Hi, I am related to the Crooks of European descent(Scottish). I will check with my Mom to see if the names you mentioned are familiar to her however she had a cousin by the name of Chester Crooks who resided somewhere in Hanover. The bloodline Crooks family are of light complexion and have straight hair . They are all related. They are not blood related to the Crooks family that Paul Crooks speaks about in his book. Unfortunately, my grandaunt died earlier this year therefore I will need sometime to get the information from Jamaica. She would have been able to give you the history of the family. Based on your discription you are related to us.

My father is a northover- from what I've gathered. the northovers do come from scotland originally. most eventually settled in suffolk or sussex england. in fact their is county there called northover, and a very old church. according to my research there were 5 northover brothers, (1700-1800's)each left to seek their fortune. one went to new zealand where he had a sheep ranch and married a local indiginious native, the other went to jamaica had a sugar plantation, another went to upstate new york in america, was part of the hudson fur trapping company and married a local Yakima indian. the other went to australia and was working as a prison guard on the ships that took criminals to the penal colonies there. he eventually settled there with again a local indiginious native- aboriginie. the last brother stayed in england. he was eventually hung as a highway robbery man.

I am interested to know if anyone is related to the Crooks from flamstead near kingsvale in hanover. My ggrandfather was james mackay crooks. We are puzzled as to where he and his family lived before they settled in flamstead. It is a mistery. My side of the crooks are all light skinned. My ggrandfather and his children, miss dass, mass nonie also called noel crooks, miss allal, douval crooks and clister crooks were all white with blue eyes and straight hair. They had no african blood in them. People used to call my ggrandfather busha sunny. We have been told that our family originated from scotland. Can anyone help with any research, i dont know where to begin looking because i dont know where in jamaica he was born. Also all the crooks that i have contacted seems to be dark skinned. Are we all related?

Hi -- my wife just told me that you'd posted a message on the discussion board. I have some information about how the Manhertz name came to Jamaica -- it's part of a document written by a Jamaican historian cousin of mine with whom I share Manhertz ancestry (his name is Carey Robinson, and you can find his books on Jamaican history on Amazon.com; I was introduced to him through phone, email and letters by another mutual cousin about 18 months ago). In my family the Manhertz name was adopted, it seems, by my great-great-grandfather Joseph Manhertz, who lived as a child on the coffee estate of John (Johann) Michael Manhertz, who came from Bremen, Germany in the early 19th century -- he had a number of afro-German ("Germaican") descendants, and its possible that you could be descended from one of those lines. Even though Carey (& I) may not be biologically descended from John Manhertz, part of Carey's draft manuscript covers him -- I could email that manuscript to you if you like; about 10-12 pages discuss John Manhertz and a couple of his biological descendents. I've collected a bit more info on Jamaican Manhertzes, and about 8 years ago I met another Manhertz in Jamaica who may be a cousin of yours & who gave me some info on the Manhertz family & Germans in Jamaica. I'll search my files to see what I have. Let me know if you have any more info or make any discoveries. Richard Osborne

Not sure I can help but I have 2 Jamaican Dunbars in my Dunbar DNA Project. One has tested and the other just ordered a test kit. The second has their ancestry back to 1850's. I have a third following the Project who has their earliest known ancestor back to Nathaniel Dunbar b. late 1850's.

The further back I can get my participants ancestry, the more informative it is for the Project. So, while researching this family I came across your info along with another piece of info that puts a name, John Lawrence Dunbar, and a date he was born of 6 Nov 1749 that might help my three participants.

Sincerely, Debra Dunbar Nowell - Project Administrator

My grandmother's name was Joanna Whitley (possibly incorrectly spelt). Her mother was "Aunt Georgie". My grandmother had two children with Dyer (1st name unknown), he left to go to Cuba when father was young possibly in early 1920's. My father was born in Clarendon in 1914. I would be grateful for any further information.

I am searcing for my maternal grandmother Mildred Phillips.
I think she was born in Mandeville or St Elizabeth Jamaica around 1922.

She married my grandfather Frederick Jones and had one child, which is my mother Karlena jones born 1943.

My grandmother then left Jamaica for New York between 1944-1945 leaving my mother behind. My mother was aged between 1-2yrs old.

My grandmother remarried, her name became Mildred Knight. She had 2 more children called Patricia and Arthur born sometime in the 1950's.

My Grandmothers last known address was The Bronx, New York.

If anyone has any information it would really be appreciated.

Hi there,

There is yet another spelling to our last name and it is Finniken. I am also originally from Lucea but I now reside in Canada. It is quite interesting to see how many of us are living outside Jamaica and even though there were not that many Finnikins/kens around when I was growing up, how many of us are around now. The clan has certainly grown.

Hi Ken

Try the Mormons Headquarters in London, they have microfilmed birth, death and marriage records from the Caribbean. I haven't used them myself and I'm not sure what dates their records run to but I have come up against a brick wall at the RGD in Jamaica and have read that the Family History Centre at the Mormons HQ is the next best thing.
Best
Jane

I am very interested in what you have written, My family is from eastern part St Thomas. The house that I knew in the country was in Soho. My great-grandfather was Roland Richard Dorias Manhertz. He was born I believe in 1902. He has two brother Oscar and Franklin. Oscar didnt have any children but Franklin did, my understanding was that he was born 1888. Their father was Charles Manhertz who I have always been told came from Germany. By your post it would seem Charles had a brother. My great-grandmother was Ellen Cordella Boyd Manhertz. So if anyone has info on the Boyd's I would love to know as well.
