After digging a little further, I found (in the 1940 census) who I believe to be my grandfather, Magdaleno Vasquez Cortez listed as "Magdaleno Vázguez y Cortés". It states him being born in Hato Viejo, Arecibo, Puerto Rico in 1931. His parents were Elias Vázguez b.1889 and Herminia Cortés de Vázquez b.1901. Including my grandfather, they had 6 children; sons Santos b.1918, Dionisio b.1919, and Magdaleno b.1931 & daughters Encarnación b.1930, Milagros b.1933, and Andrea b.1934...all 6 children's last names were listed as Vázguez y Cortés. They are believed to have had a house guest of sorts, maybe a family member. Her name was Daniela Cortés b.1920. Elias, Santos, and Dionisio's occupations were listed as bracero/finca-cana (bracero = laborer/finca = farm or estate). If anyone out there has any information on how to contact any surviving relatives of any of these people, it would be greatly appreciated. For what ever reasons the family became separated over the years, I really would love to make a connection with my family... Thank you & God bless!!!
Hi Carol!

Yes, I have tried it, and I was able to locate a make with my grandfather's name... But his last name was spelled "Vázguez y Cortes". I am hoping that it is the correct family. Here is how I found them listed:

*Head of house hold/jefe:
Elias Vázguez b.1889

*Spouse/esposa:
Herminia Cortes de Vázquez b.1901

*Sons/hijos:
Santos Vázguez y Cortes b.1918
Dionisio Vázguez y Cortes b.1919
Magdaleno Vázguez y Cortes b.1931
(my grandfather)

*Daughters/hijas
Encarnación Vázguez y Cortes b.1930
Milagros Vázguez y Cortes b.1933
Andrea Vázguez y Cortes b.1934

*House guest/alojada:
Daniela Cortes b.1920

Elias, Santos, and Dionisio's occupation was listed as:
Bracero (laborer)/finca-cana (farm/estate)

If anyone has information about these people or their surviving relatives, please reply to this post or email me directly at: n.vasquez11@yahoo.com

Hi, I am searching for my father's family. His name is Nieves Alberto Vega born 1919 in Ponce Puerto Rico. His mother name is Maria Luisa Almodovar, his father Roman Vega y Garcia On his Birth Certificate it states that Roman's parents are Jose Maria Vega y Madera, and Juana Ramona Garcia.
Maria's mother name is Francisca Almodovar. On my fathers Baptism Certificate for grandmother (it is hard to read) but it looks like Torres y Almodovar and witness, Hipolito Vega, Candia Gonzales
Maria also had a son (my fathers half brother). Luis Carmelo Martinez, born 1909 died 1971. Luis lived with a woman name Suncha in Ponce PR, Suncha moved to Bronx New York with their children: Milagra, Santa, and Peter who was killed in NY. Luis second wife was Lucy.
Maria Almodovar died in the 1920s. Roman had a daughter name Paula Vega after Maria's death. I am interested in finding more information on Maria Luisa Almodovar, and Francisca Almodovar
I look forword to hearing from anyone related or familiar with this family

Hi,
Not researching this name but I thought I would give you something to think about.
Back in the day they spelled Surnames and First names as it sounded to them as some were Iliterate and used the SOUNDEX method. Some people where not all that in the alphabet so if it sounded with and "S" they would write with an "S" and if it sounded with the "C" they would write it as that. EX. I search Gimenez. It started with the "X"imenez then went to the "J"imenez then ended with the "G"imenez. I have a friend theat her research name is Hibell. We have found it with Ibel,Jivel,Givel,Hibel and HIBELL. So when you research search under both. Cifre and Sifre. You would be amazed at what you might find. Also if you did not know, go to this link.............https://familysearch.org/search, then scroll to Carribean and Central south America, then to Puerto Rico and click. It has three options....
Puerto Rico, Catholic Church Records, 1645-1969
Puerto Rico, Civil Registration, 1836-2001
Puerto Rico, Records of Foreign Residents, 1815-1845
Luckyly for you Rio Piedras is under both Catholic and Civil. In there you can view images of TOMOS/BOOKS.
Some tomos have the index in them either the front of the Book or the back of the book. You may also check to see if there are separate indexes for all the Books.
Belive me it is tedious work untill you learn it but the payoff is well worth it when you find your ancestors original hand written records. I have searched mine all the way to 1750. Start with the census on Ancestry to see where your ancestor lived last then go to this site in the Civil and work backwards. When you find these records they are full of Information. EX: Death records depending on the year will tell you how many children was in the marriage when they died and if there was a will or not. Birth records contain names of both sets of Grandparents. Marriage records contain both sets of parents and approximate birth dates of the persons getting married and also where they where from. I am telling you it is well worth the time spent.
In the Book of Estela Cire Loubriel
La Formacion del Pueblo Puertoriqueño, La contribucion de los Catalanes,Balearicos y Valencianos is the following.

Sifre,Jaime. Natural de Palma Mallorca; llega a Puerto Rico alrededor de 1809;casado, de 35 años de edad, comerciante y vecino de Aguadilla en 1826. ( Testigo de Manuel Jose Lisboa en su solicitud de naturalizacion.) Archivos Nacionales,Washington DC G. 186,Entrada Cajas 103 y 105 y E. 21 caja 54.
Happy hunting!
Carol

thank you who ever you are, found my grandmother & mother on the list plus my aunt. Never saw so many Sifres and I have been looking for many years.

My other last surname was easy (Arcelay) because of Maria Luisa Arcelay who was famous in Puerto Rico.

So thank you for the list, so now I know that there are more Sifres in the world.

Sifre appears in the Romanian Jewish archives. There's a historical records list here: https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&a...

We are from Rio Piedras but been told that Sifre is Jewish even if they raised us as Catholics. NOT doing any research on Sifre it is a dead end of a surname. So if any one has info just post and I am sure I will somehow get it from the board.

Your Grandfather (Andres Troche) was brother of my Great-grandmother (Aurelia Troche) from my mothers side. Aurelia had a daughter named Lucia Quiros (our Grandmother) who was cousin to your father (Confesor Troche). So technically our grandma was your second cousin. So if we are correct you would be somewhere like our 4th cousin.

We just started to form our family history. So far we have Maria Luisa Troche Caraballo's children who were Andres, Domingo, Luis, Carmen and Aurelia.

If you have any names that may help us from the Troche side of the family, please email me.

Thanks

I don't have any info on who his parents were or if he had ant siblings..although, I recall someone mentioning that he may have had a brother. The only thing I do know is that his family allegedly shunned him for marrying a "dark skinned" puerto rican woman (my grandmother).

Do not rely to much on the Familysearch.org search engine in itself. It is best if you look up the records yourself.
In Familysearch.org, go to Carribean Central and South America and click, then scroll to Puerto Rico.
It has three, Puerto Rico Catholic Church Records 1645-1969,Puerto Rico Civil Registration 1836-2001 and Puerto Rico Foreign Residents 1815-1845. They all for the most part have indexes of names. Some have a separate index others have the index in the first of the books/TOMOS others are in the back of the books/TOMOS and some have non at all which makes it more tedious but when you find your Ancestor it is overwhelming to see the actual written record.
Yes, search the census first for 1910 and 1920 see where your ancestors where living. In the records stated above they have all the towns specially in the civil wich is where your next step should be. From the civil records once you find a record it will tell you the town your Ancestors where from or came from then you will have to go back in to History to figure out what town was founded when or linked to first and from here you would be able to look up the Catholic Records. Somewhere I had read that in the 17?? can't remember, they needed to take a census of population and so all where ordered to be Baptised or Confirmation as this was the only way they saw for all the Puerto Rico Population to be counted. I have taken mine so far as far as the 1700 and I am still on the hunt.
Take time and read this free book. It really helps.

http://net.lib.byu.edu/fslab/researchoutlines/LatinAmerica/P...

Happy Hunting
Carol

Well what I did to start was looking into the PR Census. You can get the data of the census in ancestry or other places. In my case I went to the census of 1920 to look for my grandfather's family. I had to read a lot of entries, but finally I found it. Then I went to the census of 1910 to see if there were more family members alive. For example maybe grand parent was alive in the 1910s but died afterwards. He/she will be in the 1910 data, but not in the 1920s. For Puerto Rico there is data for 1910-1940. Before that because we were under the Spanish government the data came from church archives and birth registration. You can find those with in familysearch.org. They are still entering the birth registration from Puerto Rico into their data. So my advice for you start from your parents backwards looking for the trail, ask for siblings of your grandparents, it would be very helpful. Feel free to contact me at kikodpr@gmail.com if you have questions.

Thank you for responding back so soon. I thought the guy you were referring to would be someone other that me grandfather, however, I was hoping he might be his father or grandfather. I am at a stand still and was wonderin if you or anyone can help me find a link to my family. I am very new to this... What type references do you use besides these kind of sites?
