Perhaps I can get a clue as to what my surname means in Arawak.

I believe Quirindongo is of Caiqueto (Caiquetio) indigenous origin. A native people who were in Curacao when the Spanish arrived. Alonso de Ojeda found the islands inhabited by Caiquetos, a tribe of peaceful Arawak Indians, who had fled Venezuela from a more blood thirsty tribe, the Caribs. But alas, I have no documentation other than the fact that a locality in Curacao bears the Kirindongo name and that no one seems to know what the name means. I also believe that the original name is is pronounced Gee Reen Dun Go all others are variations. I also believe that the QUIRINDONGO surname spelling originated in Curacao. And that after the Spanish found the island in 1499 they acculturated it between 1530-1634 under Spanish rule. Pedro Quirindongo (1730)unhappy with the Dutch ambience fled to Puerto Rico in 1794 and that a family member remained or someone possibly one of Pedro Quirindongo's children returned to Curacao and kept the Spanish variation alive.

In Curacao the surname Quirindongo, a Spanish-Papamiento variation is quite common and appears to be indigenous there because no variation exists anywhere else in the world except for the USA and Curacaoans in Holland. The variations Kirindongo, Kerindongo, Kirndongo, Kierindongo, Kierindoongo a combination Dutch-Papamiento are even more common than Quirindongo in Curacao. There is a locality (Sp. barrio) named Kirindongo Abou (Sp. abajo) in Curacao. The meaning of the surname will as in the case of many other surnames or localities that are indigenous remain unknown for the time being. No expert in Taino language or Curacao historian can be found at this point to give even a hint of a meaning to the surname Quirindongo which at first look with Pedro Quirindongo born 1730-or-1770? seems to be the original spelling but the pronunciation is kee rin(g) dun go or Gurindongo goo rin(g) dun go.There is also the surname Kwidama that fits the Arawak-Taino indigenous mold - koo wee dama. This is because the (2) two surnames are found in no other place in the world as USA and Holland where the surnames are also found both have Curacao connections.
