I just saw this message and hope you have found some info. Anyone who has family from the West Indies or Caribbean should read the book Sugar and Slaves by Dunn (University of Pennsylvannia prof of Sociology). I did see documentation that Barbuda was a breeding colony and the enslaved Africans were not, I repeat, not, included when the British emancipated enslaved Africans in "their" colonies.

I just happened to pick up the search again, when I came across your posting, albeit a few years later. In any case, a belated thank you for your response. I am the youngest of Edgar's two grandsons by my dad, Arthur, a/k/a "Buster".
Dear Gregory,

My name is Elmo Jeffrey Jr. I am the son of Elmo Jeffrey Sr. & Gloria (James) Jeffrey, grandson of (Paternal) Beauford Jeffrey & Clarice (George) Nedd, (Maternal) William James & Evelyn Harris. I was born & raised in N.Y.C. and now reside in Ft. Lauderdale Fl. I've asked my mother about your grand parent's which she remembers. I am now awaiting a response from my uncle Decosta Jeffrey. I'm sure he can give me more info. I do know that cousin Walton lived in the south Florida area until the time of his death a few years ago. His wife Eleanor still reside here. Your Great uncle Ubert Nedd was married to my Grandmother Clarice. They resided in East Harlem for many years before relocating to the Bronx in 1970. I also found another set of Jeffrey's in England. I can send info. on them if interested. In the mean time, I will seek info. on the family tree.

Will stay in touch.
Elmo

My grandfather, Errold Jeffrey, left Barbuda with his wife, Mary Irene (maiden name Nedd) in the early 1900's. They settled in New York City and had six children - the fifth being my father, Delford (who is still alive and well at age 74).

My grandfather had a sister by the name of Gladys, who married a James Harris. Grandpa Errold also had brothers by the names of Udell, Freddy and Charles - all of whom came up to New York from Barbuda.

My dad talks about his cousins from his Aunt Gladys - Jenny (who married a Nathan Symes), Walton, Roy, Alverd and Sylvia - with whom he grew up in New York. But my dad has a hard time remembering names of people going back the other way on the family tree, back in Barbuda.

Also, I'd like to mention my grandmother's people, the Nedd's. My grandmother, Mary (aka Irene), had two brothers - Alfred Nedd and Ubert Nedd - that also settled in New York.

Can anyone make a connection to my grandfather or my grandmother?

Please keep in touch.

Greg Jeffrey (Long Island, New York, USA)

Hello,

I just came across this posting, and I realize it was put on the web over 5 years ago...but I hope I might still get a response.

I'm a New Yorker of Barbudan heritage. My grandfather (Erold Jeffrey) had a sister named Gladys. She was married to a James Harris, and they had children - my dad's first cousins - named: Jenny, Walton, Roy, Alverd and Sylvia. Jenny, my dad tells me, was married to a Nathan Symes. Is there any connection of these folks to you?

My grandfather also had brothers, who like Gladys, migrated to New York: Udell, Freddy and Charles.

Also, might you know anything about my grandmother's people? My grandmother, Mary Irene née Nedd, had brothers named Alfred and Ubert, both of whom also settled in New York City many years ago.

I eagerly await a response!

Greg Jeffrey

I'm trying to find information on my grandmother's "Aunt Bess" who lived in Barbuda circa 1865-1969? Oral history maintains that she lived to be 104 years and was known as the island story teller? No one can remember her formal name. Her surname may have been Harris or Sefus/Cephas. Any and all leads appreciated.

"breeding experiments"

Without going into the whole argument regarding the much beloved rumour that "the Codringtons" pursued any intentional form of slave breeding or at any time "bred" slaves for size etc, A few short facts: there is no known documentation supporting the idea. Most Carib scholars agree that breeding was not viewed as viable or economically feasible at the time. The traditional fine physique and generally tall build of those of true Barbudan origin(from family lines dating back to slavery on the island) is thought honestly to be a result of the Codrington's policy for many years of choosing what were called "Coromantes" (Generally of the Akan lingual group)of strong and imposing stature and proud, uncompromising character. Not all planters followed such a policy. In addition, slaves and workers on Barbuda benefited from different living and eating arrangements basically they ate better, worked under far better conditions, and consequently were more likely to retain tribal and ethnic characteristics over time. I am by no means suggesting Barbuda was party time, but it was like day to Antigua's night in terms of work and food and treatment.

The memory of "breeding experiments" seems to derive from a a Mr. Martin, who leased a portion of Barbuda in the 1770's and was known to have discussed the subject on more than one occasion. There is little evidence and he did not control more than a small portion of the island at the time. He is known to have purchased more women than men when buying slaves, which no doubt supports his interest in encouraging reproduction, but the notion of "breeding" in a serious way just doesn't seem to appear in the old records or correspondence etc. Truth is it was too expensive to support alot of females and children who could not work.(Planter's way of thinking you see)The bottom line was productivity and profit. Scholars just don't think breeding was ever financially viable.
