henriquez y Carvajal was my grandfather's grandfather.

I lived in NYC for most of my life, and cocontributed volumes of five Dominican genealogy works to the NY Public Library's Research Library at 5th Ave and 42nd Street in Manhattan. These included all volumes of the out of print "Familias Dominicanas" by Carlos Larrazabal Blanco (the definitive DR genealogy work), that lists family names and family members generation by generation. The surnames are listed alphabetically. That way anyone in the NY metropolitan area who is researching their family can just go to the big library on 42nd and Fifth (with the stone lions) and examine and photocopy the pages that list their ancestors. How cool is that?

Hey Jacqueline,

Yes, once again your right on the money, as far as Ana is concerned (your pretty good at this, lol). Are you a genealogist, by chance? I take it that your probably 'not' not even a descendent of the Henriquez, am I right?

Ana is the last of Sinforosa's siblings that I've incoporated in my tree, so far. I didn't mention her before because I haven't found her approx. birth year or birth place yet.

As far a as siblings marrying siblings, I could personally testify to how gentically close the offsprings must be, because a little further down the Santos/Henriquez line I find my aunt and my grand-uncle marrying siblings as well and noticed how remarkably close one of their offsprings look.

Thanks for the clarification on Noel's case. That the site containing that 9 generational report appears to be under construction, and I'm not being aloud to register. Were/are you by chance of member of that Dominican genealogical site?

And to answer your question, I'm from the New York metro area. I actually have relatives (aunts and cousins) living in San Jaun area (Canovanas I believe).

Thanks again...

zeroabsoluto

Hi Cero,
Here's another one for you:
Ana Juaquina Henriquez is also Sinforosa's sister, she married Sinforosa's brother in law Francisco De Los Santos, son of Elias De Los Santos and Andrea Cabrera, on 14 March 1882 in Altamira.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLL8-7L9

Two sisters marrying two brothers was very common in the 19th century. The two sets of offspring were double first cousins (first cousins on both sides of the family) and genetically very very close.

I agree about the different spellings of Henriquez, those variations in spelling and mispellings were all too common back then.

On the matter of Noel's being Dutch, those born in Dutch islands like Curaçao were Dutch citizens and travelled with Dutch passports. Sandy de Marchena and Josette Goldish, who are genealogists from Curaçao, looked in the Sephardi registers of the island, and did not find a birth record for Noel (who was born on a Dec. 25th) among the island's Jewish temple records, which leads one to conclude that his mother was not Jewish. Even the name Noel (Christmas in French) is another big indicator that his mother was not Jewish, therefore he would not be considered Jewish.

On the 9 generations of the descendants of David Henriquez (Noel's grandfather), it is a family report compiled about 5 years ago by Dominican genealogists for the Proyecto Genealogico Raices de Quisqueya, directed by Marcos H. Hernandez Brea in DR.

What city do you live in? I am in San Juan, PR.

Hi Jacqueline,

Thanks for your input!
That is indeed my gg-grandmother's marriage certificate which I ultimately came across after discovering familysearch about a year ago. So far, I've practically observed all the documents in contained in the municipality of Altamira (which date back to 1877), where a good portion of my ancestral (abt 25%) roots lie (at least as early as the early 19th century). Now as far as the Henriquez in my family are concerned, I've only been able to reach Isabel Henriquez, who was Sinforosa's mother and my ggg-grandmother as that marriage certificate indicates. I've also been able to find the names of a few of who I believe to be Sinforosa's older siblings (e.d. Teolinda, Petronila & Jose Silverio), all of whom appear to be natives of either Puerto Plata or Santiago. Which leads me to believe that that my Henriquez family probably originated from either Puerto Plata or Santiago. I've already started doing research in Puerto Plata and Santiago, but I'm still stuck with Isabel, of whom I know little about (other than that she likely passed away in Altamira sometime after the turn of the 20th century). Since Isabel, appears to never have been married, it makes things a little harder.

On a different note, the apparent missing z in Henriquez, I believe is not of much significance, and just a slight variation of the same name. In fact in older documents a more common variation of the name I've found in my research is Enrique. As you could imagine names weren't particularly standardized, considering the high iliteracy rates at the time. Officials would probably just spell out the names phonetically.
I would agree that there were probably many Henriquez's living in DR at during this period, and I'm not necesarily suggesting my Henriquez family has a relatively near correlation with Noel Henriquez per say. But considering that Henriquez is probably not that popular of a name, I still think that Noel's ancestral roots could potentially hold some clues to my Henriquez roota. I'm still a little puzzled about Noel's Dutch roots. I think it was Leonardo in his post that noted that Noel was a native Dutch or something along those lines. I think that being a native Dutch was just an anomally, and most Henriquez roots probably come from Spain.

Anyhow, Jacqueline, no need to respond to what I've discussed above (that is unless you come across some vital information), but you mentioned a 9 generational report. Is that an actually publicized report or are you referring to a family tree?

Thanks again for your help...

zeroabsoluto

Hi Cero,

I didn't find Sinforosa in the 9 generation report, descendants of David Henriquez (Noel's grandfather). Bear in mind that there are several unrelated Henriquez families in DR.

However, the good news is that "Sinforosa Henrique" (no Z)'s Altamira 1878 marriage record IS listed on the familysearch website:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLL8-W2G

Good luck with your investigation!
Hi maerose285,

I just bumped into these postings on the Henriquez family, which I'm currently reasearching as well since one of gg-grandmothers was named Sinforosa Henriquez (b. abt 1860). I'm still not quite sure about what her birth town was but it was probably either Puerto Plata or Santiago or perhaps Altamira, Puerto Plata where I know she had her kids and settled down and passed. So I too am hoping this messagge reaches to you or maybe someone else (e.g. Leonardo) that may hold some additional pieces of information regarding the Henriquez. According to Leonardo's posting Noel Henriquez was a native Dutch. Does that essentially mean that all Henriquez' are native Dutch? That could potentially explain why 10% of my ancestral roots come from the Nordics according my AncestryDNA results I recently got.

Ciao,

ceroabsoluto

Keturah Krause and her son Ira Sanberg left St. Croix in 1907. We lose Keturah's trail in 1924 in Belgium and Ira lived, married and died in Denmark. As far as we know Keturah was black and Ira was half black and half white. Apparently Denmark did not have the prejudice that was so prevalent in the USA at that time.

Sincerely,
Paul
North Carolina, USA

Re: American citizenship

From my understanding, based on conversations with my parents, not all of the citizens were in favor of the sale. Since most of the population was black, and free many feared that they would be enslaved as the African American were, even King Christian was reluctant to let his 'children' endure that type of life. I believe Booker T. Washington was encouraged to give his approval.
The citizens were given the choise to become american or to remain Danish citizens, and many did, both of my parents kept their Danish citizenship.
After the sale, the Dept of the Interior was the governing body of the islands, and the island was occupied by the navy, which was the reason for the sale, as a block to Germany and Russia.
My dad told me , and it is evident in the 1917/1920 census that most of the sailors were from the south, and tried to treat the natives as they did in the south, like making natives stef off the sidewalk when they were walking down the street, to be met with "no one moves me off the King's sidewalk", or the brawls between the sailors and the citizens. There was even an attempt to apease (sp) the citizens by appointing a Black Governor, Hasting out of the midwest, He was soon ran out.
All this happened while the US tried to figute out what to do with this large population of Blacks that would not be cowed, they eventually granted them citizenship and forgot about them.
As to how it was handled by the citizens, they were Virgin Islanders, and that was all there was to that, It didn't matter who owned the islands, things continued as they were.

Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the US in 1917 and yet the information that I found said that the Virgin Islanders were granted US citizenship by Congress in 1927. How was citizenship of the residents and people born in the islands handled during that ten year period? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Sincerely,
Paul

Can you tell me where this is from? It appears to be a church record of baptisms, but I don't know of a church that kept records in French in St Thomas. This was more common in Catholic churches of other islands, like St Lucia.

Hi!

I'm searching for the background/parents of Mary Wells, who married Richard Tuite who was born in about 1765.
The Smith Letter 1841

Transcribed – 1 June 2003 by TxLady59

The letter below was written by Mr. David Smith, who was living on St Vincent Island in the West Indies in 1841. It was addressed to his brother William Smith who was studying Engineering and Mechanical Drawing in Glasgow Scotland.

The letter has been in my family for over 150 yrs. I have always been told that William, Andrew, David and John were cousins of my Thomas relatives – maybe my ggg Grandfather Joseph D. Thomas or his father. If any one knows this Smith family or how they are related to Joseph D. Thomas from Ohio I would be very grateful.
People and places mentioned in this letter:

Andrew – probably David and William’s brother
Johny – probably another brother
LeGall Graham & Co – Solicitors, St Vincent Island
James Drummond
St Vincent Island – West Indies
Saint Thomas Island - West Indies
Cooks Establishment, Glasgow Scotland
Glasgow Scotland
New South Wales – Australia
Cummock Scotland – not stated whether Old or New
Malta – Maltese Islands
Washington D.C.
Barbados
Letter Addressed to Cook and Co Engineers

If the letter is difficult to read, please remember that people talked and spelled very different then and many were illiterate, though I do believe the Smith Brothers had more than the average schooling. I have transcribed the letter exactly as written with the grammar and spelling intact. The envelope was sealed with wax, which is missing from the back now, but was still there when I was a child.

Letter is addressed to: Mr William Smith
Care of Messrs Cook & Comp
Engineers
Glasgow
St Vincent, 20th April 1841

Dear Willie

I duly received your esteemed favor under date 29th January last which I was happy to observe you were happy with Cooks Establishment pretty well and I hope you may soon acquire a complete knowledge of the Business as well as that of Mechanical Drawing. I need scarcely say I shall have much pleasure in appreciating the small amount (which I intended sending you for the purpose of learning drawing) in the way which you have judiciously pointed out; although in promising you my assistance I had no intention of neglecting my Father in consequence in short we are all indebted to him far above which money can every repay and whenever I can afford to render any little assistance to him I shall do so with much pleasure, in the meantime however I have not so much past me. My account has been overdrawn for some time past in consequence of having remitted a small sum to assist Andrew when he left which together with the £5 which I sent you and £20 borrowed from Johny when I left, makes altogether about £40 sent home by me during the two years I have been here and considering how expensive clothes were here etc. and but a small salary to meet all claims I look upon myself as having done pretty well – in a month or two I espect to be able to send about £10 and so long as I am able I shall continue to send a small amount occasionally.

As regards James Drummonds enquiry respecting a market here for Snuff Boxes etc. I have given if my best consideration and I’m really at a loss to give a decided opinion on the subject – snuff boxes would not sell, perhaps a few Segar Cases might, and Card Cases, Ladies Work Boxes and Dresing Cases but I could not recommend him to send them in chance as he would run a considerable risk – if however he will send me the following I will send the cost thereof and as I shall then have a specimen of the Cummock Boxes in my possession I may perhaps be able to procure an order for some, in this way he will not run risk and if I do not succeed in getting an order for some why there is not harm done – say a neat dresing case, a Ladies work Box, if such things are made, and 3 Segar Cases, 3 snuff boxes and 2 or 3 Card Cases. I ???? Card Cases for containing two to four packs of Cards – I wish them all of different patterns in order that I may have a fair specimen.

You appear very anxious to leave Glasgow notwithstanding that you are well pleased with your situation nor I think you would be doing very wrong to leave Glasgow sooner than a year or so, the short time you have been with Cooks cannot have offered you the means of acquiring a sufficient knowledge of the Business to enable you to get on elsewhere and I confes I cannot see the good of kicking about until you are master of your trade, if you will be guided by my advise I would recommend you to persevere on for some time yet at Cooks and by and by there will surely be some way in getting on for yourself. Andrew seems very much against advising you to come out to the West Indies and after all perhaps it would be better not to think of it as in this climate you would feel the Business of an Engineer a very oppressive one and would very frequently be exposed to the sun – however if you are inclined to try your luck by and bye I shall not prevent you, but if you could get out to New South Wales perhaps it would be much better for you. I have requested Andrew to write you giving his opinion in the subject.

I cannot help remarking the very bad spelling contained in the your letter to me, bad writing is excusable but both your writing and spelling might be much improved if you would only bestow a little more pains, I am sure you might have been much better in the respect considering the opportunities which you have had – in fact I have never met with worse spelling in my life, even the very smallest words you cannot spel correct for instance the word go is spelled gow. Could any thing be more ridiculous - I often spoke to you on this subject when in Cummock and I must tell you plainly that if you need never think of coming out to the West Indies unless you can do better in that respect for these things are just as necessary as a knowledge of Mechanical Drawing, and Engineering itself – you need not get offended at me for these remarks, as they are given with the best intention and I would recommend your particular attention to them once more.

The 93rd Regt. has just arrived here from Malta and I assure you the fine appearance of the kilts are astonishing the natives not a little – I am told a Highland Regt. has not been stationed here for the last 20 years and of course it is a very great novelty in this quarter. I never had the pleasure of witnessing one before so that is likewise a pleasure to me.

We are all looking out for a War with the Yankees – by the last arrival from America we had intelligence of the British Minister at Washington having demanded a pass-port and left for England and this news has since been confirmed by way of Saint Thomas – if a War should place I espect we will see some glorious scenes amongst these Islands – Barbados is the head quarters and of course all the ???? will be taken in there.

I am happy to say a good crop of Sugar this year and the Laborers are much improved.

Pray write me soon – Andrew joins me in Kindest Compliment while I remain

My dear Willie
Your affect. Bro
David Smith

Please address my letters in the future
Mr. David Smith
Messrs LeGall Graham & Co
Saint Vincent
W. I.
A burgher brief is a business licenses. Those records are also available at the St. Croix Landmarks Society Library at Estate Whim. Here is an article that can give you some info about the data base that makes it easy to locate information.

http://www.stjohnhistoricalsociety.org/Articles/AfricanRoots...

You may also Google African Roots Project to get updated information. That data base was launched in July 2009. It is also available at the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted.
