Hi Malcolm,
I am pleased to hear that you may have turned up information that might help you breakthrough your wall. I suggest you call the British National Archives and find out if they hold copies of the Trinidad Gazette or the Trinidad Royal Gazette. If they do, you may want to take a few days and go down there to look for a probate announcement of some kind because now, you have a date of death and a little more information to go on. You might want to also ask if they have records of announcements regarding property tax arrears.
The next best thing that you may be able to do is to go to Trinidad and maybe hire a search clerk to look into property records for that time while you make good use of your own personal time by going to the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago and asking for every possible record that can be helpful.
If you chose to do the latter, I have to warn you that there is not a consistent way of handling records in T&T in some counties or city corporations, the records have been sent on to the National Archives whereas others are housed in the county/city corporations and are not as easily accessible. For some places, you have to jump through hoops of red tape, and in others, you simply have to ask.
I hope that you do get more information that would make a trip to Trinidad and Tobago worth your while. Because I believe that once there, you may make many more breakthroughs and perhaps of more significance.
Joanne
