Familia Alago from Utuado

Hi,
I'm looking for the origins of the Alago surname.
My family is from barrio Caniaco in Utuado, Puerto Rico.
It's a rare surname and I believe that originally the last name was Albarrán Y Lago but somehow it ended up on the 1920 census as Alago.
My great grandfathers name was Jesus Albarrán Y Lago and his wife was Juana Vélez Y Ayala De Albarrán.
They appear on the 1910 census but Jesus disappears before 1920 and I have no death records or oral history to go on as to what happened to him or an explanation of why the surname was changed.
I believe his mother was Ana Lago Y Mendez abt 1830, and his siblings are:
Natividad Albarrán Y Alago 1869
Rosa Albarrán Y Alago 1872
Carmelo Albarrán Y Alago 1888

Jesus Albarrán´s children with Juana Vélez Y Ayala were:
Eduardo Alago Y Vélez 1902
Ramona Alago Y Vélez 1909 (died in infancy?)
Juan Alago Y Vélez 1910

Juan Alago Y Vélez
Wife: Monserrate Gonzalez Y Andujar
Children: Arcelia "Chin" Alago Y Gonzalez 1936
Juan Esteban Alago Y Gonzalez 1938
Confesor Heriberto Alago Y Gonzalez 1940
Anibal Alago Y Gonzalez 1942
Efrain Alago Y Gonzalez 1943
Margarita Olga "Goly" Alago Y Gonzalez
Carmen Betzaida "LaLa" Alago Y Gonzalez
Iris Marylin Alago Y Gonzalez
Natividad Alago Y Gonzalez (died in infancy)

Please let me know if you have any information.
Thanks, Maria

Thank you very much for the information.

I will call them today and see what I can find out. I am so thankful that you gave me this gold nugget of information.

I am surprised though that Ancestry did not tell me anyone responded to my thread. I stumbled across this inquiry I wrote.

But, it was a good stumble nonetheless. Thank you.

Look up how Puerto Rico's Department of Health and follow the instructions below. However, I do highly suggest going to Puerto Rico yourself and doing research through their libraries and records department.

Department of Health, Demographic Registrar:
Here is a list of offices located in the various municipalities holding birth, marriage and other vital records. There are no governmental records listing such events prior to 1885 when the task of official vital record keeping was made a governmental function. Before that date, the Catholic parish churches of the respective municipalities of Puerto Rico were the official originators and repositories of these records.
The procedure for requesting abstracts of any of these official government records is as follows:
If the event happened before July 22, 1931, your request for a vital record should be made to the Demographic Registrar office in the municipality where the person resided at the time. (See list below)
If event occurred after July 22 your request should go to:

Departamento de Salud, Registro Demografico
PO Box 11854, San Juan, PR 00910

Your request for a document must include:

1. A money order of $5.00 for each record made to the order of Secretary of the Treasury of Puerto Rico.

2. The full and complete name and surnames of the person whose record you want.

3 Your relationship to that person and why you want the document.

4. Copy of your ID, preferably a drivers license, a passport or other document that has a photo and lists your place of birth.

5. A stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Click on to the website below for list of Demographic Registrars of Puerto Rico

The best and mostly only way to retrieve records beyond these census is by visiting the town hall in Utuado. I'm sure if we can get enough support, we can ask for Utuado to make records electronically available. I believe now you can just send them a letter asking for records or even calling to see if they have any records.

I hope this has been some help.

Good luck to you in your search!

-Lisa

I am looking for information on the father and mother of Maria Monserrate MarcAntoniz(o) from Utuado, PR. She was born in the late 1800 and I believe her father was Antonio Marcantonio from Corsica, France. I believe he came to PR during the large migration of Corsicans to PR in the mid to late 1800s.

Does anyone have any family information about Antonio or his wife and any father history back beyond him? What about any details of the Marcantonio family back in Corsica and how he is connected to them.

Any information would be so much appreciated.

I have so far been able to find him in the 1910, 1920 census but I can not got further back. Would you happen to know how I can find further information on him and my family?
Hi Lisa, I got a reply from somebody else and they told me to try and get information from LDS History Center. They also mentioned something about a church by the name of Nuestra Señora de Monserrate in Jayuya, I believe. I think I'm going to take a trip to Puerto Rico eventually also to get to the bottom of this. The mos intriguing and frustrating part is that I didn't know we were Laureano!

I already have a trip lined up for this in December.

Thank you for replying to me. I'm going to try your suggestions and see what I can find. I also know that my grandfather was in the military in a war just prior to World War I and there is no information on that either. The thing that struck me the most was this Laureano last name. We never knew this, so that is why I'm trying to get to the bottom of it. Thanks again. Oh, by the way, I'm bilingual and I can also read Spanish.

Evelyn

Hi

My family is from Utuado. The 1899 Census was done by the US Dept. of War. I reviewed this Census at the LDS History Center in Salt Lake City. I think there is a copy at the National Archives, however, this census was more of a statistical census and very few names appear on it. It was not a Census like the 1910, etc. about the people. In 1899, Jayuya was part of Utuado, and the church at that time was Nuestra Señora de Monserrate. That is where I found some of my family. Those records unfortunately, have not been translated and you can order them from the LDS History Center near you or, as I did, in Salt Lake City. My family name is Luis and I found it spelled Lino in the 1910 Census, so check all spellings. Also when you bring up a family name on the census, go to the actual record and review who lived around them. Scan the pages of the original census for family nearby.

Good Luck
Marti

Hi Lisa, I have a couple of questions re: Utuado. My father and his family was from there. I can't get much information about my grandfather's family. His name was Lino Sanchez y Laureano. I just found out about the Laureano part when I joined Ancestry. I have no idea who his parents were. The people that are still living say he never talked about them or they don't remember! He was born in 1889 or about. In 1910 I found someone by the name of Lino Sanchez as a border, no parents. Are you familiar with a 1901 census and was Utuado included? The 1899 census by household was supposedly destroyed. This is very frustrating. Not much information on Puerto Rico.

Hi, My father was from Utuado. I'm having difficulties finding his father's parents. My grandfather's name, as I knew him, was Lino Sanchez. However, when I started to do my research I found that he listed himself as Lino Laureano y Sanchez in the 1920 census, and Lino Sanchez Laureano in WWI Draft card. None of the children that are still living understand this! Because of the history of Puerto Rico and the United States, I am stuck! Nobody can find the census of 1899 that was taken by household of Puerto Rico by the U. S. and I even contacted Spain and they were of very little help! Ancestry has limited information on Puerto Rico! Can you help? Evelyn P.S. My grandfather was born about 1889.

Hi,

Familysearch has PR civil records online that include Utuado. You probably would be able to find your grandparents' marriage record as well as some of the kids that were born up to 1931. There are no birth records after 1931 due to privacy restrictions, I'm guessing. The only thing with familysearch is that you have to search (browse) for your images (the images are not indexed). I have had great success finding a lot of the family records online through this website. here is the link that should take you right to the Utuado section:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A...

Otherwise, just go to familysearch, then to records available and then to PR civil registrations. There is a PR Catholic church records, but Utuado is not included.

Cathy
Cathy
