Dear Ms. Diaz Owen - unfortunately I do not have my books with me to actually seach for the Victoria family history - if my memory serves me correctly however I think they are descended from a town in Spain called Victoria. Victoria is indeed a Sephardic family name. There was a Gaspar de Vittoria in 1715 who lived in England and was caught by the Inquisition while doing business in Spain, I do indeed remember reading about Alexander or Alejandro Victoria who came to SD from Haiti where they had a plantation - I seem to remember that they maintained Jewish connections as late as 1840 - but it is quite possible that they had deeper roots in the New World - there was a Jew with the surname Victoria arrested by the inquisition in Mexico in the 17th century
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/7016/Jews2.htm#...In the most recent history of the Jews of the Virgin Islands by Judah Cohen he does not list anyone with the name Victoria. Have you tried contact the French Jewish archives? I also would contact the American Jewish Archives. As for Own there were Jews with the name Van Oven in England including a famous translator.
