I am currently working on a monograph on the life of Ena DaCosta (Miss D, born in Preston, St mary) as a tribute to her work at the Highgate Continuation School in St. Mary, Jamaica. She should be regarded as one of the giants of Jamaica's Education History, and she deserves to be remembered for her contribution to education in Jamaica in general and specifically to the lives of the many Conti students. Any information re her family, siblings, etc would be appreciated. I can be reached at allen1f@cmich.edu

I am looking for any information regarding any of the following individuals from Dry Harbour (Discovery Bay) Jamaica:

William Henry Stewart Sr. c.1825 in Scotland? m. Miriam (Mary) Taylor.

One known son - William Henry Stewart Jr. (a.k.a. Henry/ Old Razor) c.1848 - 1932 buried in family plot in Helicon, m. Annie Cornelia Hines c.1854-1922. It is believed that William was a millwright and carpenter. They had at least 6 children. I am looking for the relatives of these children who were born in Cottage, Dry Harbour, Saint Ann:

Ernest Samuel Stewart b. Apr 15 1876, d. Jul 12, 1942 (died in New York, USA)
Alfred Hugh Stewart b. Jun 20 1879 – ? buried at Helicon
Edward Nathaniel Stewart b. June 4, 1881, d. April 3, 1959 (buried at Helicon)
Charles Arnold Stewart b. May 22 1883 - ? buried at Helicon
Maria Maude b. Jul 1 1886 – March 1960, buried at Helicon
Ida Idillia Stewart b. Nov 7 1888 - ?

There were possibly two other daughters Ada and Ella - not yet confirmed.

All but Edward, a carpenter migrated to the US. Edward m. Ardel Fedelia Johnson b. Feb. 16, 1903
Ardel’s parents: Herbert Johnson m. Edith M. Soares

My research leads me to believe that WH Sr. was a son of Rev. Samuel Henry Stewart, father of Rev. Ernest Augustus Montgomery Stewart b. 1829.

Dear Redstew:

I presume that you have already looked at FamilySearch.org. In case you haven't, the Jamaican records are at https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&a...

The search indexes do not seem to have Clementina's christening, but there are some possibilities you might want to follow up. Specifically
https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&...

and

https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&...

8 of her children with Samuel are recorded in the Civil births, plus some others where a father is not listed: you may want to add some additional filters to narrow down these 149:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&...

A quick look at the MANUAL index for St Ann's
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A...
doesn't show a Clementina baptized up to 1871, but you may want to check that, or look in adjoining parishes.

"C's" starting from 1860 in Vol 3 at Page 14 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-13844-27175-18?cc...

continuing at pg 97 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-13844-27785-34?cc...

If you are near a Mormon FHS you can borrow the marriage records on film. Some of them have recently been indexed, but not yet released on the FamilySearch.org site - perhaps within a few more months...
Hello,

I am trying to find information on Clementina Campbell born about 1870. She married Samuel Evans and I have confirmed 13 children for them. Eleven of the 13 were born in Adnagrass, Saint Anns. One in Silver Grove, Hanover and one unknown. I believe that Clementina was from possibly from Brown's Town as she may have had family there.

I am told that there is some connection to the Whitehorne Family, specifically Angie (Angela?) and Rebecca.

Any help to confirm Clementina's DOB, POB parents and or her marriage to Samuel is appreciated.

I did not receive a copy of the death certificate from you so I did not pursue it any further. I do know there were a few Campbell brothers who came to Jamaica from Scotland and settled in several parishes. Clarendon, Hanover and I believe if memory serves me correctly, Westmoreland was another. My Campbell's resided in Hanover.

I also have many Campbells in my family from Clarendon, Jamaica. We have a John Campbell, who had William Campbell in 1860. We also have another John Campbell who had Archibald Isaac.....in the mid 1800's

Would be good to know if you got any further to connecting the dots

Bev

You can contact Registry general of Jamaica and give them the names of the people and they will look it up. You have to give them parish. There is a fee go to their web site, select genealogy. The marriage records are in Jamaican Archieve.

Not connected at all. Just wanted to help.

I use FamilySearch.org a lot and I am even a volunteer indexer for them. Anyone can help by doing indexing. Check it out at https://indexing.familysearch.org/newuser/nuhome.jsf?3.17.6

Here is some more information:
The Jamaica Gleaner Archives will be useful to you as well. You can subscribe to the archives. Gerald Howden was mentioned several times in the papers.

See information about the Death and Funeral of Gerald Howden from the January 25, 1956 paper. Also, see a piece from the Archives:

THE DAILY GLEANER, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1931.
NEW LANDING WAITER.
We understand that Mr. Gerald
Howden, of t h e Stamp Office, will
be appointed to succeed Mr. W. A.
Marshall as a Landing Waiter of
H. M. Customs, the l a t t e r having
retired from the service on his pension.
Mr. Howden Is one of the Senior
Clerks in the Department, and
for a long time, has been an applicant
for service in the t a rid Ing
Walters* Department of the Customs
Service. '
It Is expected that Mr. Campbell,
of the Kingston Customs, will go
to the Stamp Office in succession

Good luck.
