Robert Henry ROMNEY, b. St. Maarten ~1820

I found a death noticed published in the Kingston, Jamaica Gleaner (the daily newspaper) in 1899 about my great-great-grandfather's father, Robert Henry Romney. (It was published in Jamaica because his son, Ernest Nanton Romney, lived in Kingston.) The notice was republished from the St. Vincent Sentry and said that Robert Henry Romney was a native of St. Maarten (Dutch side) and came to St. Vincent in 1812 (I think--it was hard to read the third numeral) and was a contractor with the Army and Navy and in his later years, he ran the Bodega Hotel. It said he was almost 80 years old when he died, putting his birth around 1820. I'm searching for any information about him that I can find. So far I only have this newspaper death notice and an entry in a book of mercantile & tradesmen in Central America and the Caribbean that lists him as owning an "ice and billiards saloon" on St. Vincent in 1888. Those things are definite. I don't know who he married, how many children they had, why he went from St. Maarten to St. Vincent, who his parents were, or anything else.

I have a theory that he married a woman whose maiden name was probably Nanton, because Nanton is a family name and this is a likely place where I could see it coming into the tree. But that's just a theory. I found a Nanton family pedigree from Antigua, but it didn't yield anything helpful/concrete.

His son was named Ernest Nanton Romney. I don't know if he had more than one child. And I can't find any references to the Bodega Hotel at all.

Any information that might be helpful would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Kathy. Thank you so much for responding! I would LOVE to see some pictures. I dont have any of Clifton, his wife and family or any other of his family members. I am such a sucker for old pictures. They make the people in the tree come alive. My email address is Jazzimark1155@yahoo.com. Just please let me know in the email who you are. I dont like opening mail from people I dont know. Cant be too careful these days.
Cliftons wife Theckla Eversz was my g-g-g-grandfathers daughter. I have always been interested in Clifton and his wife because, from what I understand, they taught at a University and I read that they did a research paper together.
Thank you again for your response. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Very sincerely yours
Mark Evers
Clifton married my ggg-grandfathers daughter Theckla Wilhelmine Johanna Eversz. Theckla is my 2nd great grand aunt. I was wondering if you would like to compare notes.
Sincerely, Mark Evers

They sure do, Carty and McCarty are intertwined. Elijah Tyler married Mary Ester Lupee. They had 4 children together in St. John, NB; Fannie Delhi, Charles Elijah, Arthur Seymore and Clarence. Their marriage did not last and Mary married Clarence McCarty, and they in turn had more children; James, Harold, Clarence, Simson.

Fannie Delhi married Albert Carty in 1907 in St. John, NB, and they had many sons together. I have started a Carty Family tree in Ancestry.ca, and although it is not complete yet many of the names/dates are in there including the McCarty's.

Hi Cyril,
You can google dirctly on the title of the family tree no link necesary. There is another site titled "at the edge of the the horizon", Gosta Simmons. Which gives all cesusrecords of St.M, Saba and Statia since 1699.I've figured out the the Peterson route: 1680: StThomas to Saba, 1715:Saba to St.maarten. they assisted Gov. John Hodge of Anguilla in the war of Jenkinks ear in 1745 against the French and obtained lots of land from Simpsonbay to Marigot

Hi,

My paternal grandfather's mother's name was Henrietta Margaret Adeline Davis-Violenes (this is the spelling I've run into time and again, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's spelled incorrectly).

She was born on StMaarten on 1839, day and month unknown, and passed away on 21 Feb 1900.

Could she be the same person as your Henriette Margarette Davis/Violenus?

I have her as being married to Peter John Labega on 18th Dec 1870. This would ave made her about 40 or 41 at the time.

I have her mother's name as Catharine Henli (or Henly) Davis, father's identity unknown.

Is it possible she married my great grandfather at a later date?

Hi Jennifer,

My name is Cyril Irwin Labega, I was named after my father Cyril Irwin Labega, who was a son of Wlliam Frederick Augustus Labega, who in turn was a son of Pieter John Labega, who was a son of Isaak Labega.

Feel free to take a look at the family tree on my page.

My cousin Daphne van Schendel-Labega, who used to live in Holland, but from what I've heard is currently living in Curaçao has done a lot of research on the family.

I understand the Labega's originally came from Spain, where the surname was "de La Vega". The name became Labega due to an error made by an immigration official.

If you have any info on the family please let me know, as I'm highly interested in my family past.

I'm enclosing two links that might be helpful to you.
http://books.caribseek.com/Sint_Maarten/For_The_Love_Of_St_M...

http://books.caribseek.com/Sint_Maarten/For_The_Love_Of_St_M...

Regards,

Cyril I.
Still looking for information on the Matthew French family (originally from Ireland) who settled on island by the early 1700s, and were still there by the 1830s. Matthew was probably related to Eliza Cock who was married to a French. Particularly interested in Mary and Martha (ca. 1765), and Elisabeth and Anna Maria (ca. 1820s). The family also had ties to the French family who were merchants in Cadiz, Spain.

Since this information is for my PhD dissertation, any information is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Kathy
Hi, I am also researching a Marigot family of Morales. I went to St. Martin in 1978 and me a Mr. Vere (I think that was his name) Richardson who lived in Marigot. He had a son who was an artist (quite accomplished) He told me that his mother and my ex-husbands mother "name of "Flanders" were sisters. Since it is such a long time ago I am not sure I have the details correct. I remember going into his house above a store and seeing the pictures of the sisters as well as the paintings of his son who I think was named
Roland Richardson. I also attended an art show in NYC for his work. I see he has a website in St. Martin. I hope this helps. If you come across anything on the family of Georges Morales I would appreciate hearing about it.

Joan Morales

Yes they are but the documentation is proving elusive. Thomas Edward Carty was born in Anguilla and had many children with Isabella Hughs. Our ancestor (great grandfather) Albert James Carty was born in Saint Martins and ended up in New Brunswick where a new Carty line is living. It is so easy to track ancestors through the census records for Europe and North America, the Islands are proving to be more difficult. As with Thomas Edward we only know he was born there but have no dates. Anyway thanks for sharing your online book, it's amazing.
