Hello,
I have not visited the site for some time. So I apologize for my rather late answer. I did know that John Hiatt Pink had married Lucy Howes, but not that she was the daughter of a Towcester solicitor.
Emma Susannah is the given name of John Hiatt Pink's sister. So I assumed that she was godmother to the child.
John Hiatt Pink, Emma Susannah Pink, William Hyde Pink, Caroline Hall Pink, George Pink, Emily Laws Pink, Eliza Ann Pink and Martha Pink were all natural children of John Pink and Rebecca Hiatt. John Pink refers to Rebecca Hiatt in his will as "my respected friend and housekeeper...mother of (my) children". Rebecca Hiatt was the mulatta daughter of John Hiatt, custom rotulorum of Saint Ann, Jamaica. John Hiatt died in September 1820 at 98 years old. At that time, mulatta women just did not marry english men, but 7 children suggest that this was a very serious relationship.
I do not know the link between John Brown and Eliza Ann Pink. But I do have the census records.
I did not know that John Pink's plantations were over 2000 acres. However I did know that he had sugar (Drax Hall) and coffee (Sunbury) plantations. Emma Susannah Pink and William Hyde Pink, the daughter and son of John Pink and sister and brother of John Hiatt Pink were compensated each for 470 slaves in 1837, indicating that their father had in the range of 1000 slaves. I have begun to transcribe the slave register for John Hiatt, John Pink and Rebecca Hiatt, but have not yet finished.
I will try to stay better posted now!!

Clearly you know who the "Harpers of Dudley" are, but readers of the forum do not. Detail the people, the places, the dates, the sources, the search, that led you to this query.

Thanks.

I am researching my Great Great Great Grandmother her name was Ann born about 1787 and was a slave on Hopewell Pen st Ann. she was owned by Henry Ashmeade in 1817 who had estates in st Ann Parish. His plantations are listed in the almanac but Hopewell Pen is not mentioned. Any help about Hopewell Pen, is it one of the plantations of Henry Ashmeade. and how I can find more information about Ann. she had a son Edwin Campbell born in slavery in 1816 and I have traced his line to my mother but I have no leads to Ann's maiden name other than Campbell which could be her maiden name or the surname of the father of Edwin Campbell/ where was she born or her mother or father. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Also sorry for a complete lack of info.....
All I know about James Thomas Sewell is that his d.o.b is 23/6/1789 and that he was married.
I wasn't aware that he'd been in Jamaica, though, if he'd seen the success that his younger brother had had out there, one might assume that he could easily have gone out there for a cut of the action; but this is purely an assumption and not backed up by any fact on my behalf. Incidentally, I have an oil painting of his mother, Mary Close, here - she looks as tough as nails!

Now, I've no idea who you are, but I'd be interested to find out more and am better at e-mail that this particular medium. percysewell@dsl.pipex.com

I am trying to find some information on a James Sewell, reputedly from Trelawney, father of Louisa Sewell (born about 1871 and who married and moved to Christiana, Manchester). Presumably this James was born in the 1830's or 40's. Could you confirm whether James Thomas Sewell, born 1789 (Henry's uncle) ever lived in Jamaica, and might have had a family there?
Thanks in advance.

Did you know that John Hiatt Pink married Lucy Howes, the daughter of a Towcester solicitor. John and Lucy had a daughter Emma Susanna Pink born in Wattisfield, Suffolk on Feb 28the 1842 registered on March 30th 1842. We have a record of John Pink, presumably the father , owning more than 2,000 acres in Jamaica presumably sugar plantations but we have not discovered how many slaves he had!
Curiously in the 1861 census Lucy Pink aged 50, born in Wattisfield is recorded visiting the household of John Brown, plumber and glazier , High Street Towcester and said to be unmarried! Had John Hiatt died or was Lucy the separated from hin?
A Lucy Pink’s death is recorded in Petersfield, Hampshire about 1865
Even more curious is the fact that Eliza Ann Pink, John Hiatt Pinks’s sister is recorded in John Brown’s household in Towcester in the 1871 and 1881 censuses after which John Brown disappears from the census records, presumably because he died between 1871 and 1881.In the 1871 census Eliza is recorded as ‘unmarried’, born in St Ann Jamaica and aged 47 with an annuity.. Eliza Ann Pink continued to live with John Brown’s surviving unmarried daughter Mary in 1881 and 1891. In the 1901 Census she was living with her niece Emma Simmonds in Towcester while Mary Ann Brown was living with her married sister Elizabeth Higham , Eliza ANN died on 26th January 1904 aged 81and was buried in Towcester Cemetry, in a site next to that in which Mary Ann Brown was buried in 1908. We have no idea what connection there was between John Brown and Eliza Pink
Emma Susanna Pink lodged for some time in Towcester and married one William Simmonds A music teacher in Towcester.on 24th Oct 1861 in St Pancras London.
Emma and William had two children in Towcester. In 1871 Emma is recorded as a dealer in Fancy Goods
In the 1901 Census she is recorded as Head of the household, a widow and a music teacher
Another unknown in this family is John Brown’s second wife Mary, whom he married about 1840 soon after his first wife Mary Piddington died in childbirth, in 1839. This Mary is also recorded as having been born in Wattisfield Suffolk but her surname and parentage are unknown. She was said to be a Lady as was Lucy Pink in the 1861 Census
Can you tell us anything more about the Pink family and their connections with John Brown of Towcester?
There are two John Pink.

John Pink father wrote his last will and testament on February 7th 1834. In the testament, Drax Hall is clearly mentioned as his property, and bequeathed to his children (John Hiatt Pink, as well as 7 other children, Emma Susannah, Caroline Hall, William Hyde, George, Emily, Martha, Eliza Ann). The mother of the children was Rebecca Hiatt, free, a mulatto, daughter of John Hiatt. John Hiatt Pink was born in March 1806.
John Pink died sometime in 1834, as his will was proved in London on January 16th 1835. I do not know the exact date, as that page is missing from the microfilm. But I am looking for it!
I have not yet finished transcribing the will, but my understanding is that the estate was kept in trust between them. Most of them moved to England close to 1840. if you are further interested, please let me know.

Best regards,

I am also told that there is some connection between her family and the "Whitehorns".
Hi. Drax Hall, Ja was established by Charles Drax, a younger son of the Barbados Drax family which also had land in England. Many of the early english settler/planters in ja were younger members of families established on the islands settled earlier (upstream so to speak) 1655 PennVenables bunch have many such examples. 1665-7 Stokes group settled St Thomas/Morant area all from Leeward Islands.
For owner history of Drax hall I could do a look up from Armstrong's book "The Old Village and The Great House" which has a fairly detailed list
ChrisCod

Interesting, indeed!

I read about the Drax Hall owners in "Jamaica Surveyed: Plantation Maps and Plans of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries" by B. W. Higman (Nov 2001)

There is a Drax Hall section at http://books.google.com/books?id=v_sPBnsQXV8C&lpg=PA99&a...

Good luck with your research. If you run across any ties with Bellevue Plantation (near Drax Hall in St Ann) and the Leevers family from the UK, please let me know!
Can't help with subsequent owners but have interesting links with possible original owners.

I live in Bath which had several, often unsavoury links with Jamaica through the slave trade. But Wm Beckford established grandiose properties in Bath, including the bizarre Beckford's Tower.

Of more interest to me and a colleague researching Bath history is that Drax is the family name of minor Dorset aristocracy of whom Edward Drax is our focus. Drax was a neighbour and probably associate of James Plunkett both of whom had estates (probably sugar plantations) in Jamaica.

Plunkett had an Afro_Caribbean servant named Frederick who was probably one of the first black inhabitants of Bath. We are trying to find out what happened to Frederick when Plunkett died abt. 1790. He's listed as a servant, but might have been indentured and so possibly freed after death of Plunkett, who left hims a small sum of money and gold watch in his will.

Would be interested in your source for Beckford's ownership of Drax Hall as that could imply a three-way relationship between Drax, Plunkett and Beckford.

B Jones
