I am researching my grandfather and his family. My grandfather was born 1 November 1896 in Lamentin, Martinique. According to his birth certificate, his mother's name was Christine LISER, age 19 years. However, based on his various applications over the years, he listed his parents as Gaston Antonie LISER and Leontine PROSPERE. However, I believe these were his grandparents, who raised him. My grandftaher left Martinique at the age of 12 and moved to Panama. I have no idea whith whom he moved there, but he attended school, graduated, and worked in the U.S. commissary as a bookkeeper until he headed for the U.S. 22 May 1922.
Any ideas on how to research French records would be helpful. Thank you.

It was good to hear from you. Although I am a direct descendant of a Gederon, I know very little about the Gederon family.

Do you know anything about EUGENE GEDERON of Buenos Ayres? I am his great grand-daughter and I have been trying to find out more about him, where he came from, who his parents were, if he has sisters and brothers, and more about the Gederon family because I have very little information about them.

I certainly did not even know that there were Gederons in Erin so I would also appreciate hearing about your own lineage too. I have been trying for years to fill out this part of my family tree and would appreciate whatever information you can give me. I was beginning to believe that maybe the Gederons were no more.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I understand that they are in the process of digitising the Martinique records and that they should be on-line some time "soon". Keep an eye on this site http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/

Check also the LDS site www.familysearch.org to see what they have in their library for Martinique. They have many Martinique and Guadeloupe films. You can order them at your local LDS Family History Center.

For the census, I have several relatives who were described as being born in France, but who were actually born in the French Caribbean.

The "archives déparmentales" in Fort de France, capital city of Martinique, keep all the records. The list of the records is here : http://www2.cg972.fr/arch/html/inventaire%20registre%20origi...
They are not available on the internet, the only way to see them is to go there. They don't answer to individual requests.

General Information about Martinique Records

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on records kept for those that have lived in Martinique, or any territory in the Caribbean controlled or once controlled by France. Are these records held by France? What kind of records are kept for Martinque? How far back do they go?

I am looking for information on my G-G-Great Grandmother. Her name was Gabrielle Marie Duchemin (sometimes spelled Duchmen or Duchmin) and she was born in April 1836 somewhere in the French Caribbean, most likely Martinque. Her mother's name was possibly Gabrielle as well. Though I have no idea what her maiden name is, nor do I know the given name of her father. They were both mostly likely born in France and, according to family oral tradition, were Caribbean plantation owners. In 1847, Gabrielle (at age 11) sailed out of a port in Cuba to New Orleans with an Eleanor Labarriere (age 60.) She stayed for at least three years with the Laizer family on their plantation on the Left Bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Listed in the 1850 census along with the Laizers are both Gabrielle and a 60 year old male by the name of L.A. Labarriere.

There is an oral tradition in my family that Gabrielle was disinherited when she "married a 'damn yankee.'" Ironically her husband was a Confederate Officer. However, I have found that, on 3 Apr 1856, she married my G-G-Great Grandfather Lt. Polycarp Constant LeCorgne in Santiago, Cuba, arriving two weeks later back in New Orleans. This leads me to believe that at least part of the oral tradition is true. She and Polycarp probably traveled to Martinque to ask for her parents blessing. When they refused for whatever reason, the two returned back to New Orleans. I beleive that Cuba is a stopping point between Martinque and New Orleans, which is why the two passenger lists I've found her on (1847 and 1856) sailed from Cuba to New Orleans. I believe that while they were stopped in Cuba, they got married despite her parents wishes and she was then disinherited.

I would like to clearify Gabrielle's birth origin and if I can her parents' birth origins. I know she was born somewhere in the French Caribbean. Two Census records have her as being from Martinque, one from Guadeloupe, one from France. Records say her parents were from France. I would like to know who her parents and Grandparents were. (Were the Labarrieres somehow her grandparents?) And I'd like to know if she had any siblings.
Zerega shipping family - West Indies/Venezuela to NYC, Mexico...

Hi... before I write, let me just point out I am NOT related to this family... I just happened to grow up near Zerega Av. in the Bronx (named for the NYC shipping people who owned an estate here) AND then recently discovered the Zerega pasta company... GIVEN that coincidence, I looked into the surname a bit seeing as it is rather uncommon. I don't have any other insight besides what is posted here...

Anyway, Melania, I've seen several of your posts about this over the past few years. To summarize:
--------------------

from Melania Molero Pezzolla:
(email: melaniapezzolla AT yahooDOTcom)

"My great-grandfather was Francisco Zerega Ocio (b. 1856, married to Francisca Arce) - I was told he was governor or something in goverment in Baja California, Mexico;
his parents were Cecilio Zerega Virchez (b.ca.1826) and Rosario Vidal Ocio;
Cecilio's parents were Francisco Zerega & Elizabeth Virches/Virchez; this Francisco I think came from Venezuela"

ALSO:
"I am looking for info on a Francisco Zerega, he was a captain of a ship in the late 1700's to early 1800's. His wife was Magdelena Ostrom Oden. I need to know Thier childrens names and if Francisco had other siblings who also are from Martinique."

--------------------

Now, I think someone replied to you with this info already, but here it is anyway. It would defintely seem, from the info you've given, that you trace somehow through one of (the original) Francisco's "Mexican general" sons with his 2nd wife in Venezuela...

FYI: that original "Francisco", coming from Italy, was would almost certainly have been born "Francesco"...

http://books.google.com/books?id=AP0RAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA145
Makers of America Biographies of Leading Men of Thought and Action (Volume II) -- Edited by Leonard Wilson, 1916

"The (di Zerega) family was founded in the Americas by Francisco di Zerega, a native of Chiavari, Italy (***MY NOTE: in Liguria, near Genoa), who, coming in the latter part of the 18th century from Italy to the West Indies, married, first, Catherine Louise Drake, of Guadaloupe, and, after her death, appears to have settled in Caracas and married, second, a lady of that city, of Spanish descent."

Francisco had 3 children by his first wife Catherine Louise Drake:
(1) John, who married Mercedes, daughter of the Marquis de Tabor, lived in Caracas, died in Europe
(2) Albert, died in NY in 1823, unmarried
(3) Augustus, 1803-1888.... moved from Caracas to U.S. in 1831, became shipping magnate in NYC
owner of the Red Z clipper line; married Eliza Morch (Van Uytendaele, Baroness Von Bretton) in 1825 in St. Thomas, had 11 kids.

By his second wife, Francisco had two sons, both of whom became generals in the Mexican Army:
(4) Francisco -- lived to be Governor of the State of Vera Cruz and of the National Palace in Mexico City. He was a Thirty-third degree Mason and lived to 1880.
(5) Cecelio -- "fell in battle"

Good luck,
"hankycrankyspanky"
Searching For James Smith and Mary Ann Doret Origins

Could someone please direct me to where I may find information of passengers on ships arriving at the Colonies, specifically Grenada? My ggg-grandfather James Smith settled in Grenada in the West Indies circa the late 1700s and early 1800s. My ggg-grandmother Mary Ann Doret was, I believe from Martinique. His occupations included merchant, landowner, carpenter, and architect. To date we have not been able to ascertain from he came.

My ancestry is as follows:

-- James Smith; b. Jamaica
-- Frederick Kenneth Lloyd Smith; b. Grenada 1920; d. Florida 1998
-- Hubert Lloyd Smith; b. Grenada 1883; d. British Guiana (Guyana) 1954
-- William James Smith; b. Grenada 1841; d. Grenada 1912
-- James Smith, Jr.; b. Grenada 1815; d. Grenada 1876
-- James Smith; b. ? 17??; d. Grenada 1842.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks,

Jim Smith, Tampa

Dear all,

My grandfather supposedly came to Grenada in 1924-1925/6 via sea vessel. he was originally from Martinique. having once before located his relatives in the 1960's through a catholic priest in Beaulieu. he again lost contact.

i am trying to locate the family in martinique or at least my french roots

his name was Louis (Langdon) known but i remember him saying the surname was - sounds like Lorredon/ Loridon/ Lorridon.

While on the island of Grenada he managed to be united with a 1st cousin of his from his uncle who had immigrated to Grenada and had a child on the island, by the name of Octillia (sounds like). this is all i have to go on. Maybe if i can access birth records for the year(s) 08/08/1888 or 1890 i can locate my family. as he always said he was 12 when mount pelee erupted

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Charles Louis Gabriel, born Martinique or ?

My husband's great grand father, Charles Louis Gabriel, was born in Martinique on 3 July, 1819 in Saint Pierre, according to information given by him on birth certificates, etc. However, back in 2001 the General Council of Martinique did a search of this date and found nothing - the research was carried out at the civil offices of Saint-Pierre (Mouillage) and Saint-Pierre (Fort). As he had 13 children, practiced as a doctor in Kempsey, NSW (although we do not believe he ever received his full qualifications for this because he had to cut short his studies at Montpellier University due to lack of funds - family hearsay). He was supposed to be apprenticed to a Dr. L'Estrange for 3 years at the hospital at Fort Royal Martinique. We believe his mother's name might have been Laurencive Rosa. His father or grandfather supposedly came from France and may have changed his name to that of his wife. He arrived in Australia on the French ship D'Alliance in 1847, which we understand was previously in the Solomon Islands and perhaps New Zealand. I seem to hit a brick wall in trying to ascertain the name of his parents, so if anyone can help that would be wonderful.

I am seeking information on Dr. Paul Barbe Bremond (1770 - 1874) Dr. Bremond may have been born in Martinique, went to Marseilles, France and then to the United State in about 1805. He may have been a cousin of Empress Josephine and he was a physician. There is a posting on ancestry.com that says that he was married to Marie Claire Tache de la Pagerie in Martinique. He settled in New York City, married Catherine Green of Fishkill, NY in 1812 and raised a family of 8 including Paul Bremond, Clarissa Bremond, John H. Bremond, Caroline Virginia Bremond, Eugene Louis Bremond, Jane Louise Bremond, Bierre D. Bremond, and William Augustus Bremond. He died in New York 4 Mar 1874 and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Manhattan, NYC.

My great-grandmother Josephine's maiden name was Cadigan/Cadignan/Cardigan. Given that the spellings are inconsistent across documents it's worth wondering if there is some connection to your Cadougan ancestors. Please contact me and we can continue to investigate. Dad did pass away on December 7th,2007 here in Canada but we returned his ashes to the Catholic Cemetary in Kingstown in March 08 when we came down for a family reunion in St. Vincent . So, I'm happy to say that I am still here & hopefully will be of assistance as we all strive to learn more about our ancestry .
Regards to everyone ,

Winston M.
GUERIN family of Martinique

I am looking for GUERIN's in Martinique in the late 1700's. Angelique GUERIN was born in 1777 in Martinique and immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1792 at the age of 15. She married Louis Charlemagne COLZY in 1799 in Charleston, South Carolina. Any help on finding info on this info for GUERIN's in Martinique would be great. I have no leads on Angelique's parent as of yet.

Cadougan, in martinique

Hi, I am tring to build my family tree, and one of the names I have is Iviginia cadougan (no clue if that is spelled right)I was told that she was from martinique and was a mid wife and one of her daughters had become one too. I don't know if she ever set foot on Trinidad or not but she is the ancestor og my Grand father Joseph Ross. So if anyone has info about her I would be so greatfully appreciative. Thank you
